Cliven Bundy reminds me of my father--white trash chasing money at any cost to others. In the nineties, my father told my brother and me that black people were better off as slaves, because "at least they had some value."

I'd like to see him tell that to the faces of the President, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and others notable in public leadership and civil life.

That puts the old jerk into perspective, Solitary. By the way, I was a fan of BB King, Jimi Hendrix and Claude Brown (Manchild in the Promised Land) when my ignorant daddy said those things.

My dad is in his 70s, and has called the President the "n" word a number of times. It's downright sickening.

There's not wonder that Cliven thinks the way he does. He, being mormon, would have grown up with that mindset. I know plenty of people from my home town in Eastern Utah that sound, act and think just like he does and they're all about his age. Has anyone here seen anything that explores the connection between Cliven and the "overt" racism of the Church (circa 1940-1960)? (Of course I know that the Church has been racist much longer than that but I remember hearing about some awfully racists things come over the pulpit during that time period)

I am sure you are correct about that connection. He would have been in his prime during all of the most racist preaching in response to the civil rights movement.

What family life? As slaves they didn't have a "family life." They were viewed as property with no more right to a family life than one of Cliven's cows has to its calf.

There are, of course, issues of great interest in
Mormonism which span the boundaries between political
and non-political. Romney's campaign was one of those.

This weird Mormon notion of a sacred Constitution and
a wicked Gentile government with no authority over the
Mormons is another of those issues.

Considered only from the viewpoint of one or another
of the Nevada congresscritters' election campaigns,
the matter would immediately transgress RfM rules.

Considered as a social phenomenon that Latter Day Saints
must endure (within or without the so-called Church) it
becomes something greater than partisan politics, and
thus avoids violating RfM rules.

Practically any troll who comes down the virtual pike
could quickly de-rail one of these kinds of threads and
get an important discussion shut down by the moderators.
Luckily that has not yet happened.

For those of us who had to live under White Supremacist,
anti-government religious overlords, the issue is both
a painful and an intriguing one. Just how much can this

It's the sort of thing I've become interested in lately.

I have a site on the web full of thousands of excerpts
from old newspapers, and researching those articles as
a hobby has become my favorite means of obtaining knowledge
of the American past.

I was surprised to discover so many late 1860s anti-government
Copperheads still vocal in the country. I expected to see
KKK reports from the South during the Reconstruction period,
but amazed to discover how much sympathy there was for such
stuff up North and out West as well.

Booth was a sort of hero among these post-war Copperheads.
A few were "galvanized" former Confederates, but the majority
of the northern supporters were from Union states.

If their rhetoric can be believed, they hated the Union
and were red-hot advocates for states' rights -- even for
new attempts at secession. For some reasons I cannot quite
fathom, they hated the 14th Amendment. Into the 1870s many
of these voices were proclaiming that the U.S.A. ceased to
exist shortly after the Civil War. Presidents Grant & Hayes
were their special "demons" -- terrible "tyrants" etc. etc.

I wonder how far back Cliven Bundy's worldview can be traced.
He is obviously a Skousenist, but I'd wager that a good
deal of his thinking goes right back to the post-civil war
American West.

There was a rather infamous newspaper I've been transcribing,
called the "Frontier Index," which moved several times in
a westward direction, before finally being destroyed in
Wyoming. The editors planned to take it to Ogden, but the
re-birth of the paper in the early 1870s was delayed a while.

During its glory days, the "Index" was a flaming Copperhead
paper, run by "Johnny Rebs" who praised Booth and the Dixie
Generals, while continually abusing the U. S. Government,
its armed forces, tax officers, Indian agents, etc. The
editors were blatantly pro-Mormon and seemed to be egging
Brigham and his associates on, in an anticipated rebellion.

I feel like Clive Bundy could have been a regular correspondent
to the "Index," if only his grammar and vernacular could have
been made intelligible for the newspaper's columns.

Surprising to discover that the pro-Mormon, pro-slavery,
armed "patriots" were as active as the Klan 140 years ago.

Why does the Mormon church get a free pass on all of this in the media.
It's because of its racist policies, statements over 130+ years, and it's currently read racist scriptures that have moulded and poisoned the minds of many of its members like Bundy.
The church should share the blame and be publicly exposed and shamed for the racists and bigots they are.
