I don't know why everyone is so surprised. All the religions are fleecing their congregations. Remember when Kenneth Copeland justified his jet fleet?

This issue being discussed in this post is a microcosm of a much larger problem. The resources needed for churches (as 1206 mentioned) to bring in the homeless during the winter are the same to address the problem at a national level. IMO, the homeless issue has been creeping up on the US since the 80s when Reagan cut social programs. Of course drugs has been a major influence which we've been un

I've always wondered about the life coach business, can you make a living at it? Long time ago, I had a business colleague whose wife was a weight life coach. I asked her about losing weight and she explained, "you don't lose weight, you release it". Hmmm

From Carl Sagan: "If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."

The automation elephant is never going away and has been moving along for decades, probably faster now with better technology. In the last election, there was a candidate, Andrew Yang, that proposed UBI. His book is an interesting read. Your comment that child rearing is unfashionable, I don't think so.

"OECD countries with high levels of immigration have much stronger economies." LC, we've talked about this before in other threads but immigration in the US has kept the "population pyramid" in place. Whether its birth rates or immigration, you need more people in your economy for growth.

Give the usher position a chance. I started doing the usher thing that turned into setting props before and at intermission for plays. Finally took a part in the Diary of Ann Frank. I was the Dutch sympathizer that entered with the Nazi Soldier. Met a lot of people and had a great time.

I think a lot of us feel some guilt about not spending more time with their children when they were young. I had to work, probably too much. And I try not to think about daycare. I have 7 grandchildren now and I ALWAYS have time for them.

I'm the same way. We have a rule when visiting old friends out of town, do not go to their house. It starts out nice, then a tour of their house (boring) including new renovations and then after they get comfortable, out come the politics. We always meet at Starbucks or a restaurant, people behave better in a neutral environment.

"There are people who can help with that. We call them doctors." In the majority of cases, blood work can give a wealth of information. I'm amazed what doctors can test for now. On MLMs, does anybody remember Shaklee products? One of the first dietary supplements I remember. Yes, it was BS.

I had my Mom in Dodge and Cox and Vanguard, which worked out well for her. I see the situation your Mom was in all the time. People put their trust in the wrong people and then don't audit their accounts. I can't tell you how many people near retirement are letting the foxes in the hen house. I tell everybody that wants to listen, ok, keep your high priced investment advisor but at least audit

You are correct, inflation does not keep up. So, what should have done with her money, stock market? In all due respect, your Mom was not invested well. My mother did the same thing until my father died and I took over. Rent or paid off home, you still have expenses. i.e. taxes, insurance, maintenance. Were there stairs in the house? I agree 66 or 67 is the age you take it... if you can.

Good post. When to take SS can be different for everybody. My recommendation is if you need the money or have questionable health, take it at 62. In the end it all depends on how long you live, the break even point for taking SS at 62 or 70 is somewhere around 78-79 (if I remember correctly).

When he starts trying to teach gospel, ask a few questions. 1. How much is in our combined 401ks? 2. What is our total net worth? 3. I've always wanted to live <insert place>? Don't threaten and just answer, I was just wondering....

My ex-TBM wife's bishop was a New York life insurance salesman. I used to tell her, "really, you are taking advice from this idiot?" He announced his first week that any woman on birth control would lose TR.
