It would be a good idea to put GPS trackers on all of the company vehicles, in addition to using paper logs. A tracker is a back up in case an employee "forgets" to fill out the paper log and will give you additional details, including if the driver is speeding or making unauthorized side trips. GPS trackers are not very expensive these days, especially compared to the cost of a veh

It might cost some money now but will probably be cheaper than making a mistake and dealing with a lawsuit or unemployment claim later. This is not something you should handle without expert advice. I am not a lawyer, but here are my thoughts on how I would handle such a situation. I'm a big believer in forgiveness, so I would confront the employee with the facts and see what happens. If th

"Fire officials said 21 people at an event hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins suffered burns while walking across hot coals, and three of the injured were treated at hospitals. The injuries took place during the first day Thursday of a four-day event at the San Jose Convention Center hosted by Robbins called "Unleash the Power Within." Most of those hurt had second and

It's probably just a seminar sponsored by a student group. They can probably reserve a room and have anybody they want speak to whomever shows up. What do you want to bet that the audience was 90% Mormon? CZ

Publicizing such information, if it existed, would have horrific real world consequences. Innocent people would die. Missionaries would be targeted. Other, non-related American interests would be targeted. I'm leaving this up as a warning, but we will pull any more threads like it. Note to church officials monitoring this board: Please make a thorough check of your genealogical and temp

Arguing with them won't help. Facts won't help. Direct confrontations just won't work. The countercult people recommend a relaxed attitude toward the cultist you are trying to convince back to sanity. Don't talk about religion at all: instead offer them a cold drink (or a warm one if it's a cold day), talk about their family, or their girlfriend back home or their hobbies or whatever. Be f

Given their membership databases, it would be a very straightforward thing to put together: a database query and a nice Excel chart. Note to church monitors: I know you'll never let us see such a report, but if you haven't done so already, please create it and shop it around the 15. See if you can find any siginificant correlations between resignations and domestic vs. foreign missions, high-

Or call up Confidential Records and ask for Greg Dodge. When they say he doesn't work there anymore, ask who his replacement is. I figure you would have done this already, Cricket. :-) Whoever it is probably needs a morale boost. I suggest that we band together and send them Starbucks gift cards. CZ

They have the power to expedite the process. The church's policy of routing resignations through the local leaders is an artifact of prior times when resignations were rare, and they wanted the bishop to chat with you and try to talk you out of it. All the bishop does is fill out paperwork and send that to Confidential Records. If you send your resignation directly to Confidential Records, t

The didtheyreadit service uses "web bugs", which are image links in your e-mail to see when it has been read. When the recipient's e-mail software downloads the image from the link registered to your e-mail, the service then knows that the e-mail has been read. A lot of e-mail reader software, probably including most corporate systems, does not automatically download images from lin

And no, you don't have to be a member to get a calling, especially if it's a made-up one. Bishops have broad discretion when it comes to callings. Many will make up useless jobs or gives inactives or attending non-members low level callings to keep them around and interested. I've heard people from BYU student wards grumble about being "second assistant Relief Society flower coordinat

He started publishing conspiracy theories about the WTC collapse after the 9/11 attacks, and apparently the church thought it made them look bad. Jones was mixing Mormonism into his theories. I remember hearing a recording of a talk he did on the topic, for an off-campus church audience, in which he was using the term "Gadiantons" to describe the terrorists. You can get an overvi

Faster-than-light particles would break a lot of physics. For example, FTL comes hand in hand with non-causality, i.e. time travel. These kinds of measurements are tricky and need incredible precision. Systematic errors are common in such cases. Note that quantum entanglement doesn't give you FTL commuication: you can't use it to send information any faster than c. One interpretation of

I love to read about conspiracy theories, too. It might be something about our church background, and the fact that we got out: we can think like conspiracy theorists, but can't bring ourselves to believe the stuff. Umberto Ecco's "Foucalt's Pendulum" is an excellent read for those of who like to watch and laugh at conspiracy theories. CZ

Did he request name removal or did he resign? "Name removal" is some church euphemism and they can handle it or ignore it as they please. It is better to state that you are resigning your membership. Get the fax number for confidential records and have your Husband send a true resignation letter, if that's not what he did before. The fax number is handy in any case: the squeak

What it is not is *proof* of absence. If a thing is truly absent, then one bit of evidence for that absence will be a lack of evidence that it exists. Absence of evidence for a thing is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition to prove its absence. CZ (pedantic admin)
