This is the first year I can remember where no new temples were announced. This is quite a shock to most TBMs who have grown accustomed to growth. Hmm.

The new mall is their temple. The god they worship and all that.

Thats sowhy true andtoo interesting! How many were built last year? Compare by saying #a if temples built last year replaced by one big mall this year. Gag

For them suddenly to have NO new ones to announce at this GC is a BIG DEAL. The mall must have taken a huge toll on the Morg Corporation’s treasury.

But if the church is growing as wonderfully as the leaders always claim, why should they be so cash short? Where are all the tithes going?

There is trouble in Paradise.

But wait! I thought the money used to build the mall came from the non-tything, for profit arm of the church -- separate and distinct from the tything pool. If so, wouldn't the tything pool be the same as it always is, flush with cash, just waiting for a chance to build a shiny new temple for the faithful members?

They're probably just trying to psyche the members into doing a better cleaning job. That's their way of telling members the church is poor.

It is interesting that Burton, the bishop in charge of the mall and such, got released yesterday. Just a week after the mall finally got done.

Was it punishment for the debacle?

The following are a few of the temples announced in April:

Aba, Nigeria 4/2/2000
Albuquerque 4/4/97
Atlanta 4/2/80
Meridian, ID 4/2/11
Gila Valley, AZ 4/26/08
Gilbert, AZ 4/26/08
Winnipeg 4/12/11
Portland, 4/7/84
Ft. Collins 4/2/11

There are many others.

Some are not even announced during GC:
Payson, UT 1/25/10
Phoenix 5/24/08
Vancouver 5/25/06
Rexburg 12/12/03
Plus others.

There is no set pattern to when new temples are announced.

Yea, but they just announced 4 or 5 temples in October so I am not surprised there were none to announce in April. They will continue to build temples no matter what. It keeps members active.

I have to wonder when they'll hit the saturation point. Sure, they'll have a temple in all the major world cities for sheer visibility. Rome and Paris make sense for that reason alone. But at what point does the stagnation in membership put a crimp on the church's building spree?

I missioned there.

I bet the locals are happier having the new NHL Jets than a mormon temple. But, after reading this article, it looks like the jury is still out about if/when/where.

http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/winnipeg/

And Hinckley's statement to Manitoba's mormons: "You look so good to me. You people pray. You pay your tithing. You're good citizens. Thank you for being what you are ... I just wanted to repeat, we love you ... Every man, woman, boy and girl in this Church is important. The Lord will bless you as you serve Him in righteousness."

It IS all about pay, pray, and obey.

I get the impression that the church's growth has started to grind to a halt. They are becomming more and more unpopular with just about everybody. I am sure they don't have enough people joining or forming large enough communities to warrent that many more temples. It will be telling if there aren't any announced in october.

They are simply doing what any good business would do--diversifying by adding a new revenue stream when the old ones are drying up.

Yay! Let them eat the rich...

Said that the # of stakes is continuing to grow strong, while attendance within those stakes is low.

They're baking a bunch of hollow twinkies.

Growth is not defined by building a building that does not get used to it's capacity. That is only a belief that growth will occur. They are waging their bets and building these buildings.

I hope history/time proves them wrong.

the Fort Collins temple has been in the news a bit because the neighbors don't want it. I would care a little bit more except I'll be moving soon and I already know the church has enough money to do what they want to do anyway or no matter how many people complain. It WILL happen. regardless.

So, hang on...

Of the Temples announced in the last couple of years, how many have actually started?

Oct 2009
Sapporo Japan - Ground broken Oct 2011
Fortaleza Brazil - Ground broken Nov 2011
Concepción Chile - No groundbreaking date as yet
Jan 2010
Payson Utah - Ground broken Oct 2011
October 2010
Lisbon, Portugal - No groundbreaking date as yet
Indianapolis, Indiana - No groundbreaking date as yet
Urdaneta, Philippines - No site location as yet
Hartford, Connecticut - No groundbreaking date as yet
Tijuana, Mexico - No groundbeaking date as yet
Apr 2011
Fort Collins - No ground breaking date as yet
Meridian Idaho - no groundbreaking date as yet
Winnipeg - no site location as yet.
October 2011
Provo City Center - Old one being dismantled, no groundbreaking date announced as yet.
Barranquilla Colombia - No site location as yet
Durban South Africa - No site location as yet
Kinshasa, Congo - No site location as yet
Start Velley, Wyoming - No site location as yet
Paris, France - No groundbreaking date as yet

The process seems to be very slow, although the ground has been broken and technically construction started, it is actually site clearance going on still. Looking back, things seemed to moved faster in the 1990s - a few had hold ups of up to two years. All of these recent ones are going slow compared to earlier temples a decade or so ago

Tiajuana, Mexico? Seriously? Why??? And who are they going to get to staff a temple in such a dangerous place?
