This will be the death knell for Mormonism. It didn't have to be. I honestly believe we could have been the "Jews" of the American West and built a foundation most of us could be proud of identifying with. Greed at the top destroyed it.

“If God had a name what would it be?” Jehovah? Elohim? Adam? I always get confused. “And would you call it to his face?” Only after an appropriate handshake. “If you were faced with Him in all His glory” I spent all those years in boring SM and weird Temple. F-yeah I’m ready! What would you ask if you had just one question? What is the sea of glass spoken of by

I'm a 90s kid. This one-hit wonder is etched in my being. Now.. sorry if I'm about to ruin it.

Serious response. I'd return to SM faster than you could Hie to Kolob if we could spend a year answering all of Joan Osborne's questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDdOnl0bHO4 … If God had a name what would it be? And would you call it to his face? If you were faced with Him in all His glory What would you ask if you had just one question? … And yeah, yeah, God is great Ye

The only hymn that can say really moved me emotionally. I was a huge space nerd growing up. Still am. It was also a hymn that never got any playtime at sacrament meetings. Can't look "weird" in front of the (usually Catholic/mainstream Protestant) investigators. Lame.

"Come Unto Christ". Always found this phrase offputting. But probably because I have a dirty mind :/

Now we're not even supposed to use "LDS" :D When someone asks what my religion is, I respond "I'm an atheist who was raised in the Mormon, LDS faith." Screw TSCC. Mormon and LDS are part of my background. Trying to erase that in order to appease Evangelicals is insulting.

My daughter is old enough to understand that we don't go to church on Sundays but some of her friends do. My NeverMo wife and I both believe she should be educated on my family's heritage. She'll never go to Primary. I was always horrified at the song "Follow the Prophet, Follow the Prophet, Don't Go Astray." Like WTF. Still sends shivers down my spine. But I want her to know w

That's kind of the story behind all the world's major faiths, no? Man claims to speak to god. Man convinces others to believe him without evidence. Man profits on those gullible people.

The existence of this forum, and others like Reddit r/exmormon, to me "testify" to a culturally unique, distinct community. It's worth cherishing (despite the problematic history).

I have cousins who went through the wringer (Northern Arizona.. not even Prescott!) Growing up it was always relative. I felt I missed out on the large family gatherings. They felt they missed out on cultural experiences. Today, all are pretty much atheists like me but for the most part didn't resign to prevent family turmoil.

100% Yes. Faiths survive history via shared cultural experiences, not dogma. Does anyone question religious Jews on wrapping a wire around their homes (Eruv)? Does anyone challenge the direction of Muslim prayer carpet during their 5x prayers? No. But they tolerate/respect it as part of the practices of a small minority of their faithful.

You're describing my mother's church experience. She and my father left the church when they moved east. I got baptized in my teens, partially to rebel against them. And then I left because they were right :/

I've been out for about 7 years (thank you, RFM), but looking back, I was never a TBM. I pop into the forums occasionally, usually after the missionaries manage to track down my last address. I'm generally friendly. Even though I never really believed in gawd, I always found the faith of my parents to be interesting. I didn't grow up in the Moridor. I went to college on the left coast, Mormoni

Recently had this conversation with my Nevermo wife. I think Mormonism could be a sustainable movement if the corporation would relinquish its fanatical control - i.e. if the faith became decentralized. Hear me out.. What if Mormonism was more like Judaism - a "big-tent" faith built primarily on a shared history and tradition but encompassing all convictions spanning secular/athei

My heart aches a bit for those members who remained active to the end. They will undoubtedly be made to feel that they (not the leadership) failed to sustain the branch and grow it into a proper ward. If only we had done a better job of reaching out to inactives! This is on top of the failure they've already been made to feel for not having found their eternity partners while in the YSA. Th

From my "unceremoniously aged out of YSA" single adults branch from years back. Translation: not enough male priesthood holders. "We wrote to you last week that some changes would be coming to the branch on Sunday, and now that sacrament meeting has passed, we wanted to let you know what those changes were. The XXXXXXXXXXX Single Adult Branch has been discontinued. Records

Out since 2015. I check in every year or so. This thread makes me happy. Posting a slightly modified version of the message I was given prior to my mission.. "If you want to reach people, if you want to change hearts, if you want to be successful in your missionary work, testify of the INCORRECTNESS of the Book of Mormon."

Most of my ward emails end up facing the icy fate of outer darkness via my spam filter. Every now and then, one is rescued from spirit prison and shows up in my inbox. Subject line: "Interesting!" Body: Kimball comparing sexual purity to naval manovering. My NeverMo DW is still shocked by the 'Crypt Keeper' voice. https://youtu.be/9_MNkGwy9vo

January rocks. For me NFL playoffs means fun weekends with friends, wings, and (for past few years) beer. This season has been made extra special by the fact that my wife is a hardcore Niners fan. I've always admired Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. I followed the Eagles closely last decade, continued following him after he was dropped for Chip Kelly and through his personal tragedies,

No disconnect, IMHO. Ellen may be out and proud, but she still maintains a level of "decorum" that doesn't offend most of middle America - which in the past several years "accepted" gay people as long as their physical sexuality was kept hidden from public view. Out of sight, out of mind. It's why 'Will & Grace' was a mainstream hit, while 'Queer As Folk' and 'The L
