Because that is what I went to I-MAX and saw on my mission, after coming to the conclusion it was all a farce. I was home a month later!

Its always painful to see Darwinism married to bloody regimes. It's presented as if it disproves evolutionary science. No self-respecting debater should engage in such poor rhetorical nonsense. The appeal to authority is particularly laughable as well. "Do you have to read up on leprechology before disbelieving in them?" (Richard Dawkins on the existence of mythical creatures)

I'm fairly certain many people have seen/read/listened to Brian Dunning's Skeptoid material. It is a weekly podcast that critically analyzes pop-culture phenomena. It is extremely good. He even has a BOM and a BOA podcast if you search the archives. In a fairly recent podcast he provides some interesting, and somewhat disappointingly honest, insight into getting people to question their bel

I am in no way trying to be a downer, but my money is on he stays. I don't know him in any manner, but i'd be shocked if he could resist the pressure. As someone who left early from his mission, this is what he's going to get battered with: -Family pressure to stay -The guilt that "all of these people have sacrificed their own money for you". -"You will always regret it

Not exactly the same, but I put 2 copies of the Demon-Haunted World in last year's white elephaunt event. Went very very well because everyone thought a book by Carl Sagan must be about outer-space. Lovely!!

Ah! Of all the TSCC's most sacred institutions! All time favorite plays: -The pregame prayer, asking for the spirit to abide with us. -The bishop's van-cram, full of non-member high school players. -The obligatory "if it is thy will" style priesthood blessing to heal the kid who got a nasty foul. -The swearing elder's quorum president (only on Saturdays). -The broke

I think this is great from a scientific standpoint, but there are anti-evolutionists who profess a belief in adaptation. They consider it 2 entirely different processes. Intellectually bankrupt? Sure!! But when you have faith, intellect is overrated.

i live in Michigan. The Clarkston area to be less vague. I had quite a few youth dances out on Woodward. I also remember the temple dedication we watched there, via television. Always thought that was odd. It was a like a rock concert when that Hosanna shout thing happened. I drive by there on my way to the Zoo and took a friend over to shoot some hoops between classes at OU a few weeks back.

I'm in Michigan and its slowly starting to trickle in here. It tastes horrible and its like EVERY OTHER SNAKE OIL that comes out of Utah (Noni, Xango) and has the same pseudo-pyramid scheme sales pitch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monavie I know everything on Wiki isn't always perfect but it raises some questions.

"and to acquire major skills and protection (financial, etc.) that you'll need for your future (school, career, marriage/family)" This is one of the most telling points of her message to you. I'm 24 and left my mission after 6 months and I still get messages from my mother about the "nessecary" lessons learned from the Mormon experience. Mother is perpetually broke, and pa

If this is an honest and sincere inquiry, rather than clever trolling then you deserve a little more respect than what has been given you so far. You'll find many people here are Athiest/non-religious because of the methods of logic used to leave the LDS church. Once you begin to question the history of the church you begin to question the Book of Mormon, and then naturally the Bible. It beco

My first falling away after high school was purely a social "this stuff blows" type of deconversion. I fell victim to the date-to-reactivate and got active again, put in my mission papers, got the call and then the doubting dominoes started: 1-The temple experience. 2-Some non-member friends bringing up BoM archeology. 3-Getting to the MTC, only to find that this whole thing was

Yeah, given I'm relatively new (only been posting for 2 months, lurking for a year) I didn't know if anyone had seen it. In fact most of the "reviews" that are testimonkeys get some pretty hilarious comments from non-LDS. It think its funny that the Bible reviews dont have the fanatical testimony like the BoM reviews. I'm not christian whatsoever, but the whole "proclaim absur

How many of you other ex-missionaries actually converted someone with the BOM? In the MTC we got "the power of the Book of Mormon" crammed down our throats, but in the mission field it was more of a stumbling block for investigators (especially the investigators with internet access). I noticed that the only people we baptized were part member families, close friends of members, o

Carl Sagan is the closest thing i've ever had to a genuine hero. His time with us was too short. I love the respect i've seen for him on the boards.

I'm reasonably new to the board and I can identify with the latter part of your post. If you look back on the archived topics you find a greater genuine interest in the condition of others. It seemed like people were "friends" rather than forum posters. Its often unnerving to see people taking a harsh tone with other people on the board. I've not been the victim of it myself but i

You gals/guys are an incredibly smart bunch, and I'm sure this is old and trite on the boards by now but I'm doing a research paper on why the LDS "church" hasn't lost its tax exempt 501 (c)(3) rights over its prop 8 activism. Any reliable links and/or insights into this would be insanely helpful. Thanks a ton.

Attached spirits? We've heard this exact thing from another lucrative cult. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thetans Interesting. Maybe L Ron's estate owes this lady some royalties.

Maybe this was after the "I'd be surprised if they found evidence" nonsense. BYU knows that this would simply be a worthless pit because the evidence wouldn't help the faith of the members. As BKKKP said, just because its true doesn't mean its useful.

To be warned, a few swears. I have 2 stories relating to this, one more personal and the other inspiring and a little sad all at once. A few months into my mission I had entirely lost my faith, but decided that I should trudge along for the family's sake. So as you can deduce, I was miserable. My sister, an atheist, sent me a cell phone so I could call home on mothers day (we were allo

Here were a few that weren't mega-appreciated: "Isn't consecration just communism?" "The Gospel never really disappeared if John and the 3 Nephites were still on the earth, right?" "Is Adam-God doctrine just a theory?" "If exaltation is omniscience, wouldnt existance get horribly boring after a few years?" "If "ev

Since being "relieved" of my LDS morality I wanted to see if my temple clothes could sell online. Interestingly enough Ebay doesn't have any for sale and I KNOW that people would sell them if they could. How did the MORG get them to ban selling these things online? Just interested if anyone had any more info on this. Thanks
