The subject of bilberry and pilot eyesight is interesting, especially because there's no medical evidence that bilberry affects eyesight at all:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilberry#Myths_and_researchThe best explanation for the myth about bilberry and British pilots that I've heard is that it was deliberate disinformation by the British government during WW2. This was to help hide the fact that the Allies had broken the German codes and were therefore far more effective at finding and defeating the enemy than they should have been. How could this be possible? "Our pilots have super-vision because they use bilberry!"
The real problem of believable disinformation is that it takes on a life of its own. A rumor that once helped the Allies -- and no doubt had Churchill and his buds snickering down in the cabinet war rooms -- is now firmly entrenched in the dietary supplement culture.
