Wow - interesting press conference. I am guessing several things: 1- Nelson is 'prepping' Oaks to take the reigns and keeping Eyring around to help with all the 'procedural' items. Oaks is next up to bat and he needs training. This has to be somewhat hurtful to Dieter. These dudes come across as 'acting in unison' and under the guidance of Jesus himself but there is a back story to everything as

Does anyone have any figures on the economic impact of ChurchCo to Utah tax payers? My God it has to be horrendous! Each chapel is on at least a few acres and they are everywhere! Many of the older chapels sit on many acres which could easily be sub-divisions of many homes that would be property tax bearing. Whether you like it or not and regardless of your religious affiliation - if you live in

Pres. Monson will return to the dust of the earth from whence he came just like all the rest of us will. His death will likely occur sooner than later now that he is essentially confined to living @ home. He is my only and last connection to the church. I haven't been active for years but I still follow, albeit occasionally, his sermons. Monson is the last of a generation of leaders in the ch

First Prez. always presides. With Monson convalescing the presiding authority would be 'tear in my beer' Eyring or "Hank" as he is called in his biography.

He has been sick for many years. I hope the bell tolls for him so that he can lay his sickly body down. I have a soft spot for Elder Hales. Worked with him when I was in the LA 1st Ward Singles Branch back in the early-90's. He was very healthy back then. He was very kind and understanding (we had a number of homosexuals in the ward that felt ostracized) unlike some of the Q12 that seem to do

Heard a blurb about the meeting on local radio this morning on my way to get coffee. They played back the talk of someone (didn't catch the name) really pressing the women on 'what they believe'. The tone of the speaker sounded somewhat desperate. The reports I have read indicate the men are leaving ChurchCo @ a far greater and more rapid rate than the women and yet it seems that these female LDS

Wowza! There's a boatload of so-called conferences. My suspicion is that these 'meet ups' are being sponsored by web sites like 'LDS Mingle/Single/Whatever' to propagate their business.(??) I don't think ChurchCo is behind this although they likely supply speakers to 'enrich and uplift' and to explain why these poor single folks are very valuable servants in God's Kingdom despite the serious and

I think the reasons for building temples that have been mentioned on the thread are certainly valid - temples bring in revenue and help with retention, indoctrination, image, presence, membership development, etc. But I think we need to look at it from a theological perspective because the theology is really what drives temple building - at least from what I remember being taught. I remember b

Take a look at this article by the Daily Herald in Provo - there can be no doubt this paper is pro-ChurchCo no matter what. This almost reads like a propaganda piece by ChurchCo and something that might fit well in the Church News publication or in the Deseret News. I have to ask myself why a local paper is going to such great length's to legitimize the church? It really feels like a 'look at me

The Granite Mountain Records Vault was built to store, among other things, microfiche which is made of materials that are somewhat unstable. In other words, heat is bad for microfiche and the natural temps inside the mountain are ideal. As I recall, most of the data stored in the vault is genealogical in nature. Over the years I think ChurchCo has been fairly transparent on what the vault is and

No surprises with this article on church demographics. If it weren't for BYU in Provo (Utah County) I wonder if the trend would be similar to Salt Lake County? BYU is another powerful indoctrination tool and I would guess the $200+ million per year in costs to run the university (thanks to tithes from the Canadian saints) pays off in spades. Temples, universities, real estate, banks, etc.

