I turned it into a running joke. or "I was raised in a cult" and then just change the subject. but my favorite way is "I was a goddamned mormon missionary, can you stand it? ME?!?!" ETA: it always comes up with Japanese comes up. I can still hold a conversation in rapid fire and that shocks people and the first thing they ask is where did I learn it.

I wonder how they came up with that dollar amount. I've heard lots of stories about people giving "service" by building the damned things. Also, I seem to remember that the members who lived in the temple district usually ponyed up a lot of that dough, didn't they? I remember when they were building the seattle temple, they shook down the existing membership for building funds, t

There used to be a lot of "mystique" about the mormon temples. There was all sorts of stuff that members would whisper amongst themselves. Since you're from Seattle, I'm certain that you are aware of the door on the east side of the temple. It's behind the giant wall sign that says "Holiness to the Lord" and so forth. It's not a formal door, but rather an emergency e

The female missionaries may now wear pants....PANTS while doing mishie work. They still must wear a skirt on Sundays, but during the weekday proselytizing time, they may wear pants. I never thought I'd see that day.

The mormon church is closer to the Pharisees than they'd like to admit.

Don't you find it funny that the mormon church is the definition of irony? In the temple, the mormons are warned about "the philosophies of men....mingled with scripture" I have a distinct memory of sitting in a temple session and thinking "what if THIS (the mormon church and specifically the temple rites) is what he (Satan in the temple film) is warning us about.....the phil

I've been saying this since 2000 when they did the big McTemple building boom. They've done this before in the history of the mormon church. Back in the day, there were 4 temples. St. George, Logan, Manti & SLC. Big temples. Then the Profit (not misspelling it) proclaimed "Let's build smaller temples so we can take them to the people" and they built Hawaii, Alberta &

Calling all conspiracy theorists! (but will ignore dopey political nutjobs) There is NO NEED for additional temples in this world, most CERTAINLY not this size. I hope somebody out there follows the money and uncovers some un-torwards dirty work. SOME PEOPLE are taking some serious kickbacks out of the LDS Inc. They HAVE to be. Even in Utah, is temple-going this big of a thing?

I do/did. My great grandfather had a collection of mormon themed books and he signed them. As I was clearing out after my mom died, if they were signed by the owner (never by the author), like GGGPA or GPA or my mom, I kept them, but if they were just a mormon book, they got tossed. I have his 1888 Book of Mormon that has his signature in it as well as a couple D&C's. I can't imagin

I wonder if they're going to discontinue the Easter Pagent at the Mesa mormon temple. There is a website dedicated to all things MoTemple related and in it it says that the grounds are going to be redesigned to "better accommodate the easter pageant", but I thought that TSCC announced that ALL pageants were going to be discontinued.

Thank you! That is exactly.....EXACTLY the inside information that I was looking for. That looks like a HUGE lot they purchased. Very interesting about the unused portion of the HK temple building, and you hit on my point about making an already underused temple larger. To what end? There will be more seating, but I doubt there will be more patrons especially since Thailand used to be

Well shit. All I wanted to do was point out the unnecessary spending of Widow's Mites, and I got a food fight! I guess that tracks.

https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/hong-kong-china-temple/ Nobody will ever convince me that it's been used enough to even wear out the carpet. Originally, they demolished the mission home, mission office and a chapel to build this and they included the functionality of those buildings into the new structure with the temple on the top floors. Since then, they've purchased property

I'm just going to pipe up and point out that the money that "The Church" brings in IS indeed tax free, but getting it into the hands of those who are really in control is what is being meant by using the term "money laundering". My personal belief is that there is a crew of men, based out of Kirton McConkie and includes the owners of Layton Construction, Okland Constructi

We need to bear in mind that the girls mentioned have a life experience of 15-17 years. If they were unable to say "eff off" it was probably only because of their age and life experience. Yes, they were stupid to send the first pictures to him in the first place, but nevertheless, they shouldn't be extorted like the accusations in the article assert. Blaming the victim is a page

Waaaaaay back in 1992-99ish I really was in it to win it with the mormon church. I was in singles ward, had half a dozen callings, went to each and every fuggin fireside that there was. In addition to which I would do a temple session every Wednesday plus every ward and stake temple night and occasionally on a Saturday. There was a fireside that I went to, was in the 3rd row from the front an

I agree 100%. With the vast majority of subjects, I have the ability to just let things slide off, but when it is something that had such a negative impact on my life - the sexual abuse was a factor to the point of an attempted suicide at age 13 - I get LIT UP fast, especially when a total stranger who did NOT read carefully puts words in my mouth.

First of all, I did NOT say "no-one should ever be tickled by anybody anymore." So out of the box, you've done screwed up by putting words in my mouth. What I said, you fool, was "I am not a fan of tickling". I screwed up because I used foul language in my reply and it got deleted by some admin and didn't put a warning in the subject line. It is there now. I'm go

I can attest that I was tickled constantly when I was a kid due to my laugh - they loved to hear it. When my cousins would do it, I would be sat on and tickled. I laughed. I hated it. When my UNCLE would do it, it always started with a tickle and ended with a sexual assault upon me. So no, I don't appreciate tickles. In fact, don't fucking touch me.

My goodness, were we in the same ward? That is a flawless description of the old blue hymnals as well as the reactions when the new one came out. Former Mormonism really is the same everywhere you go i guess.
