>why not change some of the details of the relatives That's easy. It's a spectacular lack of integrity. If what the Mormons do lacks integrity, that's on them. If what you do lacks integrity, that's on you.

What do you mean members aren't allowed to have them? I don't recall anyone anywhere in Mormondom being excommunicated for having tattoos. Yeah, it's frowned upon, but not allowed?

I don’t see the problem, though I’m not sure why they would green screen in the chair. People in wheelchairs can sit in regular chairs, they just may need help to transfer. People on the news or in zoom meetings routinely insert fake backgrounds. Reporters have been known to wear a jacket and tie/blouse and jeans. FDR managed to hide the fact that he was paralyzed from the waist down after po

Yeah, but that is a separate issue. You can “undo” your own ordinances, at least as long as you are alive. As far as the legal system is concerned, your church membership and marriage automatically end when you die, regardless of what the church claims.

Rusty will do his damndest to hang on until he hits 100 and be the only PSR to do so. And if he just hangs on a few more weeks, he can get credit for having announced over 50% of LDS temples. So I think he is good through October. Oaks seems to be in good health for his age. The other two should not buy green bananas.

The legal system considers a contract to be an agreement between two or more people or organizations. Dead people cannot agree to anything, and therefore cannot be a party to a contract. Marriage is a contract, and is often referred to that way. Baptism is also a contract, though it is generally not referred to that way. So, as far as the law is concerned, no valid contract exists, so there is

So out of about 4,000 stakes/districts, there was a net increase of 16. That's an increase of one third of one percent. Number of children of record was one half of one percent of total church membership, also a very low figure. Of course they don't actually know about births to parents who no longer have any real connection to the church. That's the downside of padding the total membership fi

I have 2 LDS friends that are/were in stake leadership positions. They both have said I would be surprised at how many cafeteria Mormons there are that are among the supposed stalwarts that show up most Sundays, accept callings, etc. I think the garment emphasis this GC is an attempt to push back on cafeteria Mormonism. For a segment of the Mo population, that will be the final straw and they

I didn't know that. I got my PB from him way back when. Mom always considered herself a privileged Mormon, what with a brother who was an SP, and all. Anyhow, she had somebody contact Eldred G for a PB appointment, and got it for me. And they say women have no power in the church. Pshaw. Never underestimate the power of being a pest. Maybe I should have kept a copy of my PB. May be a collec

I don't think there was any mention of LGBTQ+. I guess that horse is either dead or needs time to recuperate before further beatings. Now the horse getting flogged is garments.

At what point did the church reach a state of diminishing returns? There, fixed that for you. ;)

> Telling people not do something makes them want to > do it more. Oh, I don't know. The number of people who smoke in the US is way down. That seems to have worked out OK. And name a scientific belief from the 1600s that has been soundly contradicted by experimental evidence, yet the scientific community refused to alter their belief? Just one example is sufficient. I'll wait.

>Also where in the hell did the pioneers in Utah get olive oil? Same way they got tea and coffee and sugar. Imported goods is not a 20th century creation. It goes back millennia.

I didn't see any of GC, but Gordon Monson, the local print gadfly for the church over at the SLTrib, wrote a totally glowing review of Uchtdorf's talk, mentioning all the things it wasn't. The implication was that the other talks exhibited the faults Uchtdorf's talk lacked. Excerpt's from Monson's column: He said everyone wants to be happy, but not everyone is happy. He didn’t indicate that

EOD posted the list in another thread, but I think it really needs to stand alone in its own thread, so, stealing his list: Fifteen new temples! Wheeeeee!! Uturoa, French Polynesia Chihuahua, Mexico Florianópolis, Brazil Rosario, Argentina Edinburgh, Scotland Brisbane Australia South Area Victoria, British Columbia Yuma, Arizona Houston Texas South Area Des Moines, Iowa Cincin

What difference does it make where they are made? Do you think olive oil for consecration is made by high priests in south Orem?

Mormons believe in apotropaic underwear. You have no idea how hard it is to work that word into a conversation. This is probably the best chance I will get in a while. ;)

>Ignorance is no excuse 24yrs into the Information Age, especially after the church published it all on the church’s own website for everybody to see. Point 1: wait, you think the "Information Age" started in the year 2000? Don't you remember the entire planet covered in AOL CDs to a depth of several inches in the early 1990s? Or the iconic Apple Super Bowl ad in 1984 that didn

They didn't lie on their reports. They didn't file the SEC reports. They did lie about whether they needed to file SEC reports. And yeah, a financial report that says "we audited ourself and decided we were doing everything just right" is a joke of a financial report. Other countries are not nearly as squeamish as the US about holding churches financially accountable.

There was a warning announcement that various speakers may speak seated, and others may need assistance getting to and from the podium. That’s going to make it hard to sell the narrative that the church is strong and vital.

This sounds like a slight variation on “no shirt, no shoes, no service.” And yeah, seriously click-baity headline. She wasn’t ejected, she was removed, and it wasn’t a flight yet. It was still on the ground. It was a plane. Passenger removed from Delta plane.

I see. Western women are the main problem. Let me write that down. Fighting abortion rights, and fighting contraceptive availability would seem to be mutually contradictory aims, until you reframe it as an effort to control women, instead of an effort to prevent abortion.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard of this map before. It’s been around for ten or fifteen years, as best I can tell. The year on submission dates is very hard to read for some reason. Utah is too thick with pins to really look at. Kind of fun to look at outlying areas where I have lived or know people, to see if anyone has jumped ship.

Where does one get the money to buy a Bentley in Hilldale, UT? (OK, I guess trafficking young girls might work) Where does one buy a Bentley for Hilldale, Utah? I suppose there is a dealer in Las Vegas, though that is not exactly next door, and it is a long drive for an oil change. I could see the FBI getting curious if Bentleys start showing up in a sad little polygamous town out in the middl

The angel Moroni statue, trumpet firmly in place this time, was replaced on top of the east spire of the SL Temple this morning. There goes the rumor (favored by me among others) that the statue would be replaced by a Jesus statue, as part of the Jesusification of Mormonism, and the de-emphasis of the BoM. I guess tradition won out. That plus the fact that no other church has ever stuck a J

The old food storage "2 year supply" thing assumed a family with a home with a basement, in other words, a basic 1940s-50s Utah Mormon family. Cynic that I am, I think a lot of the impetus for the program was for church members to buy up and store a lot of what was produced by the welfare farms, again, mostly in Utah. That way, the farms could be passed off as part of a church progra

When the foundational text of your religion, the BoM, is a lie, you are kind of painted into a corner. You can't very well say "it's all made up, and we are just winging it."

They paid off her whole contract to avoid that. She can sue for defamation, but those suits are notoriously difficult to win. It is at least arguable (and I think slam-dunk) that all the complaints against hiring her were all valid. Truth is always a defense against defamation.
