Or even just from hearing their voice? Or even hearing someone talk about them?

Yes.

Any source of stress can cause your blood pressure to rise.

Thank you.

I know my question was so stupid & obvious, but my blood pressure has been very bad for the last few weeks. I know it's stress, but I'm just shocked. Usually stress only causes migraines for me.

I had a persistent headache, went to bed with it, woke up with it. By the time I got to the Dr it was so high she wanted to admit me to the hospital. If BP is a problem for you get a GOOD cuff and keep an eye on it. Don't waste money with the wrist kind, go for broke.

I echo what Susan I/S says.

Please be VERY careful with blood pressure--you don't want to go beyond the "migraine" point to something else (like a mini-stroke, etc.).

Seriously: Please be VERY careful.

Please.

My stubborn husband refused to take his meds. I'm fine. I'm fine. And his pressure was not THAT bad. Well he came home sick from a trip, threw up a bunch of times and the act of throwing up spiked his BP and he had a stroke. You can't plan for everything so you have to TAKE YOUR DAMN MEDS!

You might get the book "My Stroke of Insight" written by a brain specialist who had a stroke and remembered all the symptoms and the experience of losing brain function and then getting it back over years of therapy.

It is not a risk you want to take.

I was just freaking out thinking my blood pressure was going up, but it actually hasn't been.

However, my stress levels are very high, & I've been waking up with headaches & migraines more often. I know I need to see a neurologist, & I'm trying to work some things out in order to see one ASAP.

My BP goes up when I have a migraine. Way up..... The rest of the time my meds work just fine.

It also goes up when I am stressed at work. I agree with Susan, get the good cuff, take your meds. I log my numbers so if I see a pattern I can get my butt to the Dr.

Yes, especially if they're religious.

If you have a hereditary factor of high blood pressure in the 40's or for women with pregnancy, it's likely to be a problem with stressful situations of any kind.

We have the factor in our family.

It takes the Big Guns to keep my BP down but it is rarely in the recommended normal range.

Yes. Take meds. The Big Guns. Keep track of your BP if it has gone up in the past. At a minimum, stop by the drug section of most stores and check it. Better yet, buy a cuff style BP device. And use it. Once a week is a good standard if it needs to be monitored.
Sometimes I need to monitor it daily when changing meds.

I agree with all that has been said I myself have suffered from HBP since I was 21 now im 45. I have it in the family from my fathers side "thank you dad" anyway I used to be very flippant about taking my meds and was careless. Once when I went into the ER for feeling like crap my BP was extremely high. There was a nurse and she basically said "honey unless you want to loose your kindeys and go on dialysis you better take better care of yourself" she was the first one who really chewed me out but I listened to her. Sadly my father and grandfather both went on dialysis and died within a year of beginning the process. This got my attention and I have watched it like a hawk ever since. As to your question I truly believe being around some people who are especially annoying can increase your BP and because of that you may want to stay away from them.

Absolutely!!!

I work in the medical field and see it happen all the time.

The lay term is "white coat syndrome" for when someone is nervous in a medical setting and that BP will shoot up!. We take it at the end of the visit, when it drops to a normal range.

Years ago, my son had an accident and was hooked up to a BP machine in the ER. The accident was his Father's fault and every time his Father walked in the room, his BP shot up so high, they would not release him until it stabilized.
I kicked Dad out and sat there talking softly to him. It came back down.

His Father walked back in the room to chat with him...and it shot right back up, including his respirations and pulse!
There was a TV in the room, so I booted Dad out again and put on a show about kittens until his BP stabilized.

You comments reminded me of my son who went in for some surgery for an injury which had to be postponed for a few hours because his BP was too high. They gave him meds and it came down enough to do the surgery. He had never shown signs of HBP before. He was only in his late 20's as I recall.

Physicians know that patients often have higher blood pressure just being a in doctor's office. White Lab Coat syndrome can lead to false positives for high blood pressure.

Your boss, your TBM parents, seeing your favorite movie star, all these things can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, for various reasons.
