Finding a group to fit in and socialize with is important, glad you found a place where you feel comfortable and accepted.

My house isn't what I'd call immaculate, but it's clean.

Grew up in one of those houses, it definitely runs deeper than just laziness and more intervention than home/visiting teachers occasionally helping to clean. That said, I'm very appreciative of the ward members who did what they could to help us out.

Oh yeah! Silly me for thinking that in ancient Jerusalem they would have oil lamps and torches and stuff to help them see where they're going at night, and that wine stains are pretty distinguishable from being drenched in blood.

I'd just like to point out that millions of people are able to get effective treatment for mental illness and maintain healthy relationships. I don't think we on this board remotely know enough to advise Bear to either stay or go.

So sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. It is important to reach out for help when you need it, and I hope you are able to get any assistance you need. If counseling is not an option, you can speak with your primary care physician, and don't hesitate to use the hotline.

Ours always went through the mission office, presumably because if a missionary transfers to a new address every few months, it's more manageable to have all mail sent to the office and later distributed. Never had any mail opened by the office, then again, I only ever recieved a small handfull of mail in during my two-year sentence.

My guess is that there are probably family/friends involved in most such cases. Personally I haven't been contacted in years.

But it's so masculine! Fits in great with other similar acts of heroism! Pull a drowning family from the car that crashed into the pond Throw yourself on a grenade to save your combat buddies Rescue children from a burning building Go a whole week without jacking off

I think that one is actually a "commandment" that has to be taken with a grain of salt. It goes more for upholding the spirit of the law, not the letter. Does the commandment just apply to felonies, or does it also include misdemeanors? What about parking violations?I mean, if you build a shed in your back yard without a permit, should you be excommunicated for violating zoning regul

Interesting take on the subject. I doubt we'd ever see a study that proves it, though.

With all the market research they do, I'm sure they're well aware. The question is why they don't bring about change in a more timely manner. Is it because they just don't want to lose face? Afraid they'll break the church up if they try to reform too fast? Just old and stubborn? Actually believe their own BS?

I thin it's kind of hard to be a human, man or woman. Relatively speaking, both men and women have it pretty good in modern western culture as far as how the genders treat each other. We're not perfect in that regard, by any means, but miles ahead of where we once were and where other cultures still are.

Religion exists because humans evolved such that we anthropomorphize pretty much anything and everything. Even in todays modern scientifically enlightened age an otherwise rational human being gets mad at his computer because it doesn't work right, and treats the computer (an object he knows is lifeless) as if it had some malevolent design against him. Why? Because that's how the human mind works

Absolutely. Religion of some sort has been constantly present across cultures since before recorded human history. It's not going away any time soon.

No doubt keeping your eye on the developments within Mormondom has its entertainment value. And when combined with wishful thinking, the fact that the current version of Mormonism that exists today is unsustainable going into the future may lead many to conclude that Mormonism is doomed, and it's just a matter of time before they start auctioning off McTemples and closing up shop. This would undo

I enjoy coming by here and spending inordinate amounts of time making mostly less than meaningful comments. After a while I realize that I'm either (a) wasting too much time, (b) making a fool out of myself, or (c) loading up on too many negative feelings, at which point I decide to take a break. I always end upp coming back, for some reason though.

I think a big part of it is the rough and tumble, grit your teeth, endure to the end, pioneer spirit of Mormon culture. That combined with the "spare the rod, spoil the child" mentality.
