Wasn't the word of wisdom not even enforced until the 1920s? I heard Deseret book magazines or something used to host ads for cigars.

Lol. That's really the only place Mormons have left to go. You know what his behavior was and you rationalize it. I've been arguing "absolute morals, my ass. Excusing Joseph from every standard and convention because 'he's a prophet' is moral relativism at its worst."

Where were you when you learned about the changes? I suppose this is a question to those that were still TBM's in 1990. What was your general reaction to the changes? Did you just show up one day and found that the president had changed it? Or were you relieved or sad or did you have no feelings?

You know, once, this information would have been very interesting to my faith. I used to be quite the "intellectual," in my own conceited view. My friends and I channeled the fiery indignant spirit of McKonkie that way.

The revelation that it's the same name for everyone really takes the mysticism out of it by its lonesome factual self. Why do we do these silly rituals? Even having taken "temple prep" (some prep!) I had no idea what I was in for. My faith was that fixed. Some old dude could have taken me into a room and started touching me and I would have chalked it up to God's will. (I hear they act

I suppose I'll just come out with it. Sam. January 27-29 2008. Mesa, Arizona temple. I asked my father who was my escort if it was my premortal name. He said no. I never understood exactly what the heck it was even for. I was just asked to keep it sacred, just because. I thought I could do that, back when the church was something I had faith in.

How do you feel about the new name you received in the temple? I'm torn. On one hand, I feel I should not divulge it, or any of the most secret parts of the temple, as an olive branch to my tbm family and friends. On the other hand, I want to shout it from the house tops just to tempt the fear of it and thus be rid of the power that fear has over me.

I often call myself Penguin on the Internet after my love for the movie Happy Feet. I loved it because of its themes about sex, sexual repression, mental illness, being a social oddball, and finally finding your identity. I recently thought of ColdDodger somehow and I thought it was clever. :)

I haven't heard of this Rexburg. Beard Cards are a thing though. But I've never heard about needing to wear them on a lanyard.

You've just persuaded me to read Moby Dick. I've been going to used books stores and gathering up all the classics that I can. Ever since I got over my faith crisis, something Cristopher hitchens said inspired me. Something in his book about how the great literature of the world fills that, shall we say, "spiritual" need we once looked to scripture to fill. Thanks for your insight.

34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; 35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. 36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of

Is it stupid that I've always hated the word "refreshments"? There are so many parts of our vocabulary I always thought were stupid. I think its because we have so many meetings and we use the very same template on every single one of them. It gets tiresome, redundant, and repetitive. As for insights, I think we could take Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, or even Huck Finn (all bo

I don't think it's just to appropriate blame on you to save their perception of the church. It could also be so they can retain hope that you could come back. That's how tmb's reconcile their love for a family member with the ultimate sin--ceasing to believe. This way it wasn't really your fault. You didn't realise what you were doing.

What I'm reading in a lot of these posts is that historical veritability doesn't really matter because perception is our reality. It reminds me of something Richard Dawkins said about the brain being a complex computer running intricate simulation software. Using stimulus and sense, the brain creates a simulated reality in your head. That's your conscious awareness of the world around you. Th
