I just saw an ad for this game on my Facebook feed, and for the first time since the original Farmville, I'm tempted to actually waste some time on a game on the internet. https://www.facebook.com/games/my-planet-simulation/?fbs=203 Here, you can create and populate your own planet and allow it to thrive! Perhaps you can also introduce silly rules to the population and kill them for non-com

The interesting thing about this is that this "wilderness" is crossed by most young adults unconsciously. None of my friends from growing up ever shared with me that their 20's were a decade of decision and "wilderness." The reality is that, while this time is exciting, most young adults choose the right thing for themselves unconsciously. They get jobs, degrees, fall in l

What you're doing doesn't sound healthy. You may want to ask your boss about a new responsibility or project to work on that will truly challenge you and help you grow professionally. The fact alone that you can be on mormon.org chat your whole workday shows that you're probably not doing enough productivity-wise. On the other hand, actually accomplishing something at work will be gratifying for

I was struggling with an episode of depression a while back, and about ten people have sent me this video in Facebook messages today. I'm honestly tempted to watch it...

I've heard "more/less than a year" a lot too, but I was never told to avoid saying how long I had been out. I came home two years ago.

I just got a Facebook message a few days ago from one of the Elders who taught me before I got baptized. "Sorry to hear about you and the church. It's you choice and I support you no matter what. I wish I could have been a better example." Pretty much, this has freaked me out my entire time while in the church. Now it's just making me shake my head. This whole, "non-members

I see this happen quite a bit in the church...with justification from Alma 30:44, for example. Although, there are plenty of people I know in other faith traditions with whom one could have some truly enlightening dialogues, because they actually are capable of thinking outside of their limited world view. So I would rather describe the pattern as "Mormon/Cult thought process."

By Utah State, Utah Logan Mission. I think she was actually serving on campus last time I checked, so no 9-year-olds there I assume.

Actually, yes, unfortunately. I have one friend who is a missionary in Utah, and she says that they are baptizing weekly. Also, she hardly sees her companion because she splits with members all day, so they can go to all the lessons. To be honest, I'm really not into the idea of suggesting that the church is bad/not true because it isn't growing. That has nothing to do with it. There are gull

There are around 100,000 people in my city, some 20 to 30 of them would probably self-identify as Mormon. Needless to say, I don't run into many of them (I also spend a lot of time sitting in a room without windows, digging through huge data sets - that might also be part of the reason...). I think this was actually the first time I've talked to a member since I left. We actually had a good f

I'm puzzled as to how this got by the IRB... But my personal feeling is that rape is indeed mostly about power most of the time, and I feel like this is what the bulk of the research is still pointing at. It kind of makes sense. Plenty of legal ways to get sexual stimulation. Not a lot of legal ways to "own" a person.

Snowville, as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowville,_Utah ? It's strange that such small towns can actually write their own laws, isn't it?

I do not live in America, obviously, but when it comes to the cost of higher education, I believe that the solution lies in more a more selective admission process and an appreciation of trade schools (and skills). In fact, I believe that once this is accomplished, tuition for all qualifying students could be abolished. What we have seen in America is that, since the late 1990s, an increased

A good TBM friend of mine (as in, genuine friend) just asked me the other day if I didn't remember the good times I had in the church. I know some of you don't share this attitude, but I genuinely enjoyed being Mormon, for a while, and I still can see how being a member has been somewhat beneficial in my life. In case anyone wants to steal it, here's my full answer: "I won't forget th

The cuteness of a mission wears off quickly. Give it a few months. She may well stay out the whole 18 months, but there is a typical calming down of emotion once things get rough for the first time.

What's most interesting about it is that, when you think about it, the time spent in pointless additional meetings/callings isn't the only thing that keeps families apart on Sundays. Even those who are fortunate enough to not be consumed by a calling that takes up the whole day still spend literally no quality time as families at church. Here's why: - Sacrament meeting: The only thing families

Thank you, again, for the warm welcome. It's good (?) to hear that there are others who share part of my story. I have decided to linger a tad bit longer, and actually register. So, Anon1993 is me, and from this day forth, I shall have a new name: "friendlyeconomist."
