iUrim and iThummim are okay smart phones. The only music available is the Mo Tab Choir, and God is the only person you can call. I hear the Old Man was really tweaked off when he found out 30% of all sales had to go to Steve Jobs. He had to raise tithing from 5% to 10% to cover the additional cost. It ain't cheap running a Celestial Kingdom. All the workers are so lazy. The only time you see them

I personally think the best thing to do would be to ignore it. That is, after all, what the members do.

If "label" is another word for stereotype I think it might have the potential to be bad. Often it is indifferent. In my opinion it depends on context. Adolf Hitler calling someone a Jew carries different meaning than Woody Allen calling someone a Jew. That's because Adolf and Woody are operating from polar opposite stereotypes. That is why I think we are constantly adjusting our labels

Your statement simply re-enforces what I was trying to say. You just used a label to re-enforce a stereotype. The label? Mormons. The stereotype? That Mormons "love the label." Don't feel bad. We all do

I am... "a Mormon" "an Ex-Mormon" "a post-Mormon" "a Christian" "a Never Mo" "an atheist" "a Muslim" "Gay" "Straight" "Theist" "Deist" The list goes on and on. We apparently love to label ourselves and others. It helps us make sense of the vast sea of individuals on our plan

For me it started with a conversation I was having with someone who was never a Mormon. He said: "You have a great ability to analyze information and find out where there are problems. Have you ever applied those techniques to Mormonism?" I said: "Yes of course, that is why I am a Mormon, because it makes so much logical sense." His reply sunk me: "Well, I hope you'

The church has much of the original documents locked up. They are well known for not allowing anyone from the outside to examine them. Further, they don't just let any old member examine them either. You have to be proven 'faithful' enough before you can even get close to them, and only with special approval. So, if you're looking for Joseph Smith's ACTUAL peep stone or his ACTUAL papyri you a

Looks like it has already been censored. I would love to find a totally uncensored LDS related board, some day.

That is awesome. I just submitted a pic. Hopefully it shows up. It depicts the first Relief Society lesson. :)

I remember a radio station that was set up in Las Vegas in 1999. They discussed how to survive the "Y2K" destruction and return of Jesus that was going to happen. The radio station didn't last long after the first of the year... but I am sure they sold loads of portable generators, canned food, camping supplies, and guns while it was on the air.

Paraphrased, this is what we tell our young children. We figure this is close enough to the truth to let us squeak by until they are older: "Some people go to church because they think that it makes an invisible man happy. Instead of going to church we spend time together as a family . We don't go to church but lots of people you know do, including Grandma and Grandpa and some of your fri

52,494 active full-time missionaries is totally realistic. Keep in mind not all missionaries beat down doors. There are full-time service missionaries, office volunteers, tour guides, etc. I am sure all of them get totaled in to that number. I bet if you did some statistical analysis you could determine general activity rate based on this number. Here is my shot: 13,508,509 claimed members.

I don't know the full story, but this young man on YouTube was apparently a former atheist who joined the LDS church. He recently made a video (below) highlighting his desire to leave the church and remain a biblical Christian. If you feel so inclined, feel free to send him a message of your support. From what I understand from some of my acquaintances, he might really appreciate it. http://ww

My advice is to only resign if it bugs you that your name is counted when they announce the number of members. If you don't care there is very little reason to do anything. Making a 'statement' by resigning is a cathartic experience for some.

We recently purchased a new refrigerator. While moving the old one out we found the below laminated card entitled "How To Be Modest." We have no idea where it came from, but it likely belonged to the woman who previously owned our house who was apparently a "young women" leader. I can only imagine the discussion that accompanied these cards. -------- HOW TO BE MODEST *

I remember talking about this with my fellow "brethren" growing up. We would sit in our tent on scout trips and talk about how you can tell if someone is an evil spirit or not using handshakes. I remember feeling like I had special and unique knowledge that some day I would be sure to use to root out some evil spirit, or meet an angel. We would go on and on talking about what we were go

Nalicea, Have you read the wikipedia article on the 4th amendment? It has some interesting links to relevant cases. The 4th amendment does not apply in all situations, in all places, or even all the time. The courts have been narrowing what the 4th means for decades. Read the section about exceptions, most notably the border search exception. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Amendment_to

I respectfully disagree with Bona's point of view. I'm not sure that most child psychologists would agree with Bona either. I believe such practices harm children. Based on my limited knowledge of child psychology doing searches in private could be even more psychologically damaging, and could open up opportunities for abuse. The problem is this: Where do you draw the line? Naked pictures? Irr

I talk fast, so, um, read fast... The concern with religion isn't that it exists or that people devote their lives to its various practices. The concern is that such beliefs demand they be inflicted on others who suffer needlessly because of it. Least of whom are children, who do not yet posses the capacity to refute the claims made and expose them as the emotional arguments devoid of any rati

The news tonight interviewed a local man regarding the recent plane crash in Payson that killed two people. He said "It's a miracle!" Apparently two people dying is proof God exists. Or maybe it was because the pilot decided to try to land in a field next to a school rather that on the roof. Whatever it was, it was a miracle. Proof God exists. So there ya go.

MIL is being kind and watching the kids all day long. We don't know a thing about being downtown on a Sunday, but we are going to attempt to spend 12 hours down there tomorrow. We thought about hitting the Oasis Cafe (never been, good?) for coffee and brunch. Then we'll hit the Gateway. Anything else we should check out?

Here are ten things my wife misses not being a Mormon: 1) I throw my dirty underwear on the floor instead of in the basket (sorry honey). 2) No more free babysitters for two hours on Sunday (poor nursery leaders). 3) No good excuse to create elaborate table top craft projects to impress other women. 4) Homemaking meeting gossip night. 5) "Holding the priesthood." Best done in the d

Of course kids under 18 are a concern, particularly (but not always) LGBT kids. However, in my understanding there are laws that help protect minors. Parents can't just kick their teen out of the house without some consequences. They can certainly make life hard though. Until you are an adult your parents have a very wide array of options in terms of what they can do. Parents might threaten to ki

Does anyone know if there are safe houses to help those who want to leave the church? It seems every week we get a message in here where someone is concerned about telling their parents the truth about their beliefs because they are afraid of being kicked out or cut off financially. I'm curious if there is a program that exists to help those who want to leave Mormonism feel they have a safe way o
