Lots of good advice in the above comments. You sound like a very intelligent young man, and a genuinely nice guy, and I know you will work your way through this. Best of luck to you!

What I noticed was in the graph titled "Deaths, Excommunications, Resignations", there is no 'key' as to which color bar in the graph corresponds to which category.

I so appreciate the many replies from all of you re: why you converted. The original thread is now closed so I started a new one only to thank you. There was certainly a common theme throughout, particularly those of you who converted at high school age.... difficulties at home; wanting to 'hang' with wholesome kids; wanting to belong. Glaringly absent were any replies that gave the LDS doctri

I was wondering if he has COPD as he seemed to have a breathing difficulty, markedly more on expiration than on inspiration which would be indicative of emphysema. I would doubt, however that he was ever a smoker.

Am I correct in assuming that this well-written piece would be useful primarily to an 'investigator' of Mormonism?

I wonder if the church's stance against the ERA led some(especially women) away?

No, you are most definitely not being too sensitive. That is a cruel, inappropriate 'joke' that is not in the least bit even remotely funny! I am sorry you have to deal with them and, like adoylelb said, that would be the 'last straw' for me, also. Very cruel and insensitive! If that is his idea of an April Fool's joke, then, in my opinion, it is HE who is the Fool!

Surely, current problems in the Middle East would qualify as an exampleof antilocution to the extreme, as would the recent spate of bombings and the horrors of 9/11? Closer to home, and on a personal level, the prejudice of Mormons towards 'outsiders'. I was heartbroken for my daughter, who was just beginning the second grade when we moved to Utah in 1993, as she was consistently excluded from

Saucie, I love it! The above comparison to "asexual"is not valid in that asexual actually means without sex organs, or without functional sex organs and not a disbelief in, or aversion to, sex or sexual matters, though the point made by The Savior's Elf is well taken. Would people, in general, react or feel differently toward someone who says that they are an atheist if they referred

The first time I went to a Mormon baptism(we were invited to our little 8 year old neighbor's baptism), it broke my heart to hear her say that! Hell, she barely knew her alphabet at that time as she was somewhat 'learning disabled'. I had to suppress a giggle hearing her recite that while, at the same time, thinking "Oh no! My sweet little friend is being forced into this and 'another one

I recently read Wife No. 19, by Ann Eliza Young and found it fascinating. I applauded her success and national celebrity in speaking out about what she endured as one of BY's plural wives. I highly recommend the book! I was unaware that her gravesite was discovered recently.

As a nevermo, I am curious to know what you found attractive about joining tscc. I can understand the plight of those who were bic, being brainwashed basically from birth, and raised to be TBM but I don't understand what could possibly entice someone to convert, particularly those who did so since the availability of the internet. Even before then, there were libraries for research. I do know t

A others have said, let her know that you are there for her. I would most definitely let her know what he has said about her, She is lucky to have you for support, and help in leaving him, should she feel the need. She is lucky to have you.

A bit OT perhaps, but I wanted to share because I was struck by the following TBM take(the ridiculousness of it): I(nevermo) am currently residing in an Assisted Living facility in a suburb of SLC and am surrounded by(mostly) elderly TBMs. One gentleman who happens to sit next to me at meals made a comment one day regarding a gay nephew of his, "He came out of the closet just long enough t

I, too, am grateful to Steve. When I(a nevermo) first moved to Utah in 1993, I was quite active on this board, in seeking ways to understand and to deal with the shunning of our TBM neighbors and Steve was most helpful with several suggestions as well as with much insight into the Mormon mindset and attitudes.

Interesting topic. When we(nevermo) moved to Utah in 1993, my daughter was just entering the 2nd grade. Shortly before Christmas that year, she came home one afternoon after school and exclaimed, "Mommy! Did you know that Christmas is Jesus' birthday?" I instantly wondered if I had been an irresponsible parent, as we had never attended a church of any kind, nor, I quickly realized,

I thoroughly enjoyed your post! Excellent assessment. I, too am a NeverMo, and currently living in a suburb of Salt Lake City. I certainly hope that "Big Brutha" read your reply in its entirety(I, too, would assume the individual to be Mormon). Thank you again for your very interesting and enjoyable post!