It's not all that surprising that DABC continues to fail audits. It's a state run organization that has been failing audits for years. Hard to imagine not reporting over $200 million in revenue over a six month period but it is what it is. The interesting part of the article is what is quoted below. We are buying more booze than ever in this state and it can't be just the heathens that are lap

I live along the morridor and there are several DI stores close to me. I shop there occasionally to buy used cd's although I have purchased a few clothing items over the years as well. I went to the Centerville UT. DI last week and was rather shocked to see men's dress shirts priced as high as $8. Seems like men's dress shirts used to be in the $3-5 range. Didn't see many $3 shirts on the rack

Right there with you Richard - lots of questions that just simply don't have answers - and never will. I guess we'll just have to settle for the seer stones in the vault in SLC. And speaking of running through the woods with the plates - the plates are estimated to have weighed tens if not hundreds of pounds. And yet Joseph sprinted for home and staved off several would be marauders en route w

Thanks Tom! As others have mentioned, understanding the BofA controversy was a first step out. Many years ago, I saw a showing of IRR's DVD, "Lost BooK of Abraham: Investigating a Remarkable Mormon Claim" at the University of Utah that really got me thinking. BTW - in case folks are interested you can get a free copy from IRR - http://mit.irr.org/category/book-of-abraham. About t

This is what the Gordster said in the April 2003 conference: (pasted) "Each of us has to face the matter—either the Church is true, or it is a fraud. There is no middle ground. It is the Church and kingdom of God, or it is nothing." Link:https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2003/04/loyalty?lang=eng Notice the context - loyalty. It's interesting how he weaves in some sort

Echo Facsimile 3 - John Gee is a bastard of the worst kind. He uses his education at Yale as THE reason why everyone should 'believe' what HE he says. He has confused the science of Egyptology with his miserable writings severely distorting the former. He has sold out himself, Yale, Robert K. Ritner (former mentor who has essentially disavowed himself of his association with Gee) and essentia

As I have said in previous posts - Tom's podcast is one of the most - if not THE most - important podcast on Mormon Stories. I have the full unedited version. The detail and perspective that Tom provides both into his personal life as well as church ordinances and leadership (Holland) is very revealing and really quite stunning. What an odyssey! Thanks again Tom!

Echo Templar on the Tanners - Sandra can be found at the UTLM bookstore and is quite helpful. If you out-of-staters are ever in SLC you should make it a priority to visit UTLM. The credible research Sandra has is vast and covers a wide range of topics. She has much of her research in photocopy so prices are really quite reasonable. And speaking of Richard - if you haven't heard his teachings o

Right there with you Ballaboy. From the dust we have come and shall return likewise. When the heart stops beating we cease to be. It takes time and real effort to internalize this thought. Most all of us on this board have had such a deep brainwashing that it becomes extremely hard to divorce ourselves from the notion of some sort of existence beyond death. I know people that simply refuse

Elder Hales doesn't have much time left. His body will soon be retired to the earth - the final chapter. He will cease to be. We are all destined for the same. He is wearing oxygen therapy eyeglasses so yes, they might not sit perfectly on his nose. His cardiovascular system is so weak that he requires constant therapy. If you look carefully you'll see the feed lines coming down the side of hi

I visited the Lima temple on a trip down there. Lima is a huge city not only in numbers but geographically as well. The temple is one of those crazy ones (Boise and Dallas) where they tried to model it after the tent like tabernacles described in the Bible. These temples have the six free standing spires. Very odd buildings and actually quite small. I heard they added on to the Lima temple but it

These dudes have no idea how to 'save the brand'. For over a century it was grow, grow, grow and now ChurchCo is in severe retraction. I am sure they have a bunch of consultants trying to help them but you can't save something that is so very demonstrably false. JS was a fraud and the damage to the brand is becoming more and more apparent. The fact that ChurchCo is flexing its business arm is a s

Echo NormaRae - this is a post of mine from a thread on this board last week: "In another more recent example, ChurchCo just got Orrin Hatch and Jason Chaffetz to push through legislation that allowed BYU to purchase 81 acres of national forest land on Y mountain in Provo so that BYU could 'control' the trail that leads up to the big concrete Y on the hill. Of course, BYU didn't say it li

Echo Ballaboy234 - too bad we'll all end up loosing it as we age. I would much rather loose my mind surrounded by people who actually know who I am instead of 'on stage' in front of thousands, if not millions, that only see me from afar.
