very few have invested any thought in these topics. I think its up to us to expose them to it. We'd better get on that too, because eventually old news is old news. I'm afraid that what tscc wants is going to happen: it's going to inoculate the membership against these criticisms, just because you can read it on the official website.

I like when they use a cat scan to show the parts of your brain that light up when you're watching porn to try and prove that it's like drugs and therefore addictive. The part that lights up is the pleasure center and triggers the same dopamine response for anything that feels pleasurable. I'd like to ask one of these belief-pushers if the dopamine response from your pleasure centers from having

You do get kicked out for converting away from the church. Mormon stories just interviewed a group called Free BYU about this.

That's the hard thing with any religion is politely calling it a delusion without making it sound like you're just being condescending.

Check this out. I would encourage everyone to watch this short series. The church's tactics on what they choose to discourage vs when they choose to pat you on the back are part of a theme. "Mind control" might sound stupid and si-fi, but it's a real tactic for controlling group-think. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GmeSmlHyDRU What do you guys think about this in context of the m

Careful. That information can warp a young mind if they get the impression that they are supposed to believe it. Make sure that you teach them that it's ok to question a church when their claims make you feel icky or sad. Or that they at least don't have to believe everything the church says.

I know we're not supposed to evangelize, but I literally found my hope in atheism. I don't think its the theological framework that matters as much as this realization: you are free. Not just free to make decisions that will get you screwed later: you are absolutely free. The quality of your life and your future is in your hands, to be accomplished however you deem it pragmatic to pursue. You are

Imagine a slightly different scenario where Mormonism made you so lonely even in a room full of Mormons that you longed for a second mission just so you could talk with nonmembers again and feel something different than the need to look perfect. That's brain washing whose roots run deep.

I think anything can be justified as long as people think the book is scripture. Throw it all out, solve the problem. Make people rationalize their crazy ass ideas with logic and fact.

The rating systems on movies and games only exist so that Christians know when and where to channel their self-righteousness. I wouldn't worry about it. That's her problem.

I'm hesitant to do that. Im between a rock and a hard place where i need a fluency in it to defend my dignity when poo hits the fan. That's not the only reason though. Even relalizing more and more that it's not the historical workout claims to be, it still speaks to me as a price of literature, mostly because when I immerse myself in it, it's looking back I time at thoughts and logic that I've t

It's different sitting here in a byu class listening to other students talk about bofm names and stories like they were real. I'm interested in a critical reading of the bofm, like the criticism of fiction. Treating alma 30 skeptically, for example, was one of the most fun ways I ever treated the text.

What a mess. Inoculate the next generation? what a bunch of underhanded miserable corporate no-good F@#$#@!! As if you can just inoculate the next generation from this bullshit. The Digital Age will march on and the mormon church will die in time.

Yes it is. No one will listen though. Apparently, until the book of Mormon is explained away to perfection, tbms will keep using it to dismiss all criticism of the man.

That was me. I got it from a right-wing youtube channel for Bill Whittle. It's the perfect word for all the church's activity with the essays. The discussion threads here are busy today.

I hadn't thought about them editing the essays. I don't think the church ever would have bothered with the essays if they weren't hemorrhaging membership over it. The essays can be viewed as an admission of that. God, I just want my family to wake up and get out.

Thank you for your tidbits. Moving forward im gonna have to remind people that one year ago, they would have had me stoned for bringing up these issues in detail. Now, everyone knows we've always been at war with "East Asia." I can't believe the power the church has on the general psyche of the members. I'd never considered it until I stopped my regular doses of indoctrination.

Oh boy. Ya. I think when I finally learned that this information was true after hearing it on my mission, I was literally almost physically sick. I'll never know why God thought it would be better for his church to have a prophet that we couldn't even argue was chaste by all Christian standards. I remember asking my dad, who was in the stake presidency, why, why, why? He couldn't giv

I like Grant Palmer's explanation the reason why Joseph had so many wives and yet no children is because he probably just moved from one to the next that quickly.

Dude, read some of the responses on other threads. Apparently people have been getting the response from TBMs that they'd always known this stuff, some even saying it's no big deal or that it's always been available. i can't believe it. Just like that, one of the biggest gaslights in recent Mormon history worked just like that. I have to assume that's why the essays were anonymous and without

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting Gaslighting or gas-lighting[1] is a form of mental abuse in which false information is presented with the intent of making victims doubt their own memory, perception, and sanity.[2] Instances may range simply from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents ever occurred, up to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention o

It's a relief to hear your feelings. Not a few days have passed since I've been discussing this with friends, and then here comes the church with its "context" for the essays and Fair with they're accusatory "what did you expect?" They're right. what did I expect, except gas-lighting?
