I'm out now. But I would have a stayed a believer if: 1. ...if church leadership had been early adopters of the Internet and Facebook with chat rooms, blogs, postings, webinars, podcasts, etc. 2. ...if LDS chapels across the world offered "free wifi" to passersby and bombarded them with the truth with Geico-like tenacity. 3. ...if church leadership had foreseen the development of

Let me clarify my question, madalice. No, I'm not a polygamist. My wife is not a polygamist. I was trying to convey an analogy. My question is whether I should run away from the LDS church and all of its appurtenances (my wife, my kids, my parents, my siblings, my in-laws) all of whom are very active members today. I know that, as an example, that someone in a cult like the Moonies or Je

I'm a 40-yr old married BIC male with two teenage boys. Live in the SLC suburbs. Have an opportunity to leave the state with my employer (large publicly traded company). Now that I'm recently out of the church, should I leave behind my active wife and believing sons? They're anchored to my in-laws also in SLC, would never ever leave. I would counsel a 40-yr old male polygamist who discover

2009 for me. Coming up on 5 delightful, stress-free years. You know, "they" only have as much control of you as you give them. Even a disciplinary court is effective only so much as you voluntarily allow it to be.

I'm hopeful that Ms. Kelly gets the results she seeks. I gather that she doesn't want to be ex'd. I hope the mindless white guys wringing their hands in Virginia realize that Ms. Kelly is just doing what's normal, natural, and consistent with all human beings ... she's asking questions. Too bad they can't keep up with her intellect, her logic, and her activisim. So, I'm voting for what Kate

What should one believe? Well, first of all, do NOT believe in any religion. Religion is for weak people. And do NOT believe in a higher power or Creator or invisible giant in the sky. DO believe that you can discover the meaning and purpose of your life. Believe that you can figure out how you fit in to the wonder that is this planet. There's no clear belief system or career path or mar

The best advice I ever heard on this topic was, "Don't tell anyone anything at anytime." That said, I couldn't hold it in any longer and downloaded with screams and tears to my wife for 5+ hours one night. She was shocked and frightened and confused. I told her I had to tell someone or I'd pop. In the end, she agreed to keep "the secret" to herself and ultimately has cho

Disobedient, my thoughts: 1. Masturbation is normal, healthy, and normal. Yeah, I said "normal" twice. 2. You're not a bad person, you're not a freak because you touch yourself. Nearly everyone does it. Exhale. 3. Your body is yours, do with it what you want. There is no god so there is no shame. Shame is a learned response. Going poo isn't bad. Neither is beating off. 4. T

I've accepted logic and reasoning. I'm an atheist. In fact, I'm an anti-theist. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no god. Religion ... all religion .. is a farce. If you're LDS and it's easy to accept that 99.9% of the world's population is full of it, then once you leave the LDS mind game, you recognize how easily manipulated individuals are. Logic and reason lead directly

So, this may only interest me, but I've been investigating some secular/atheist organizations. Considering joining. Here's some comparative financial data I've gathered. LDS church - Annual revenues from tithing, donations = $7,000,000,000 - Total assets = $35,000,000,000 Freedom from Religion - Annual revenues from donations = $2,700,000 - Total assets = $8,929,000 Council for

I came across this organization (in addition to FFRF.org). Seems like a good one. But they seemed focused on poking people in the eye. 2,200 members. I'm curious if anyone is a member of American Atheists (atheists.org)? Insights? National convention in SLC next year. Ironic. I think I'm seeking to be a part of an organization that tries to enlighten people about the traps of religi

I came across this organization. Seems like a good one. Also seems mostly focused on litigation to stop school prayers, erection of crosses on city/state/federal lands, etc. 20,000 members. I'm curious if anyone is a member of FFRF? Insights? I noticed Mr. Steve Benson was a guest speaker at a convention some years ago. If he sees this post, curious if he's a participant and/or supporter

The fact that a single label is so objectionable proves the very point that mind control has taken over. It proves you're entrenched in a f*cking cult.

I agree with Jacob's comment above. (Sidenote: I think John & Zilpha do a superb job of calling a spade a spade on Mormon Expression. I can't stand listening to John Dehlin's Mormon Stories podcasts because he opens with, "We don't want anyone to be offended. Let's just exchange ideas and then we'll go our separate ways just asking questions, never getting to any answers.")

19. Re: PhD
Steve, congrats on the life-changing endeavor and decision to proceed. Sincerely wish you success. I'd think you should pursue the degree because you want to and have a desire to make a contribution. That's enough. Either pursue it and possible fail or live the rest of your life with a nagging regret of, "I wonder if I should have gotten my PhD." I've considered pursuing a scien

NY Times posed this question to Penn Jillette: Is atheism a religion? Religion cannot and should not be replaced by atheism. Religion needs to go away and not be replaced by anything. Atheism is not a religion. It’s the absence of religion, and that’s a wonderful thing. Religion is not morality. Theists ask me, “If there’s no god, what would stop me from raping and killing everyon

In 1896, the prophet had a revelation and wrote the Manifesto to abolish polygamy to preserve the State of Deseret in the form of the State of Utah and avoid an outside governor. That is, the LDS church modified its misogynistic teachings to preserve its legal position in the union. In 1978, the prophet had a revelation that all black men could receive the priesthood and receive the blessings

Jason Collins came out as gay today. He's an active player in the National Basketball Association. He's the first to announce it. My hat's off to Jason and I wish him continued success, both professionally and personally. I'm sad that he can come out. I can't. I'm not gay. I'm an ex-mormon. My wife, my kids, my mother, my father, my friends, my neighbors. I'd be shamed. I'd be ostra

No doubt Google wants to keep up with the porn viewing rates in Utah County, those view rates among the highest in the world. The high speed fiber will ultimately increase Google's ad revenue and make Happy Valley even happier.

The graphic in the link below shows how fruitless any temple work would be relative to the numbers of individuals on this earth. It also show the logical/numerical flaws in the plan of salvation. http://doublebmcconkie.blogspot.com/2012/03/plan-of-salvation-math-is-flawed.html

I'm curious if the photos in the link below could become part of an advertising campaign (billboard) in Utah? The Freedom From Religion organization seems to advertise with this type of cynicism, but with regards to atheism. Anyone have any experience with the FFR organization? Anyone a dues-paying member? Curious if they'd be worth my time... http://doublebmcconkie.blogspot.com/2012/03/min
