I am a nevermo that is exploring the depths of church history. I was hoping that you all could provide me with a reading list or suggestions of readings that you think are the 'must-reads' on church history and other documents that helped you transition from TBM to an exmo.

Thanks!

The history of Joseph Smith by his mother Lucy Mack Smith. History straight from the horses mouth, per say.

Thank you for the response. I have heard of this one from other readings- is finding the original copy hard? I have seen the church posted a version that is edited extensively and the original text is quite different.

Someone made a version where you can compare the original with the revised. Be aware that when Mother Smith originally dictated the script she was dictating a Smith family history, not a Joseph Smith history. She was also well advanced in years.

"The Unauthorized Biography of Joseph Smith" by Fawn Brody is a good read.

No man knows my history seems to be one that continually arises in these threads. Will have to start that one next.

Thank you!

I would add "Rough Stone Rolling" by Richard Bushman. He writes from a believer point of view and often dwells too much on the intrincacies of doctrines and revelations, but I consider it essential to understand the strange mind of Joseph Smith. He was a very complex man.
