Makurosu, I've been having a horrible day, but this post made me laugh out loud! I hope you don't mind if I start using this - it's just too funny not to!

Does anyone have any fun stories about things you've done that your TBM brethren and sisters might find appallingly blasphemous? The house we rented when I was in college had a pool. At some of our bigger parties, I would get pretty tanked and use the little bit of priesthood I have left to perform Mormon baptisms. The church claims that they are the fastest growing in the world...I'm pretty

He's an old man - he never wanted to be Pope. After John Paul II died, it was his plan to retire to Bavaria and enjoy the time he had left. He probably didn't want the whole world to watch him die like we did with JPII. If I had to chose between having the whole world watch my body start to fall apart, or spending the little time I have left in a cottage up in the alps, you better believe I'm

Catholicism and Mormonism aren't related at all. Say what you will about the dirty laundry of some members of the Catholic clergy, but the Catholic church is open to everyone - when you go to mass, you are experiencing the same level of worship as the most devout member can practice. If your child or friend were to be married in the Catholic church, you would be allowed to attend. Mormonis

I'll probably call the director of campus housing tomorrow. There has been a very lax rule about soliciting in the dorms that is rarely enforced (which is why there are actually 2-3 sets of missionaries assigned to campus) - I'll let them know what's going on and encourage them to think about enforcing the rule (if the missionary had no problem going through my things, what's to say he wouldn't

I know that mission presidents usually eat up the self-righteousness of pecker-heads like the senior prick. The junior companion seemed like he was extremely green and just trying to stay out of trouble (when I got up to go to the restroom was the last time he made eye contact with me - after I came back, he just kept his eyes on the table). I would just be spinning my wheels if I tried reporti

I appreciate the feedback, everyone. I was sort of afraid that I was over-reacting by threatening to call the police on them. I should probably point out that out of all the experiences I've ever had with LDS, Inc Salesmen (and there have been many), this bozo was by far the most unpleasant. It wasn't all that long ago that I was a member of the church (less than 10 years) - about that time,

I wish she would have asked them what their church does to help people, just so she could have heard them say "Pester inactive members..."

Today at lunch time, I was walking across campus to go to one of the dining halls for lunch when I spotted 2 missionaries coming toward me. For years, I used to go out of my way to avoid them, still having some sort of LDS, Inc fear that I'll "get in trouble" if they talk to me, but today I was feeling great. I went out of my way to make eye contact with them - they stopped to talk to

I consider this one of the best videos I've ever watched - totally changed how I think about things (was uncertain about my religious beliefs before I watched it and remained uncertain after - changed nothing in that regard, but made me step back and appreciate science and how insignificant this world really is): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6w2M50_Xdk Also, not really a video/movie, but

I tried fasting a few times when I first converted, but I couldn't last the whole 24 hours. Usually just ended up stuffing myself like normal and just paid the offering. I have to admit, the IDEA of fast offerings has been the one thing that has stuck with me since leaving LDS, Inc. Once every couple weeks, I'll skip a meal and donate the money to an inner city food bank (or just stuff mysel

Anyone here from the Michigan Lansing Mission in the early 2000s? I didn't serve there, but had the pleasure of hanging out with a lot of the missionaries who did!

Ever notice how uncomfortable Mormons get when you start talking about Heavenly Mother in the presence of non-Mormons? Try it out sometime. I saw a missionary start crying during a fast and testimony meeting where he had a LOT of investigators because the local loon started testifying about Heavenly Mother. Afterward, he kept asking everyone in Elder's Quorum how he should go about doing damage

I was out on a drive today and thinking back on my college experience - specifically, how happy I am that I didn't end up sucked into BYU after joining the church my first year of college. I enjoy the relationship that I have with my alma mater - I have fond memories of my time there, am a member of the alumni association, and feel genuinely connected to the university. I feel like the universi

I always kind of figured it was TBMs' way of trying to convince everyone that they are Christian. I've always seemed to notice that whenever someone's Christianity is called into question, they start coming up with more elaborate names for God. "How could you POSSIBLY suggest I'm not a Christian?! I have such love for my personal Lord and Savior, The Son of God, and Messiah: Jesus Chris

There are really so many examples of this in the church. I had a really good friend in high school who was so excited about getting accepted to BYU - her and I would talk for hours about all the things we wanted to accomplish in life. BYU was her ticket to changing the world. Within a semester, it was like the ambition was sucked out of her. She still talked about doing great things, but event

No, but God's underpants I sure thought I was. My friends would make light-hearted jabs or talk about how they thought the church was ridiculous, which I took as persecution for my beliefs. No, it's not persecution - it's just outsiders looking in and calling it like they see it.

I wouldn't bother lecturing them about facts, because I know they would just dismiss it as anti-Mormon smear (and the bishop would probably just turn off the mic). I think instead, I would give them an ethics lesson. I'd tell them that when people say "No" or ask to be left alone, they aren't testing your persistence, they want to be respected. I'd tell them that the vast majority

I've actually been thinking about this thread all day, since I had a similar experience this morning... I am a college rep, so a lot of my job includes driving around my part of the state to give presentations at high schools. I was cruising down the road today on my way to a high school (going pretty quick) when I had to slam on my breaks to avoid rear-ending a truck going 35 in a 55 zone.

Song and dance numbers aren't the way to get hits on YouTube anymore! I want to be in on the meeting in the COB when some PR Muppet comes running in and says "BRETHREN I'VE GOT IT! Let's re-write the lyrics to Call Me Maybe and do a video! MILLIONS OF HITS, BRETHREN!"

Lance just needs to go away. It's admirable that he fessed up, but he is just causing more problems for the Livestrong Foundation - say what you will about what he did while he was an athlete, but the Livestrong Foundation is something that he did that really does make a difference. I know a lot of people who have been fighting/fought/beat cancer, and the foundation's website was an incredible

I usually give a hearty "Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub. Yay, God!" Speaking of "cookie cutter Mormon prayers" has anyone ever noticed that there is even a cookie cutter cadence to Mormon prayers? "Dear Heavenly Father, we...thankyouforthis daaaayy...we ask that....etc, etc, etc" They are always recited in the same sing-song voice...drives me nuts.

It's funny, because I think the church was really hoping that this would go viral like most flash mob videos do. The thing that makes this video suck so hard is that it just seems staged. With good flash mob videos, you can never really tell who is going to join the action next. In this video, it goes from 3 dudes singing and dancing to EVERYONE singing and dancing. That's not a flash mob, th

To be honest, the friendship I shared with the missionaries is one of the things I missed most about being a member of the church. For most of my time in the church, my social circle really was the missionaries who would be assigned to my town. I would drive them to appointments, show them the sites in my area (I live in an area that has a fairly large Amish tourist city. I don't think much of
