Oh, there's plenty of actual history there, but I got you: Joseph Smith was a master bullshitter, and the Utah church yes-anded on his lies to an absurd degree, then lacquered over everything with a fresh PR veneer. The sites maintained by the Community of Christ have been restored and contain period-authentic set-dressings that are not original to the locations, but they're at least up front

The day after this tour we had a chance to discuss Nauvoo history at length with the Community of Christ's resident historian, which Raptor details in Part 2. I was bothered by the manufactured sentiment at Carthage; the house had been used as a residence after Joju's shootout with the mob, yet here we were touring a iron-bar prison cell which was clearly not there while it was a private homes

Our historian-guide didn't care for our comparing Joju to Saddam Hussein with his predilection to hiding in holes in the ground, and he DEFINITELY would not have enjoyed the detailed conversation about Joseph's masturbatory activities in his underground bunker after we left Nauvoo. But I have to give the dude credit - his version of Joseph Smith wasn't the pious God-king of the Brighamite Morm

The Pageant was the most disappointing aspect of Nauvoo. Since Nauvoo is, as far as I understand, a primarily Mormon tourist destination, I expected the Pageant to feature some of the kookier elements of Mormon history: 18-year-old white kids in brown face and silly mock-native costumes extolling the virtues of Joju's racist novel, castratis in Nikes drinking koolaid and hopping on Elohim's Magic

My wife and I just finished reading a chapter of your book together, Raptor. "Child Brides: That's Just Nitpicking." Funny fucking stuff. We don't have a little ones here this morning, so we're taking full advantage of this luxury. I'll probably play video games and read comics a bit later, then visit with a friend. I love Sundays.

You can download the kindle app for any smartphone, PC or Mac. Honestly, I never use my Kindle anymore, because my phone works nearly as well and is much more portable.

It's always fun when folks are curious about the underbelly of the Mormon beast and give you the opportunity to regale them with tales of the absurdities of Mormonism. By the way, your "squishiness" makes me happy; thank the sacrelicious ceiling waffle you can eat again. You've come along so much in the last couple of years.

Thank you. I'll make a few minor adjustments now that I'm completely sober and not in a PTSD-fueled freak out, but I think I'll send it on. I have very little expectation that he'll read it, but it's important to allow myself to have a voice, AND to give him an opportunity to address my dissent. He can choose to do with it what he will. Even if that means he (or an assistant) throws it in the

If someone PMs me his home address, I'll send it. I choose to believe that Henry Eyring is more ignorant than evil. That may have been why it stung so much, because he has always seemed caring, and this appeared to be incredibly out of character.

I never have done anything of the sort. I wouldn't "spike" a vegetarian's food with animal products. In that strain, I wouldn't secretly feed beef to a practicing Hindu. I wouldn't un-kosher kosher foods in any way. And I would certainly never give alcohol to an unknowing and unwilling Mormon or Muslim or alcoholic or anyone else. We may not agree with another person's p

My mother's less emotionally recovered than she is under permanent influence of high-powered anti-psychotics. But her life is remarkably improved. I wouldn't say she has a great life, but she fills up her time with projects. For instance, she's an amazing Girl Scout leader right now, and I'm happy for her. As abusive as Mormonism is for everyone, both man and woman, I still think men have p

I love this song so much. Thanks, RJ. It's really wonderful to have people like you (sometimes just you) who truly understand me, and care for me despite my flaws. I can't wait for this thing we're collaborating on to breach the birth canal and be presented to the congregation! <Kisses>

Dear Elder Eyring, I listened to your talk at Priesthood session of conference. How dare you? HOW DARE YOU?! You placed the responsibility of the family’s stability on 14-year-olds. Boys, because they have the priesthood. Because they stand in proxy for God, right? RIGHT?! Well, let me tell you: I was an Aaronic priesthood holder once. I thought it was my duty to keep my family intact, ev

Even the all-powerful Apocalypse occasionally succumbs to little schoolgirl crushes. Anyway, I've long had a fondness for strong, charismatic blonde men. Just ask Warren Worthington III.

I just got my Calling and Election made sure, in the lobby of the theatre where I saw The Book of Mormon Musical! The prophet Joseph Smith KISSED ME!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOLt-dpHj5FbQbqNKMIbv7cDvRJ0kX04xlZDu89oZBEBi53MbSooCPPykfAjdQI7w/photo/AF1QipNHkOzU3TO7QWpO6qCCn7uRJwMduXQU-IydYp5Q?key=YU40bFJqRnFSZTBIZzVMTk5vcW51MXMzLXhOMUFR Joseph's lips were

I managed to last 6 weeks leading up to and during my time at the MTC. That streak ended once I had a nocturnal emission; after that I couldn't go more than a few days before the urge for release overcame me. I had companions who were overt about taking care of masturbatory business. They'd tell me about it, brag about how many times they did it in a day, how effusive they were, what have you.

The Miracle of Forgiveness convinced my mother that she was unforgivable. She tried to take her life on four separate occasions. I saw the aftermath of one when she called out to me specifically by name - the blood on the floor and the slash marks on her wrists. She survived, due in all measure the the quick response of EMTs. My bishop and stake president convinced me that Jesus would heal us

You seem to be fairly intolerant toward atheists. Perhaps you would prefer to live in a more theocratic country like Saudi Arabia, where professing and promoting atheism and a religion-free lifestyle are punishable by imprisonment or death. Or maybe you'd do better refraining from making asinine, unhelpful comments.

Semantics games like this are always ridiculous. The church happily accepts "traditional marriage" as a defining trait of the Mormon family. What is that if not an acknowledgment that sexuality defines a person and their relationship to their god? I am bisexual; this tells you, the reader, that I have an attraction to both men and women. I'm married to a woman, and we have two ch

Tonight I'm running away from the dissonance i feel from my Mormon upbringing and my natural sexual proclivities by drinking a metric shit ton of rum. Instead of caving into repression or personal acceptance, I choose to vomit up my guts in the middle of the night. Thank god I have therapy next week.

Saw Deadpool for the 4th time. It was utterly taint-ticklingly delicious; I left behind a moistened seat when I left the theater. I spent the rest of the day flirting with anonymous strangers online and playing Lego by myself.

Last week my wife and I finally sent in our resignation email to the See-Oh-Bee. We didn't expect to hear from them for a few weeks. Imagine my surprise, then, when I opened up my mail today and found a letter from the Great and Spacious Bureaucracy informing us, quite succinctly, that our names had been removed from membership records and placed in the "Motherfucking Intellectuals, Femin

Here's the thing: I normally don't respond to personal experiences like this, because I don't have anything at stake in attempting to disprove them or cause doubts. And I won't comment much here. These are meaningful experiences for you. I will say that I don't find your narrative personally convincing, but my opinion shouldn't matter to you. We don't know each other well enough to truly un

Incidentally, to clarify my remarks that you seem to find so offensive, let me say that I am polite by default. I just don't feel the need to keep silent about assertions that are demonstrably false or which deserve criticism. I was not pointedly attacking any specific belief or ideology, but rather I was making a very general statement. Which, from what I've gathered, virtually everyone but you
