1) Yes, it was sanctioned by the leaders of the mormon church. No, it was not some graduate student's research project. The highest mormon leaders knew about it.
2) It started in the 1970's. Some people claim it ended in the 70's or 80's, but SL Cabbie knows a woman who was electro-tortured at BYU in the early 90's which means it went on for 15-20 years! You'd think by then the "authorities" would have learned that it didn't change anything. What a bunch of sadists!
3) There's no way for us to know how many people went through this because there's no way that BYU and the mormon leaders would open up their books for us to see. Some people have said that hundreds were subjected to this.
4) People were referred there by bishops, stake presidents and, for BYU students, the standards committee. Teen boys as young as 15 were sent there by their bishops. BYU students were told that they'd either have to go through the "aversion therapy" or leave BYU.
You can do a search and find more info about it. Here's a link. Scroll down to Shocking Events at the Y.http://www.connellodonovan.com/abom.html#shocking
"We love gay people" say the mormon leaders. No they don't.
