Realize that you are your own person and have no reason to fear him. There is nothing inspired about him, he holds no authority, and no keys to anything. If you WANT to attend his meeting, attend it because YOU *WANT* to attend it. Remember that the worst thing he can possibly do to you is excommunicate you - and if you are posting here, that tells me that you already have one foot out. M

Agreed 1000%. I remember the first time I ever went to a Sacrament meeting and being weirded out by complete strangers introducing themselves to me as "brother" or "sister" - when I was a member, the only people I would address by any sort of title were bishops, presidents, or missionaries. Everyone else either got called by their first name, or "Mr" or "Ms&qu

I've had 8 years of peace, where - apart from enjoying the stories here - I more or less forgot the church even existed. A few weeks ago, that changed when my "home teachers" gave me a call...no biggy, I thought...lots of new blood in the ward, probably just a new hometeacher trying to show everyone how it's done. Then a few nights ago, I get a visit from my friendly neighborhood miss

The stories in this thread make me want to go to Provo, pose as a BYU student, and troll the Standards Office. As I see it, if I keep their spies busy enough, maybe that can give just one BYU student a chance to goof off and not get caught.

My house is sovereign Spartan soil. In Sparta, all people, even a god's messenger, are responsible for the words of their mouth. All are advised to chose their words wisely.

Ridiculous. Your wife might be afraid that if you drink a beer and you don't become a monster like all of the church books claim you will, that might burst her testimony bubble. If you are in Michigan, you have full access to my beer fridge - I'll drive you home if needed.

One more bit of blathering from me: Learn to see through the B.S. - There is a quote that Mormons like to take credit for: "No one said it would be easy, just that it would be worth it." They like to apply this to their narrow, follow-the-prophet way of living and thinking. Sad to tell them, but a General Authority never uttered these words to apply to living the gospel. They come

I’ve been out of the church for quite some time now – not as long as some here, but longer than others. I remember when I first left, I felt lost: this board provided quite a bit of support, but it took me a while to ease back into my old life (convert). While I enjoyed the great stories on the board, I spent a great deal of time as a lurker, soaking up the advice that other ex-Mos were kin

Why in the name of hell would they put "Allowed?" (emphasis on the question mark) if they are trying to clarify the damn thing? All this is going to do is give the Mormons who thought the rule was stupid anyway an excuse to interpret as they see fit, while giving the self-righteous pricks a reason to look down on their fellow church members enjoying a delicious iced tea on a hot summer

I'm in SW Michigan, but I hop back and forth between here and Metro Detroit quite a bit. Should be heading that way in the next month or so!

Look, the harder they make to navigate their web pages the better - better we not do any free feedback for them and give the Church Office Building trolls input on how to improve their sites.

Wasn't really a member all that long (though I was pretty gung-ho when I was). As I posted in another thread, the cracks in the foundation really started in 2005 when I went with my brother and one of our best friends to Toronto for an overnight trip. My brother and friend wanted to go to enjoy Canada's lower drinking age...I just wanted to go and enjoy their company/go someplace different.

Jesus and I were talking about this yesterday. There's nothing that Jesus hates more than getting road blocked by a killer porn site with a "members-only" section.

I played the pope in an elementary school play. I'm sorry, but I feel like I might be a little more qualified. Dear Catholics, vote for Boniface XI as your next Pope (see, already have a name picked out - I'm ready for this). I promise to crack down on any kid diddlers hiding out in the rectories and make fun of Mormons at each Christmas Eve midnight mass! I vow, however, to give forbidde

Mormons have an unrealistically high opinion of how successful their missionary efforts are in South America and Africa. Sure, they may get quick numbers, but those members quickly fall back into inactivity and end up right back in the loving arms of the Holy See. The Catholic Church is going to kick the snot out of them regardless of who the Pope is, but if the church elects an African or So

I joined the church in 2004, during my first year of college. I was extremely active for about a year and a half in total, then went inactive (for a variety of reasons - if any TBMs lurking here want to believe they were for any of the "standard reasons," feel free). The cracks started in the foundation of my beliefs when my brother, one of our best friends, and I went on an over-

I love the idea of anonymous protest during the dark of night, but this one is going to end up being a dud. Now that the church knows that it's going to happen, they will just send someone a little early to take the signs down and throw them away before anyone gets to church. It's going to be like it never happened, and in the minds of most of the members, it never did. When I was in the chu

Hate to sound ignorant, but who is John Dehlin and why have I been seeing his name everywhere on the board lately? Is there a cliff notes version of his story?

I don't miss Mormonism, but I miss the friends I had in the local ward. Genuinely kind people - I'm still on good terms with most of them, but our friendship took a hit. I can promise you that the first year or two is the hardest - once you are able to move past that and drop below their radar, you will be able to start to experiencing the joys of the guilt-free post-Mormon life. We are here

Hey Cheryl - It was actually my thread you are referencing. I work for a public university - while there is a very lax (though possibly not for much longer!) rule on campus about solicitation in the dorms, the rest of the campus is public property. I also blame the church for this level of sneakiness. Looking back on it, I was always impressed with stories like this when I was a TBM: a

Awesome! You responded perfectly! I love reading stories like this on the board - especially when they are written by people who aren't sucked in by their crap anymore. You told it like it was and he chose to ignore your social etiquette lesson. In the end, it will be his loss when he is rude to someone less understanding! Bravo!

Sorry for the ignorance, but why be disrespectful to them? From just briefly reading their blog (his coming out post), it seems that they genuinely have a genuinely loving relationship. It's too bad that he doesn't feel free to explore his true attractions, but he made the choice based on his beliefs. While I don't agree, I guess I'd say good for him. It seems like a messed up arrangement,
