In the 90s and 00s I would always hear: I know Joseph Smith is a prophet of god I know that the Book of Mormon is true I know that the church is true Without fail I would hear at least one of these phrases in any of the ‘real’ testimonies (i.e. not in stories about finding keys or not getting murdered, etc). So it is very interesting if this is no longer a thing. Also, back then

It’s a sad state of affairs when I feel a sense of relief and happiness just to have a different PM. For me she was the lesser of 3 evils, but these people are just embarrassing.

I hate to say it but most of Utah that I visited creeped me out except I didn’t have a word for it at the time. Similar feeling in every temple. It’s the picture-perfect setting that does it for me. So temple square, church office buildings, BYU and anywhere where full TBM “niceness” is on full display. It’s creepy.

I did this. It really helps because AC is non-existent in British homes.

I would recovered more fully and moved on completely long ago if either: (a) Mormons has left me alone with their judgments and interfering in my life or (b) speaking out publicly against the church I didn’t do (b) because I was being kind towards those mentioned in (a). The point is, if you’re in contact with mormons you’re in a no-win situation anyway, so you might as well

All priesthood holders have unrighteousness dominion in their church callings because the mormon church isn’t what it claims to be.

No Yes No Only in the sense that it is a private matter, just as nudity, going to the toilet and having sex are. Once you understand that human beings are the result of billions of years of evolution, that morality is a personal matter, and no one knows what you do in private, there is no need to feel shame or guilt for anything. The key is to decide your own morality based on science and

Mormons seem to love adoption as much as they hate abortion and sex before marriage; another example of black and white thinking. The article makes it seem like they just ran into each other (believable - this is Utah), immediately recognised each other and posed for a selfie (not so likely). I would imagine it would usually tend to be more complicated. But in mormonland everyone is ALWAYS happy

I’m not seeing how OP is being racist. The article is denouncing racism and she is in agreement. What did I miss?

A favourite few that I remember, but it has to be said I don’t know if all of these are still commonly taught/mentioned, nor if I’ve remembered them accurately; a lot of this was taught to me as an investigator and new-member. Thinking about them again has raised some questions too: -Satan controls the ocean, so be careful when you’re swimming in it. Apparently his power extends to swimm

I always assumed that when this was practised in JS and BY days, polyandry fixed this issue. I’m guessing I might be wrong about that because basically everyone is married to several people. But what was the official reason for practicing polyandry if not for this? Or was it covered up? I’ve lost track of what’s been denied vs what has been explained. That would be the solution but I’

I mostly agree. Although I did make it through a five hour interview recently of the British former bishop (Priesthood Dispatches) that was very interesting (to me). Much prefer Dehlin now he’s no longer sitting on middle ground.

“A testimony is made in the bearing of it” so with that level of brainwashing it makes sense the mormon organisation would choose their words carefully. Makes me wonder what a mormon testimony will sound like in years to come. But the problem is theyre trying to appear more mainstream (must mention jesus!) without actually becoming so; they’re painting themselves into a corner.

I take the mind to mean consciousness and self awareness. Our ability to talk about this very concept is the ‘mind’. It is a concept to explain what emerges from the brain: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I don’t know if this makes sense. My brain struggles some days. But my mind knows that so I can point it out to look less stupid.

To me, a testimony literally IS cognitive dissonance. It is the assertion of beliefs held in spite of conflicting evidence. Having a normal, healthy conversation with someone in cognitive dissonance is impossible. It isn’t a little thing, it is everything when you are surrounded by mormons. Your inner strength is remarkable, but you might not see that when who you are is not being reflected bac

I don’t think calling out Afghanistan and Iran is a crusade. Would you like to live there?! Nor is calling out religious extremism being Islamaphobic. Just as discussing religiously-motivated politics does not warrant criticism for the board being political. We are here because we escaped one form of oppression. It should not be surprising that exmormons would discuss other similar issues.

This is bullshit for a few reasons. “Citizenship” in “The Church” is about belonging to an exclusive club. The christlike behaviour (which, as ever, is strange that they feel the need to explain) is generally only extended to those within the club. Mormonism is the epitome of divisiveness, yet hypocritically they will blame the person who is “dissenting”. It is not possible to be o

“It can do better” is rather different to “lost it’s way”. You have some cognitive dissonance going on here.

I’d like a reality tv show where mormons are put into actual normal real life scenarios - without the support of other mormons around them. You know, just like us when we first leave the church… Better yet, incorporate them into this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9TPG80boMjY :-)

I feel this point shouldn’t (for most: doesn’t) need to be made, but for anyone questioning/complaining what the overturning of Roe v Wade has to do with mormonism: https://www.deseret.com/faith/2022/6/24/23181718/roe-v-wade-ends-latter-day-saint-leaders-mormon-protect-life-and-to-preserve-religious-liberty?_amp=true https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-06-26/we-attend-church-
