If they were tapirs, where does a big strappling warrior put his legs to ride them? They would be dragging on the ground if he rode them like a horse.

These acronyms will kill you. I can type faster writing the words out than holding down the cap key. I hate shit like IIRC, IDK, ad nauseam.

Or is it Breedumyung? (No, he's just a fun poster to read here.) Anyway, I seem to remember that Briggy said that if a person has even one drop of Negro blood, that person is cursed. I am quite fair-skinned. I have to work hard in getting a little color. A friend of mine (actually a relative who discovered that we are 9th cousins once removed) works extensively on genealogy. She has found o

I find that those who are Evangelicals/Fundamentalists the scariest. There is no independent thought -- what their preachers tell them, it's God's law -- ranging from politics to sexuality with no discernment. The Amish, Old Order Mennonites, etc. are isolated communities and do not breathe down your neck. I think the Mormon church is probably not unlike the Evangelical/Fundamentalists. Right beh

My paternal grandmother was an SDA. While it professes mainstream Christianity in most aspects doctrinally, there are lots of eccentricities such as their close affinity to Jewish levitical laws: the Sabbath, no pork, etc. My grandmother never ate meat in her home, but when she visited us she dug at my mother's roast beef like she was starved. SDAs have a tendency to treat everything outside of t

Build a wooden cross and put in a prominent place. After all, they claim to be Christians.

I grew up in the Midwest (where it is cold) in a strong Catholic/Lutheran mid-size city. In my last year of high school (1965/66) I took a public speaking course as an elective. Throughout the year we would occasionally weave into our speeches a little about ourselves. There was one guy in the class who kept on and on about how he was going to be a Mormon missionary and was so looking forward

Next week I am going to Cancun to attend the marriage of my nephew and godson to his partner. My Mom who is quite old-fashioned at age 90 doesn't approve of this, but this week she sent off a card to my nephew and his partner granting them God's blessings. And I am going to get out of the polar vortex which is plaguing a huge part of the US.

Isabel? Isn't that Spanish for Elizabeth? Where did that name come from? Nothing Semitic about that name.

Thought I would continue this interesting thread. http://www.pewforum.org/quiz/u-s-religious-knowledge/ I scored 100%. I thought though that the Jewish Sabbath was a trick question. The Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday and ends on Saturday at sundown. I can see how many would have answered Saturday rather than Friday.

Mr. Packham's post is right on the mark. I was going to say the same thing except he said it so much better. Except for most Fundamentalists and Evangelicals, as well as the LDS church, virtually every mainline denomination has replaced Holy Ghost with Holy Spirit. This happened about 25-30 years ago. Again the two are interchangeable in meaning.

I apologize for perhaps the poor comparison between the two scenarios. Of course, the victims of Jerry Sandusky's had horrific experiences compared to the kid in the Bednar case. I was meaning to draw reference to the posturing. BigM, if indeed the kid in the Bednar video was mentally abused, I think that it is OK to make such "a big deal on this."

...Jerry Sandusky and David Bednar? Jerry Sandusky was nude with his crotch up against a kid's behind in the shower; David Bednar was clothed with his crotch in a kid's behind with a whole roomful of people watching. That scene really freaked me out when I saw what Bednar did.

Obviously there are differences between the two. What are the similarities they share other than the obvious BoM as scripture. Is "keep sweet" a part of the lexicon in both to emphasize the submissiveness of women?

Just heard on the news that a judge in Oklahoma is OK'ing same sex marriage in that state which is even more red than Utah. The US is going to hell (lol). I'm going to Cancun in a few weeks to celebrate my nephew's commitment to his partner. I'm 65 and I would have never thought that any of this would happen in my lifetime. I live in good times.

I was at a friend's apartment one afternoon. I'd often go there to wait out the rush hour before I headed home as he lived near where I worked. I was in his recliner chair reading the newspaper when I felt something on my shoulder. I turned my head to see what it was and it was a mouse. It was the cutest thing I ever saw. Of course, it scared the living daylights out of me. I brushed it off and i

Thanks for the link, nonamekid. Are Mormon meeting houses required to be built on the specifications shown? It's like going to Home Depot and choosing which laminated wood floor you would like to have put down. "I like the Old England Rustic, No. 80674."

Are there readings on each Sunday such as in a liturgical year? Each Sunday in the Catholic and Mainstream Protestantism, there are readings based on a liturgical year. Each reading is based thematically. Is there a Gospel in the BOM?

...in the sense that Catholics and Protestant traditions do? By that I mean, both Catholics and Protestants view the NT in separate categories: the four Gospels, the Epistles (or letters) and then there is Acts of the Apostles and the Revelations. The Old Testament is separated: the Torah, the Prophecies, the Psalms, etc. Does the Book of Mormon have separate categories? I am not BOM

Also, I might add, the church still hasn't dealt with the issue of masturbation and now people of the same sex are getting married.

...that we would be having a conversation on this Board about gay marriage being legalized in Utah last year at Christmas? I would have thought that Utah would be the last bastion against gay marriage. They must be going through boxes and boxes of Depends at the CHQ.

I have a Deaf friend who on Christmas Day late afternoon separates herself from her family and friends and goes to a Senior Citizen home where there are several Deaf seniors. She spends four or five hours with them knowing that they don't have any family. She is exhausted to boot but is re-energized knowing that she is bringing happiness to a lot of lonely people.

I like Rachel Maddow's show but I missed it last night. Again, I'll be curious whether the major networks will cover the story in Utah this weekend. It wasn't mentioned in the first hour of the TODAY show. I can well imagine that the SLC stations went orgasmic last night but then I don't live anywhere near Mormondom. Still, UTAH! I thought that would be the last state to be dealing with

...to look, feel, and taste like mainstream Protestantism, won't there be a (rather significant) cadre of diehard Mormons who will resist these changes therefore leading to a breakaway? Another sect in the making?

Your thread on the Kennedy Assassination has reached its saturation point and so will close if it hasn't already. I was surprised that you referred to Mr. Hoffman as a deaf-mute. Deaf-mute is a 19th and early 20th century construct. Most all Deaf people take offense at the inclusion of the word "mute" as 95% of them are not. The remainder probably don't use their voice but only by ch
