This is an interesting topic. I used to take the bible literally and I think your traditional Mormon does too. Had an interesting Sunday School lesson some time ago where the teacher (who also happens to be a famous LDS composer) chided LDS people for taking everything literally in the bible (in an Old Testament lesson). Talked about bible stories like "Jonah and the Whale", etc. He

I joked with my wife the other day that Monson and Packer are engaged in a game of chicken...Packer to outlive Monson so he can be the next prophet and Monson with Packer so he can save the Church from Packer being the next prophet

In this video, he is starting to show signs... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LeM7qCD8lU The ending just cracks me up..."peace out all!" I bet the Church doesn't let him be unaccompanied in public anymore after this came out :)

Excellent post...all this racist docrine is insane! The teachings were so obvious and blatent, I don't know how the Church can have a straight face while denying it.

Putting my thoughts together on a subject I have been thinking about for awhile... From reading Mormon Think, the recent Church essay on the different versions of the First Vision, Lectures on Faith, the Book of Mormon, the D&C, etc, I have come to realize that Joseph Smith's view on God evolved over time and it was well documented in scripture if you take the time to connect the dots. JS'

Your commentary is congruent with my observations while there. I worked there more recently, and they had an influx of new hires/contractors with experience in the private sector which made the operation more professional in the corporate IT arena (BYU was still like the Keystone Cops). Lack of good business decision making hampered the IT organization, though. Ideally, IT is supposed to serv

I don't know about "dark and evil", however I always had a feeling "something isn't quite right" or "things aren't quite as they seem on the surface". The detective/investigative reporter in me has always wanted to "put my ear to the wall" and uncover the dirt...because I just know it is there.

I've been thinking a lot about the Book of Abraham in the past months and it's implications for the Church. It is no mystery to most people in this forum that the BOA has some serious issues. Joseph Smith's translation (or lack of it) of the BOA has been proven to be way off (not even in the ballpark) by numerous prominent Egyptologists. This finding is what started my serious questioning of JS a

(From a previous post, here are my impressions for what it's worth) "My impressions of working life at the COB go a bit of something like this... Working at the COB really gave me insight into the inner workings of the corporation and a bunch of little things learned over time really eroded for me the "mystique" the Church has for a lot of members. I remember being asked in a

This whole comment is classic...a voyeuristic view into a crazy mentality... "If this is something that does not settle with you, it is a stupor of thought. The materials you are getting information from are not from God. Satan is the master of lies. He is deceptive and very good at what he does. I know thing can be alarming or disappointing but that does not mean they are truthful and ho

That's a good point exodus. Actually I went back and re-read the Plural Marriage essay and it didn't actually mention BY (I was thinking of the Race and the Priesthood essay where it specifically mentions BY). The Church conveniently limits the scope of the Plural Marriage essay to Utah :)

http://en.fairmormon.org/Emma_Smith/Brigham_Young Interesting quote from the FAIR link... Seeing numerous issues with the Church together in one document really made me step back and think "can the Church really be what it claims to be?" Taking a macro view of things after reading all the detail in the CES Letter was really huge for me (the 3 part Mormon Stories Podcast was a great supplement as well). Seeing issues one at a time makes it much easier to brush them off (so

Interesting quote from the WP article: "The essay says no eyewitness accounts have been found about the translation process. It adds that Smith did not claim to know the ancient languages he translated for the Book of Abraham or the faith’s signature scripture, the Book of Mormon." Actually from another recent RFM post, there is a link to the JS Papers that states that there are

I second NormaRae on this. I live near downtown and the culture has really evolved here due to many people moving in from out of state. I moved from out of state and it took awhile to get used to, but I have seen my neighborhood and surrounding areas evolve before my very eyes. Overall, I think you will be fine at the U of U.

I'm hope to accomplish something that I'm sure a lot of people are afraid to say.I'm keeping this anonymous due to the fact that I like my peaceful neighborhood and plan on being there for awhile. I will make myself known, if needed though (but hopefully this brings the problem to light...BTW, I'm an
