I agree that this isn't sudden or anything, but like you mentioned, there used to be more of an effort to "put the viewer off the track." Now it's more common and accepted for characters to be openly gay. Having said that, there's still a strong aversion to having LGBT protagonists in films that aren't exclusively about LGBT issues. Probably due to issues with global marketing.

I wish movies of other genres were starting to show more LGBT support. I've been watching horror movies all month and, even though I don't expect them to be filled with good morals, it's frustrating how often homosexuality is used to add to the "deviancy" of a character. It's annoying that whenever you compare other forms of discrimination, like racism, to homophobia the church conveniently says that's an unfair comparison. In the leaked video "In Which They Fret Over Politics" they claim comparing African Americans to the LGBT community "demeans their struggle" because "they haven't been excluded from graduate schools and asked to drink

(I made an account, so I'm not anonymous anymore) I don't have to, but it's nice once in a while and makes me feel rebellious. It's a bit silly, but anything I do that goes against the church (drinking alcohol or coffee, wearing tank tops, swearing, etc) helps get out any church-related frustration I have.
