These figures are also misleading and ultimately understating LDS Corp's real estate ownership. Years ago, I was living in Mount Pleasant, Utah. At one point, LDS Corp decided that they wanted to sell the 'Bishop's Warehouse' that they had there. I decided to make an offer. LDS Corp took a long time to consider this offer (it had to be reviewed by something like 5 different committees/off

There is abundant information that the slave trade of whites was a common practice in the early 1600s, taking victims from the British Isles and other European countries. Here is one raid that took hundreds of slaves (for both sale and to ransom) from Iceland . . . “The early decades of the seventeenth century were the great heyday of the Barbary corsairs. Not only did they swarm the Medit

I once worked as a special education teacher in a major school district in Utah. One of the district-level consultants was a single woman in her late 20s. Besides her 'day job' she was working on completing her doctorate degree in education. She was also interested in finding a husband and starting a family. At that time, she was dating a fireman. They appeared to be compatible and happy

I have a sister who has the predilection of - upon finding a point of particular emotional vulnerability - sticking a knife into that point and twisting the blade. She can be quite cruel. She is also the only one of our family who has retained membership and full activity in LDS Corp (TBM). I don't know if these two factors are necessarily related, but it makes for an interesting combinat

My sister died at the age of 58 nearly 4 years ago (esophageal and stomach cancer). She was born and raised ‘in the church’ but had permanently parted ways with it when she was about 18 years old. She had married twice, the second time to a man identified here as K** C. This man was divorced and had two young sons. They were married for 5 years, and I was not privy to details of their estr

I had forgotten about this. We lived in SLC in the 1960s. My older brother got married. He was 19, she was 18. If I remember correctly, my brother needed parental permission to get married, and his bride did not. I remember thinking that was quite odd...

Why are people so willing to kill each other in the name of a made-up god? The wisest quote from the article: "From now on we're not going to believe any religion that enters our region because it's a danger to us. We're afraid of what we've seen," said Pacifico Blanco. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/panamanian-village-sleepless-with-fear-after-ritual-killings/ar-BBZbA5a?

I've been binge-watching The Handmaid's Tale. It looks like a dystopian society that would appeal to some hard-core evangelists. I keep looking for parallels with Mormonism, like the comment that the handmaids must always go out in pairs in order to watch and report on each other (like the LDS Corp missionaries) rather than for safety, as they're told. I'm surprised the don't call each other 'br

I did eventually get my money back from the two 'undependable' employees, but they just weren't making their repayments as promised. I was surprised at how easily (and well) they lied when making 'promises.' One of them later asked to borrow more money to pay for a lawyer to file bankruptcy for her (the attorney was understandably asking for cash payment in advance), but I declined.

When I worked at a retail store (in Idaho), a fellow worker (non-Mormon) used these payday loans ALL THE TIME. She usually borrowed $200 to $300 at a time, and was paying 16% for each 2-week loan. She was contantly rolling over her loans, paying just the interest ($32 for a $200 loan, and $48 for a $300 loan, for example). I watched her do this for MONTHS. She was not shy about talking to u

How does LDS Corp. justify not accepting Medicaid as legitimate health insurance at BYU-Idaho, but DOES accept it at the BYU-Provo and Hawaii campuses? They can't. But it's fun to imagine them squirming when asked this by news outlets and student groups.

Decades ago (when I had a few Mormon books in my house), I had a copy of Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. I actually read most of it in the 1970s. I remember reading that Joseph Smith said that the women of the church can give healing blessings, if they are so moved to do so. I remember that distinctly, because there was always so much emphasis placed on the men's priesthoods, whil

In regards to the earnest money: I made an offer and gave them 30 days to respond (as per realtor's suggestion, as it had to go through multiple committees within LDS Corp.) After 30 days, no response. I did not immediately ask for return of earnest money. One week later, I was told that the offer was accepted. By that time, I had changed my mind. I asked for return of the deposi

LDS Corp does "sell" real estate occasionally. But under certain conditions. When I lived in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, many years ago, LDS Corp was selling a building that had served as a bishop's storehouse. I wanted to convert it into a very large home. I made an offer and put down an amount as earnest money. While I was reviewing the paperwork, I noticed that LDS Corp was retaining
