I remember the Bubbleator! I thought it was so amazing when I was a kid. Fond memories of birthdays at Farrell's, too. Growing up on the eastside, we also had birthdays at Kiddieland next to Bellevue Square. I miss the sound of real hydroplane engines in the summer. Still live in Seattle, in Ballard, and wow has it changed.

We just finished watching the Real Salt Lake vs Sporting KC MLS playoff game in Sandy, Ut, and noticed a banner with a picture of Joseph Smith on a red beer cup entitled Joseph Smith Memorial Cup. Loved it! Anyone seen this before? I don’t live in Utah. How Mormon is Sandy?

I'm a new coffee drinker, too, and have discovered that it is easy to order a basic coffee in Starbucks. Just ask for a tall drip with room. They usually have either a dark or medium roast, so tell them your preference. 'Room' means there will be space for half and half and sugar, which you can find on the table with the sugar, etc. tall means the smallest size.

Sucking every ounce of joy out of life while thinking they are better than everyone else. My mental image of my Mormon relatives is of a dry, shriveled up, mirthless shell of a human being, yet thinking they were somehow superior to the rest of the world.

Gin and tonics as the mercury is in the 90's here in the PNW. Yeah, we're weather weenies but this is HOT for these parts!

Just finished The Boys in the Boat, an excellent read, and fun to read right before the Olympics. PBS just came out with an American Experience episode, The Boys of 36, inspired by the book. Also very good.

I've been reading Aaron Elkin's Gideon Oliver books for years. They're great. He's actually a US author who lives in Port Angeles, WA. As a former scientist, I love his portrayal of scientists and their dialogue. Enjoy!

My parents were both born in the 1920's and grew up in Ogden and Kaysville. About the time they had us kids, they fortunately moved to the Seattle area, where we were all raised. While they were never overtly racist, all of us kids knew they were. They never made outright derogatory statements, but it was more like passing comments that revealed their underlying racism. I think they actually

The Royal Tyrrell is excellent. I was there years ago and was able to go on a day-long fossil dig that was great. It was age-limited though, so if they still do it, small children cannot participate. But the museum itself is excellent.

A year or so ago I was following a missionary blog in the Seattle area where the mission president required that the missionaries sing in the shower, presumably to distract them from unworthy thoughts. It was about six months ago that that missionary's blog disappeared, and I know that he was expressing a lot of doubts, so no surprise. I think this might be what the OP is referring to, but I don'

This, exactly. Spot on. This was my parents, who grew up in Utah. You aren't active, but if someone were to ask you what your religion is, you say Mormon. It's the only religion you know, but you don't really participate and just know the basic idea of warm and fuzzy family. You occasionally go to church on Easter, sometimes the HT's or VT's drop by, but you don't really want to get too involved

I love this place. Thank you for creating it and providing so much help and comfort to so many people on a daily basis. I have learned so much here about the religion of my ancestors, but fortunately not MY religion or my family's religion any more! Keep on keepin' on.

One thing I wish I had done and it's too late now: dance with my father when he asked me. I was too darn shy. Wish I'd done it. Otherwise, there are lots of paths life could have taken and I can't try and second guess. My life has been great and I'm hopeful it will continue that way. Just wish I'd danced with my dad at that dinner in Spain.

If my whole extended family had never encountered the church then I might actually be in touch with some of my multitudinous cousins. But we are the black sheep of the family since my parents left Utah and rejected the church. And those cousins are all soooo boring to be around, and I blame the church.

As RPackham says, there are so many states nearby with great outdoor activities and far fewer Mormons. Religion will always be an issue in Utah for a non-Mormon as compared to any other state. As for St George, it is beautiful but it is still very full of Mormons and they have a lot of influence. My brother lives just outside St George so we have visited frequently. A few days is always fine,

After a day of rain after two months of no rain, which is unheard of here in the PNW, my sweetie made me a nice hot buttered rum to enjoy as the rain poured down.

And does the rock only work with that particular hat? Or would any hat do? Or do you even need a hat? Seems there are still a lot of unanswered questions!

We just heard about it this year but felt we had to support it whole-heartedly. So we just finished a lamb and asparagus savory pie and are tucking into a French Toast pie accompanied by Southern Tier's Creme Brûlée Stout. We told the women in the pie shop here in Seattle what we were celebrating and she had never heard of it before, of course, but said she was going to post it on Facebook.

I also thank my parents (not any god). My father took a job in Seattle that took them out of Ogden in the early 50's. I know that led to them becoming inactive soon after. Us kids were fortunate to be raised away from the pernicious influence of Mormonism. We only occasionally had to go to the LDS church and had limited exposure to our boring and stifling relatives in Utah. It would have been suc

I remember sitting in a small room with a bunch of other kids, so it must have been primary. We were looking at a bunch of boring pictures of bible or JS stories, I suppose. The most memorable part was singing "Popcorn popping on the apricot tree".
