I am seriously angry right now, for reasons only partly related to this thread, so that may color my thinking. But here are two thoughts: 1) When the time comes, have a non-temple wedding, and politely inform any temple recommend holders that you don't consider them worthy to participate. 2) If a temple wedding is chosen: insist that you be allowed in. Throw things. Yell and scream. Make th

Perhaps. Morally she should be charged with practicing medicine without a license. Legally she is probably immune due to the immense lobbying of Congress from the dietary supplements industry. One of their most effective products is Orrin Hatch.

IMO: this thread was started as an off-topic one. I see it as absolutely on-topic, as the very same sentiments are what drive the Utah legislature and the leadership of the LDS church. Both those groups (and aren't they actually parts of the same group?) see the subjugaton of women as their primary calling from God.

Two historical notes: Before about 1981 there were no rules about females being Sunday School presidents. My ward called a fully capable, qualified young woman (it was a singles' ward) to be Sunday School president. She was the church's first and last female SS president. Within literally ten days of her being called, the church issued a proclamation declaring that no way in hell could a non-Prie

No, I don't. I was mainly responding to the thought process used by the DoTerra crowd, for whom magical powers are instantly assumed, and for whom absence of proof is considered absolute evidence of efficacy. I was merely trying to point out that "they" have a real hard time with what normal peole call logic. Perhaps a good exercise for them would be to watch several episodes of Colu

Watch the motion picture, "The Help". In it you will see a perfect depiction of the attitude the TSCC has toward women. I'm not referring to the "coloreds", but rather to the white women, whose place it was- and still is, in Mormondom, to simply sit back and be told what to do and never make any decisions on their own.

My daughter is at camp as we speak. In the itemized list of camping gear, "modest" clothing- covered shoulders, no shorts, T-shirts over swim suits, "modest" sleepwear- is required. In 2013. Do they think that without these strong rules that every girl would otherwise plan to wear the sheerest of babydolls, to show off her shapely thighs and full breasts and pointy nipples?

I think it is clear to everybody on this site that large segments of society fear, loathe and despise atheism. Atheists are continually being called on to justify their "choice", as if the default condition for any sane person is to readily acknowledge the existence and potency of God. Theists see belief in God as a moral imperative, and hence atheists are the worst kind of sinners, bec

I'm being bold here, but IMO science has told us more about religion than any religion has. Science has shown us unambiguously that religion is ultimately an invention of the human brain. That leaves open several questions, such as the how and why certain ideas take hold in a particular individual's brain, but to claim that religion holds the key to any sort of cosmic consciousness outside of eac

My parents sent me "Defender of the Faith" by Truman Madsen, about B. H. Roberts. This was a long time ago, way before the internet. But even at that time I recongnized the major omissions, like the fact that Roberts was not a defender of the faith at all. I threw the book in the garbage.

Celestial marriage meant polygamous marriage. That's why the term was invented. It was reserved for the few, the chosen, who were willing to participate. It was instituted to justify the practice, because then it meant that God himself approved. The whole idea of the temple was to promote polygamy. The endowment was to form a secret club of polygamists. The garments identified the members of this

Remember that in the early years of what would later become the LDS church, it used crosses as much as anybody else. Somewhere along the way soembody go the bright idea that crosses were too Catholic or something like that. Several people have written about the change. See if you can find their reports somewhere. Thanks.

IMO, the sad thing is that it didn't used to be this way. In my youth the church was a vibrant, locally-directed organization that wanted to engage with the non-LDS world. Over the years things changed dramatically. One influence was Correlation, which quickly morphed from a well-meant attempt to standardize doctrine (and tone down the more outlandish fringes) into an Inquisition-like control

Another inevitable result will be outright fights between stir-crazy young men. When I was on my mission I never wanted to go clubbing or get drunk with my companions. I did, however, want to smack some of them in the face. The whole reason for paring missionaries up is to make sure they follow the rules. Most of them will follow the rules. But everyone has their breaking point.

IMHO, he would qualify in every aspect, since the TR requires only that you say the right things during the interview. There is absolutely no requirement on the part of the interviewer to actually check up on any of the answers. So when a child molester, wife beater or adulterer goes in for his or her recommends (usually males), all he needs to do is say yes and no to the questions. Especially th

For me, the ultimate factor is the promise of converse with celestial beings. The implication is that the GA's do it all the time, and the reason the rest of us don't is personal wickedness. That is, in my mind, the biggest fraud of all.

If you look carefully, you will see (in the church magazines) that the church is teaching young people from Day One that the only point to their existence is to be a missionary. These messages will ensure that a very large percentage of 18 year olds will have no reservations whatsoever about doing whatever the church leaders tell them to do. It is so sad. I think of many of the native america

What about all those people who do believe in God and still suffer horrible deaths? In science it's called a control group. In life it's called tragic.
