The Constitution is saying that the GOVERNMENT cannot set up a religious test for candidates. Individuals can make their political choices in any manner they please. They are allowed to freely discriminate based on race, religion, gender, political philosophy, whatever they want. I'm not saying it's right. I'm just pointing out that the constitution is a document that sets up the rules of go

If it turns out there is a magical afterlife to share with our loved ones - then hooray! That will be great. It if turns out that death is the complete and irrevocable end of our body, mind, soul (?), well then there won't be anything left of me to be disappointed. We just need to live each day as if it were our last, because one day it will be.

Perhaps there would be more agreement between the MOs who claim they ARE christian and the evangelicals who claim they are NOT christian if they would both insert the word "mainstream" before the word christian. Are mormons MAINSTREAM christians? I think both parties would have to agree that they are not. The MOs will never agree that they are a cult. Nobody who is in a cult think

His name isn't Klein is it? Sheesh. This kind of "revelation" is just a huge pain in everyone's ass. Just ignore it.

I'm in Northern Virginia. I've lived in the state for 53 years (except for that 18 months that I spent toiling for ChurchCo in S. America and Texas). I was really shocked that the governor would include something like that in the proclamation because I would be willing to bet money that he had never heard of the Mormon welfare program. I'm wondering how they got inside the VA governorship en

I had an interesting chat with my TBM friend yesterday. She told me she was busy with a service project for church - what else is new? She said, "Well you know how the church is known for helping people - but only church members. We're trying to show that we help in the community too." (I didn't know they realized that they had that perception problem - mainly because they DON'T hel

#4 for me. It was one of the most hopelessly desperate times of my life. I didn't try it because it would've hurt my (nevermo) family too much. Also I figured it would be a big hassle to send my body back to the states and I didn't want to be buried alone in S. America.

40. Hmmm...
I don't know anybody involved so it's hard to know what they might mean. But when I read it, I thought it sounded like an apology. Perhaps your MIL wants a good relationship with your wife and feels like she has to clear out some old cobwebs that might be in the way. She understands why your wife left? So maybe MIL has considered leaving herself? It didn't sound like the usual chide to ret

They have found remains that they think could be hers in an area where her husband is known to have gone to look for rocks. No positive identification yet though.

I got that the poster didn't know the person was dead when they sent the friend request. That could happen to anybody. Perhaps I'm over sensitive since I just found out that one of my facebook friends died suddenly. This was someone I'd never met IRL, but we had an interest in common. So I suppose I have a dead person on my friends list too. But it never occurred to me that this could be

The Constitution makes sure that the GOVERNMENT can't make a religious test for public office. In some countries for example, it is law that only Catholics can run for public office. In this country there is no religious stipulation. However, as citizens, we are free to choose who we vote for by any means we like. I personally, don't want a religious nut running the country.

...I think all this PR hiring and trying to change outsider's views of Mormonism is all about politics. Specifically it's about trying to get a Mormon into the White House. This is the closest they've ever been. I was watching Hardball last week. It was hosted by Ron Reagan the day I watched and they were talking about Mitt Romney. The guest said something about Mitt being able to win the

We were very lucky. The power flickered a lot, but surprisingly didn't go out. The wind got really wicked around 1:30 AM and stayed that way for at least an hour. I looked out the window around that time and there were periodic green flashes in the sky. I think that was from transformers blowing out. We have buried power lines in our neighborhood, but they aren't buried all the way to the

I live in the DC suburbs and was VERY aware of the earthquake. I was in the grocery store there was loud rumbling, products off the shelves in every aisle, and the floor actually rippled like water. I would not care to experience that again. I came home to find a lot of things on the floor but no real damage at our house. The news was on EVERY local station all afternoon reporting even the

...but I always thought that we women were supposed to be the uberspiritual ones that would stay faithful to the end and that men were more prone to stray. Therefore, more women would make it to the CK and the few guys who stuck with the program would reap the rewards. I tell my TBM friend that she can go to the CK and listen to MoTab for eternity. If the Mormons are right, then I'll be much

Help out Americans with their spanish? I don't get many requests for this - um, like none. But of course I would try to help them. I frequently get requests to help translate between people who speak English or Spanish but not both and need help. Of course I help them if they need it.

...is that in most cases, you are immersed with only native English speakers. So you are not really immersed the way you are when you arrive in country. I did great at the MTC. That is mainly because I was a language major in college and I had already taken several years of Spanish before the MTC. (I had taken 12 years of French, but God in His wisdom wanted me in S. America.) So the langu

...this SP told the "less actives" that there was a big, cool, fun costume party at the ward and they were invited. And it would be really funny if they showed up dressed like a janitor and brought a lot of cleaning supplies. So they all show up and we know what happened. The reason they all showed up at church on Sunday was to let the air out of the tires of SP's car.

I know they are looking for me but they haven't found me yet. I have no intention of letting them know where I am if this is the kind of result I can expect from resigning. Right now I have no idea what ward I would be in a

You can certainly get those ideas from Mormon culture. I'm sure the breakup of his parents didn't help any. He might leave the church one day, but probably not because it depresses him. I think you are right that it's only in retrospect, after leaving, that you realize how much of their poisonous ideas added to the depression. Good luck to him on his mission. In my case having some histo

Be cautious with the first experiments, especially in regard to driving. Some people are more sensitive to alcohol than others - especially people who don't have a lot of experience. Even though they say a certain number of drinks will give you a certain blood alcohol level, that's not necessarily the end of the story. I'm VERY sensitive to alcohol and I know that if I'm driving I can have exa

Yes, that had to be the ones I'm thinking of. I can't remember whether it was Beverly or Flora, but one did a special musical number singing and it was truly beautiful. Well this solves my curiosity. The person who whispered to me that they were well-connected in SLC wouldn't say which GA was their connection. And since it was through Beverly and I didn't know her maiden name, I was always

That must be the family I'm thinking of. Now that you mention it, I think Flora was only there visiting sometimes. Her mother did have a nice hairdo as I recall. Love the mental image of the Latin-dance simulation of spiking a football. It sounds pretty funny to me - LOL.
