I think the thing that sucked the life out of church was correlation and a stratification into an aristocratic leadership corps on the top and unwashed masses on the bottom. They treat you like you're stupid because they think you're stupid. And, if you accept their leadership, they may be right. Since you are asking about the last 20 years, I would include the decline of the middle class. The

It's unfortunate that modern Mormonism discredits religion. Saying religion could be good is like saying sex could be good. Maybe so, but after being married to the church your whole life, who wants sex?

"You're going to die sometime! You can't avoid it!" So, why would you waste your time with the Mormon church? Why give money to a church that clearly doesn't need it? Mormons invest heavily in an afterlife that is 100% speculative. It's like betting on horse you've never seen and only hope exists.

From the Donald Hoffman Wikipedia page: "Hoffman argues that natural selection is necessarily directed toward fitness payoffs and that organisms develop internal models of reality that increase these fitness payoffs. This means that organisms develop a perception of the world that is directed towards fitness, and not of reality." So, we not only don't perceive reality, but can't p

Generally speaking, facts are facts until they aren't. Most have a limited lifetime, after which they become myths and old wives' tales. Fortunately, there is a corpus of facts that don't change. These are piles driven into sand, upon which the boardwalk of civilization is built. Then there is Mormon doctrine, built upon piles of something else. But even that has had a surprisingly long run

Nobody really cares, and temple attendance is pretty bad anyway. If you don't go, you don't get your magic underwear, which is a form of spiritual protection, or your endowment, which is your personal fiefdom in Mormon heaven. If you don't believe in magic underwear and aren't a megalomaniac, there's no point in going to the temple. You can still do work on behalf of the dead. For example,

For a church that turned into a sex cult as soon as Joseph had any real power, BYU has a lot of rules around the activity that's next to murder. Students have to condone JS and BY while acting Mormon enough to get an ecclesiastical endorsement. Either those aren't normal kids or the study had insufficient controls.

Follow the money. You need to be a full tithe payer to get a temple recommend so you can go to the temple. So it's essentially a country club business model. You have to be current on your dues to enter the clubhouse. Without that, members would pay on the value they are getting from their local ward, which isn't much.

Why did the Lamanites hunt down every last Nephite? You would think that after recovering their stolen gym equipment, the Lamanites would spend all of their time working out.

You don't think the church would calculate the gains derived from your hard-earned tithing and give you a cut? I mean, it's not like some kind of religious mafia. But if it is, Rusty is Mr Big. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EIDV4lVoIzI

Google's generative AI spewed forth: "Purpose: The Urim and Thummim served as a way for the high priest to seek divine guidance and make decisions on behalf of the Israelites, particularly when facing important decisions or crises. Nature: The Bible doesn't provide a detailed description of the Urim and Thummim, but they were kept in the high priest's breastplate, which was part of t
