You're fine. You're not overreacting. Of course, your parents are trying to manipulate you. For your own peace of mind, it might be time to begin to disengage from them, if you suspect that's going to be their attitude from now on. Or maybe a strong dose of hard reality would do them some good. You can let them know that you really don't need their presence or support at all, and that you'v

The church can spin this one too. They can claim, "We always expected to have low numbers and limited success." 1 Nephi 14:12 "And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God,

"They are some very nice people and they genuinely care and want the best for you" Well, if "want the best for you" means "want you to be baptized," then sure. Otherwise, no, they don't really care about you. They're only salespeople. They want the best for their company, not you. "So my question is, how do I get the missionaries to leave me alone for good

The best advice I have is to direct your attention to another case very much like yours. She's a few years older than you, and her BF was a prospective convert rather than a member, but her BF was also messed up in the head and a pot smoker. http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1472385 http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1472918 http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1615699 A lot of th

A few things stand out for me in your post. "If a woman and a man who are due to be married share intimacy, are they really committing a sin if they do it for the sake of their eternal love and capacity?" In your church, the church you have consciously chosen, the answer is YES. Yes, your church says that they are committing a sin. According to your church, you are committing the

Yes, it is Mormon doctrine. It's even *in* Mormon Doctrine: Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 109, CAIN: "As a result of his rebellion, Cain was cursed and told that 'the earth' would not thereafter yield him its abundance as previously. In addition he became the first mortal to be cursed as a son of perdition. As a result of his mortal birth he is assured of a tangible body of fl

Thing is, they don't stop with the "lightly veiled" threats. It gets worse. Some of the threats aren't veiled at all. If you don't pay a full tithe – and by that they mean 10% of your GROSS income, before *any* deductions (if that wasn't clear before) – you don't receive or can't renew your temple recommend. Please understand that the missionaries are sales reps. That's their job. Your convert friend is helping them in that role. They will say and do A N Y T H I N G to sell their product and get you baptized. They will make any promise, soothe any fear, tell any falsehood needed. There will be no "working out" tithing with the bishop. They will push you to go to the temple, which is d

If that's all it takes, she could have been out 22 years ago. Rock-in-hat was admitted in the July 1993 Ensign (pp. 61-63) in Russell Nelson's talk "A Treasured Testament." You can still find it on lds.org last I heard.

If you don't care for direct confrontation and prefer to go the passive-aggressive route, and if your umbrella is adjustable, lower it until the others are in the sun and you're the only one in the shade. If it's not adjustable, simply move the umbrella to put them in the sun. Keep moving the umbrella as needed to send your message. But a certain degree of assertiveness is handy out in the non

More BS from the BOM. According to 3 Nephi 1:12-13: "12 And it came to pass that cried mightily unto the Lord all that day; and behold, the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying: 13 Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all

The crows in your neighborhood are quite safe from your BBQ. The case is a non-starter. As you say, the practice is legal, and besides, the church can always claim the 1st Amendment. Any attempt by the federal government (it would have to be the feds of course) to ban the practice would look extremely bad. Congress could never do it. But let's say, just for discussion, that the practice was ba

The OP didn't say anything about tetrads. My comment was purely about the Shemitah years, which (unless I'm mistaken) are marked every seven years, come sheol or high water. I was simply pointing out that starting to count them only in 1930 seems suspiciously like cherry-picking. If 2015 is a Shemitah year, then so was 1945, not 1948. As for 1966-67, there may have been sufficient overlap betw

For the life of me, I will never understand why so many people allow others to wipe their feet on them. It's more than disrespect; your SD is demonstrating open contempt for you, your house and hospitality, and your rules. You cannot let this stand, for your own self-respect if nothing else. Agree with everyone else, it's time for them to go. Give them notice and be prepared to follow through.

"Someone asked who Hitler hated as bad as the Jews. Without missing a single beat from both of 'em, they said 'The Mormons.'" If the above is meant to imply that Hitler hated the Mormons as much as he hated the Jews, then the Auschwitz survivors were very much mistaken. The church did not oppose the Third Reich in any discernible way until the war ended; then, of course, it was "

Yesterday, I learned that the Rowan County clerk job is a family affair. From the L.A. Times of Sept. 2: "When Kim Davis ran her election campaign to replace her mother as Rowan County clerk in Kentucky, she often argued that the public needed a seamless transition because services including marriage licenses 'cannot stop or slow down.' Davis was narrowly elected in 2014 to the top job in

You're an adult. There's no need for you to confess anything to the bishop. He doesn't own you, and neither does the stupid church. You haven't done anything you need to "repent" for. The church makes up its ridiculous rules in order to control every part of your life. It calls normal behavior "sin" and expects everyone to accept its procedures to become "worthy"

Piling on here. I agree with everyone that this will be your life unless drastic changes are made with respect to your fiancé's family. If and when you have your non-temple wedding, expect the in-laws to show up (if they even come; non-Mormon weddings are beneath their standards, you see) bearing gifts of belittling comments and self-righteous, shaming lectures. And adding kids to the mix? Prepa

Well, if I may bring this back on topic… That great prophet, seer and revelator, Orson Pratt, did in fact proclaim that there were people just like us on Mars. (He didn't say if they were Quakers though.) Vindication! A flood of light and understanding! Or not. He also said that people lived on each of the other planets as well. Maybe we just have to look harder. Orson Pratt, 1878, J

Shhhhhh!!! Elohim and Jehovah don't like that kind of talk going around! Ashton died less than two years after that was published. Obviously Mormon God killed him so he couldn't become profit and lead the church astray by spouting his heresies of empathy and compassion. Mormon God had other ideas in mind, like earring restrictions and City Creek.
