I was just thinking how conditioned we all are to accept the things said & beliefs of those in authority, without thinking for ourselves. My TBM mom said she likes that the church teaches eternal families - that other religions don't teach that. I disagreed and said that most other religions do teach that now - maybe not 200 years ago, but now they do. And it occurred to me that Joseph's &quo

How did he manage to marry a second wife in the temple with the first wife still around? "Divorced" his first wife civilly, but still a duo?

I guess there are some women who do go for it, I just think that the majority of women who are practicing it anywhere in the world feel forced or pressured to do so either by men or by God. It's not a voluntary thing for women in any sense in any culture.

But this isn't Utah, which is why I'm so shocked. It's not the heart of mormon or polygamy country. Still, it is what it is. I just never thought I'd see it here, or actually know someone doing it (and they looked so normal!). I live a sheltered life ;-) I was thinking, thank God when I had questions about the church that I investigated the "anti" instead of delving into the apologis

At least trying to, not getting legally married (oh but that was the same as in Nauvoo, too), but having the second "wife" live in the home and do all wife duties. She just escaped and said it was mental, emotional, and sexual abuse. Holy hell. This isn't in the US, or the places in Canada that are polygamy hotbeds. (It is Canada, though.) Damn, I never did like the guy, but neve

Something about: Whatever I think in my own mind, I take as the word of God... I don't do that with the church, though, of course. Anyone remember this, and could you reference it?

I just read through the first little bit and it says there's no scriptural reference to indicate that the second anointing ever took place, and it also says that Tom Phillips has been excommunicated. Someone please set the record straight over there. (Sorry, I just can't do it, and must leave it to others.) There must be many more fallacies in the article, too.

Due to scientific articles, a TBM I know now agrees that Adam didn't necessarily live 6000 years ago, but that the lineages in the bible and BoM (Ether) skip generations and that Adam can go back to 350,000 years ago, or earlier. Anyone heard this before? Doesn't the BoM / Ether delineate who begat whom and link it up to Adam 6000 years ago? (My understanding was that it did, and it couldn't

This. I did all of this wrong and it's taken almost 4 years to repair. And I had a similar circumstance - DH was 1st counsellor in Bishopric at time.

Can anyone point me to a link that shows the Nauvoo polygamy denial affadavit? The one where Joseph and many of his plural wives all swore before God, on the bible, that they only practiced monogamy? Thanks in advance to all you super-knowledgable people.

Three, but I don't even express my true feelings about Christianity & spirituality to them because I know they wouldn't appreciate it. But they (one in particular) feel it's fine to talk about their religiosity all the time. But then again, maybe it's because I never really talked openly about religion to people when I was a member, either, but other people are comfortable with it. It's j

A good friend just informed me that she, her husband and 4 children have all left the church. She is the most spiritual, and kind person and their family is absolutely awesome. I'm so happy for them! And honestly, I didn't think they'd ever leave, but the church essays were the last straw. (It helped that they were burned out - used up by the ward they were in and due to life circumstances.) O

Isn't there a scripture in D&C (or is it BoM?) that states that those who died without the law were automatically saved, and had no need for baptism? I would prefer a D&C reference, if anyone knows.

Some things to remember: 1. the journal states July 15, NOT a date in early spring. 2. in the excerpt below, it states that JS jr. was likely in Manchester for the work season, NOT at home, where the first vision is supposed to have taken place. (Remember, JS was to stagger home and say to his mother that he had learned for himself that presbyterianism was not true, and all this AFTER his

Lucy Mack Smith spoke about men coming to ask Joseph to find treasure for them with his seer stone - all because he had the keys / ability to see such things. (found in her biography of Joseph Smith, can't remember the name of the book. Someone on the board will know...) It is a case of magical folklore turned doctrine again.

Raptor Jesus: "And the more I studied about early Christianity, the more I realized that Mormonism doesn't have the first clue about their own claim." Could you explain more about this? I am fascinated by this subject also and am trying to figure out what to do with Jesus now that I am an ex-mormon. For a while I was atheist/agnostic leaning, and have read several books debunking chr

And yet Joseph Smith also said that Emma would be with him in the celestial kingdom even if he had to go to hell and back to get her. (So even if she was trying to get away from him she couldn't :-P) 1. Joseph Smith apparently has reign over who goes to hell, not Jesus or HF 2. Mormonism doesn't really believe in hell, sorta, maybe. 3. The idea that the sealing saves the people, and

I just read a book wherein the author spoke about a scientific study analyzing the effects of using curse words vs. substitutions and peoples' subsequent ability to withstand pain. Yep, people could withstand pain better when they used the straight-up cuss word rather than the pansy substitute. Sorry, I have no reference, I just read it in a book, but I think it was a rather recent study -

Don't quote me but I think it goes back to the Egyptians and the pharaoh's being gods. If they were a god then they could only marry someone godly like them - a family member; sister, half-sister, cousin.

Are you sure that's what it means? That's a disgusting interpretation. JS is such a scumbag. 41 And as ye have asked concerning adultery, verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man receiveth a wife in the new and everlasting covenant, AND IF SHE BE WITH ANOTHER MAN, AND I HAVE NOT APPOINTED UNTO HER BY THE HOLY ANOINTING, she hath committed adultery and shall be destroyed." Is the holy
