As I recall from reading "Who Really Wrote the Book of Mormon" Spaulding's nickname was "Old Came to Pass". He would read friends excerpts from his work-in-progress written on foolscap which in its Elizabethan English overused the phrase "and it came to pass" and that apparently was the inspiration for his nickname. Amazing coincidence that the BoM also overuses that

I used to read and contribute to this forum quite a lot about 12-15 years ago. I check in maybe a few times a year these days and only briefly (my how time flies!). I checked out Rusty's conference talk just for chuckles. Wow, how nothing has changed! He's talking from the "Sacred Grove" where JS's "First Vision" supposedly happened 200 years ago. The event and place that i

Dr. No Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is anyone else Shocked to their Very Toes? Ha! Not one bit! I think with all the "apostasy" going on that sooner or later someone was going to snitch. Also not surprised if this is just the tip of the iceberg. Standby for massive lying and obfuscation.

Not a big fan of Ayn Rand, but this rather quotable quote does spring to mind when thinking about the rank-and-file membership paying tithing: "It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intend

Hard to pick just one, but how about Fawn Brodie? Pretty amazing that she was brave enough to publically let her instincts as a historian reign over her Mormon background. She was also brave enough to do the same with Thomas Jefferson writing about his relationship with his slave, Sally Hemmings. She took a lot of heat for both bios and never backed down. Whistleblowers are rarely celebrated a

Got my DNA analyzed on 23andme a while back and apparently, they've been tweaking their model. I just went back to look at my analysis, and it's now showing that I'm 0.3% African from an ancestor probably in the 1700s! My racist grandfather would be fit to be tied if he were still around especially since it's from his side of the family!

Cool! Thanks for posting that. I am a big fan of saxophone and love sax ensembles. I think they rank at the top of ensembles in which all the instruments are in the same family. Very few blend as well. You are the not the only post-mo saxophonist. I always wanted a bass saxophone, so after my tbm ex-wife and I split and sold the house I bought one with the proceeds of the sale! My way of celeb

So sad to hear the news. SusieQ#1 qualifies as an RfM hall of famer. If RfM had jersey numbers, hers would deserve to be retired. In a nutshell, she was the calm, persistent, very lucid, voice of reason.

Speaking for myself alone, as an IT professional I could make 20-30k more a year if I were not in government. I am a white collar professional with a masters degree. Everyone in the IT dept where I work has a similar situation.

I'm a Federal worker. Here's my report from my corner of the universe: I'm lucky enough that the branch of gov I work for can still pay everyone through the end of next week. After that is unknown and the talk is that I will likely get furloughed. I am lucky enough that I can live off of savings for a long time. This is unlike most of my work life which was paycheck-to-paycheck especially when

I'm intrigued by the way she and A&E have spotlighted cults for an audience who wouldn't otherwise have it on their radar screen. I think both Scientology and JW orgs edge out LDS, Inc. on the cultiness index (although they're probably no match for early Mormonism!), and my heart really goes out to their ex-members. If they do enough coverage of various orgs perhaps the general population

I recently attended an event in which a Vietnamese coworker was sworn in as a U.S. citizen. Two of his nieces (ages 6 and 8 approximately) that attended were wearing traditional Vietnamese dresses that their mother had made for them. When I told them how beautiful they looked they said that they really were less than excited to be wearing them and that it was totally mom's idea. It was so funny a

I have a wrestling injury from HS in which my rib separated from my sternum briefly (joined by cartilage). Since then the joint can ache when there is a sudden change in barometric pressure, so sometimes I can feel it when rain or snow is coming because a front is moving in.

"you" used to be the plural and "thee/thou" was the singular form. Since "you" is now both singular and plural it has given rise to words like "y'all" which fills the void of a missing plural "you". I live in Minnesota and use it regularly even though it's mostly a Southern convention. As was pointed out Spanish has both the formal and familiar

I was 14 yrs. old at the priesthood meeting when he first gave that talk. I didn't even know what masturbation was exactly at the time even though I had been doing for a while, because JUST ABOUT EVERYONE DOES! After that talk I thought I was some kind of pervert doing something just this side of murder. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY THE BIGGEST MINDF*CK OF MY LIFE!! Finally some where in my mid-20s I kin

Our extended family would usually get together on Easter when my parents were alive both TBM and exmo alike. Since their passing there is little mixing on Easter and my sister and I were bemoaning the fact that no one was having an extended family get together. Another sister put something together at the last minute and invited the exmos over. It was a lovely time complete with Bloody Marys at E
