Two years and I am so happy living out of Utah. The culture is so accepting and people feel free to be themselves. Living in Utah as an exmormon, I didn't realize how much anxiety living there gave me. Always feeling judged and not good enough.

We went back to visit in the spring and it was like you could almost feel the oppression.

I still miss a lot of things like the red rocks and the smell of desert rain. I miss my family and friends. I miss the outdoor activities we would do. Utah will always hold a piece of me.

But now, I am happy. I am free. I am me.

Some wise man or woman once wrote that, every few months or so, we should all get down on our hands and knees, indoors and out, and crawl around a while. Amazing all the stuff there is down there! And can you believe how funky it gets under the fridge? (At my California ranchero I once discovered a family of scorpions living under the stove.)

Just getting a new point of view does wonders for the soul. I spent too much of my life being afraid to do so. I was in my comfort zone and put up with all kinds of crap because I feared the unknown.

Turns out the unknown is quite often a hell of a lot of fun!

Well, you can visit places like Moab without being overwhelmed by Mormons.

You're the 2nd RfM'r to say this. What is so great about Moab?

Does it have fine shopping, dining, and entertainment?

Or is it the great outdoors that draws your attention there?

I like a place that has all of the above, and services. You know like the very mundane things like going to the doctors, or the post office, or to get the oil changed.

You left Moab two years ago? What area of the country did you move to?

Not Moab, just southern Utah. I moved to the PNW.

One of my children loves the PNW. May in fact return there someday. Loves Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, BC.

Best wishes in your new beginnings!

At a minimum there's a better job market there in the PNW, than southern Utah. In this economy we need to be open to going where the jobs are. Heck, that was in large part why I left Idaho when I did in the late 1980's was a weak job market there.

Now as I inch closer to retirement am looking at returning to the place you left, for its services to the retirement community. Otherwise, southern Utah would have no draw for me either besides its natural wonders.

There's definitely a better job market here.

I lived in Southern Utah for 25 years, it can be a great place to retire if you can get past some of the cultural aspects.

This is one reason why I think exmos should move away when they get the chance. Go become just another person, not an outcast. Go where you can abandon the ex-Mormon label. Become yourself.

Fidget, I'm glad that you are enjoying the PNW. In another lifetime, I will live there. And who knows, maybe in this one as well. :)

Leaving Provo for Buffalo on a Greyhound bus was a huge relief for me, even though homelessness is what faced me on the other end.

How did you cope with homelessness?

And why Buffalo of all places you could've gone to?

Lots of people come here to live. Some leave for what they believe are greener pastures, only to return because they miss it.

It has the four seasons is one reason. Beautiful outdoors scenic wonderland in all directions.

If I wasn't from the Northwest I probably wouldn't mind spending my retirement here. These days I miss my family more and the places of my childhood.

I celebrate with you fidgit. Life is quite amazing when you let it be and refuse to remain stuck in old, debilitating ways of thinking, doing, living.

That being said, I want you to know that you will be missed but I do understand that even great warriors need a break from the battle of bringing sanity to the neighborhood.

I like to think that humanity is winning and there are many who questioning and thinking and getting rid of their shackles even here in Southern Utah.

The foundations of Mormonism are crumbling and it is with delight that I watch some of the best and brightest continue to gain new understandings and compassion and become part of real humanity.
