Garrett: You are clearly highly intelligent. As are so many people who leave the church. . . . But you must have a couple of other qualities: openness mindedness, curiosity and imagination. This article talks about how certain people are rigid and continue to believe outrageous things as opposed to more open-minded people who can give up belief in outrageous things. http://www.moth

In the process of watching. I, too, am taken aback by seeing Steve "in the flesh." I have been with Tom a couple of times so I knew what to expect. But Steve. Wow! Thanks to everyone responsible for this film.

I have been saying to family and friends that Governor Herbert is helping advance the cause for gay marriage rights. Now this opinion piece in the Salt Lake Tribune says it more eloquently: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/opinion/57378583-82/state-couples-utah-marriage.html.csp

The exit stories are all really fun to read but the exit story by bishopatheist has a terrific scene in which a high mucky-muck comes to his house to dissuade him and his family from quitting the church. The conversation is priceless!

@badseed: I absolutely agree: that the Mormon Church helped the cause of SSM by their support of prop 8. Ah, yes, the irony.

@Baura: For five years here in the state of CA (2008-2013), my spouse and I had to file married in the state of CA and single with the feds. All the states in which SSM is NOT recognized will have to do the opposite, I suspect: file married with the feds and single with the state. It is an absolute pain in the ass to have to do this. It is this chaos and confusion (and thank you, Gov.

I have wondered recently (well, since I started reading exmormon.org) what I could do about this same issue: that I asked to have my name removed in 1979 and I was excommunicated instead. So, Steve: your best guess. If I were to contact the Church and tell them that I wanted my excommunication expunged, would they just simply and straight-forwardly have to do that? When I asked to have my n

In his book entitled THE APOSTASY OF A HIGH PRIEST, Park Romney alludes to the account of a Mormon bishop having a young man castrated because this young man "would not yield to . . .and willingly give up his fiancé, to become a polygamist wife to this bishop. . . ." Huh? I have never seen anything like this discussed here on RfM. Romney suggests "There may be some controver

I read your book yesterday on my new iPad. (I love these devices!!) I loved it! Your book that is. I enjoyed the profanity, to be honest. The juxtaposition of profanity and the story of one's experience in the church was delicious to me. We have some locations in common: Northern Utah, Logan, Utah State. I, however, passed through those places about 20 years before you did. I graduated from

I just read this book, my first to read on Kindle. What a trip that is, reading a book on an iPad. I think I am hooked. I really enjoyed the book. It was suffocating for me to read of a missionary's experience--that is a missionary who really tries to do what is expected. God! I had never heard of the White Bible. How oppressive! The point of this post, however, is this: does anyone know ho

Try the Unitarian Universalist Church. It is loaded with atheists who are probably more spiritual than most Christians in most Christian churches. The Unitarians emphasize community and service.

The UU "church" is the best thing I have experienced in a long time. I've been attending a couple of months and wish I had found it years ago. The minister a couple of Sundays ago sounded like an atheist. OMG!! I loved it. I cannot wait for Sundays to roll around. I took my daughter and she felt right at home. She said it felt like an AA meeting. SO NOT A CULT. How could an

The Mormon god disappears. Or, in my case, I left the church because I realized the mormon god did not exist. The mormon's definition of god is so absurd. When the mormon god is revealed for the fraud that it is, then one sometimes goes on a search for a better "definition" of the word, god. Then one might realize at some point that there is no viable definition for the word go

I am a grad of USU (1964) and truly not interested in football. I now live in California not too far from the stadium where this game will be played. Over the years I have suffered the fanaticism of USC grads and how insane they are about the football program at USC. I am going--as a lark--to the home of a friend (she really is a friend in spite of her crazy attachment to the football pr
