Doesn't he know it would undermine the credibility of the church?

I went back and forth with my brother the Institute Director.
He was trying to "bring me back to the fold" so we had an
ongoing exchange of emails. One of the things I mentioned was
Joseph Smith lying about polygamy to the extent that he
publicly savaged the reputations of those whose only "crime"
was to tell the truth.

My mom used to say that God needed someone who wasn't tied to any of the predominant religions so he'd be more open-minded to what God wanted to restore. God needed someone who was more into alternative ways of thinking, with the mysticism and dowsing.
