The similarities between mythologies is a vast and fascinating subject. The authors of the gospels absolutely were familiar with their neighbors' myths, and cast the birth of Jesus as their version of the generalized Myth of the Birth of the Hero (see Otto Rank). Mary serves many roles. She is the Queen of Heaven, like Ishtar, but she is also a mortal bearer of the god's half- mortal child, like

The caste system min India is a race system. It was officially outlawed upon independence (IIRC), but that hardly matters. The upper classes/races make damn sure their children never think of fraternizing with anybody from the lower classes of society. And this system is enforced by recourse to the doctrine of Karma, by which the upper class has decided that everybody in the lower groups is there

On a serious note, the US is now under the control of people who absolutely believe this. That's what home schooling is all about- and Mormons are in the vanguard of home schooling. In Africa it's called Boko Haram. In America it's called school choice. The net result is the same- the notion that the only valid "education" our kids need is to learn to force their religious beliefs on ev

It will soon devolve into "expected" to serve. We all know how the Mormon mind works.

Absolutely. Read it and keep it in a hidden vault lest the SCMC break in and burn it. It contains all those teachings that once formed the basis of Mormonism but now are completely abandoned.

People should not be happy that the church is changing. People should be furious that they just can't catch a break with this lousy institution.

It's not bad once in a while. Many families back in the seventies had it every day. As I said- that ever-lovin' trek back to Missouri that absolutely was going to happen before Jan. 1, 2001.

In one of the temple talks, the speaker will subtly imply that he (or maybe she!) feel so inspired when they follow the gaze of the steeple upward toward heaven.

News flash: you can encounter "God" with no input from "The Church". The main lesson from "The Church" is that you are defective no matter how hard you try.

The reason church schools don't have national fraternities and sororities is because they are ground zero for alcohol abuse.

Correction: American upper middle class. Mormons in Australia just laugh at all the photos of the "typical" Mormons families in the church publications. Straight outta Riverton.

The Mormon connection is that the church failed to do anything to protect the victims even after the church officials were informed. As usual.

If the church fails to open up, it will not lose youth. It will lose people with compassion. One suspects that is the desired goal.

I'm sure it makes all the Catholics and Jews and Orthodox and Buddhists and Navajos just so elated! Then there's the atheists, but American society has made it abundantly clear that we just don't count.

Faithful teenagers could get: 1) Special priesthood levels, with new secret ceremonies 2) Relaxed dating restrictions (could be linked to the above- get the cute girls to wash the boys' feet?) 3) Extra-special opportunities to pay higher tithing rates Just some thoughts.

It makes perfect sense when you understand what God is. God is not a self-existent, objective reality. God is each person's projection of their own individual world view. So obviously God is going to want them to succeed in life. Just like God amazingly agrees with them on everything.
