No, they're not, but others get to raise their kids with funny notions (short of whatever definition of abuse is in use at any given time) whether we like it or not.

Without knowing anything about that board, I have to disagree with your claim. People get banned from boards all the time for not agreeing with the groupthink, not necessarily just for purposefully causing trouble.

Why would you want to destroy a community? Yeah, they're nutbars, but whatever. They're grownups. They can live however they want unless they're breaking laws, in which case they can, will, and have been dealt with. I don't like the FLDS, particularly, and if there is true sexual abuse taking place they should get it with both barrels, but people have a right to keep whatever company they

I understand your discomfort, but it sounds to me like you're doing an excellent job of teaching your kids to think for themselves. But I know it is scary to see her with the Mormon girls and all their cattiness and two-facedness...it sounds that she's aware of some of that, though, and is clever and perceptive to see what Mormon females are truly like to each other, which might wind up being

Devin, I am right there with you--also a Christian, also a nevermo, but greatly concerned about friends and family who are suffering in various ways under the yoke of the Mo church (even if they can't see the real source of their distress). I've been lurking here for a very long time, but only recently started posting, and I rarely do because I don't have direct knowledge of many of the topics

Maybe people believe that tolerating/ignoring the crazies is better than "beating the crap out of them."

Are they allowed to accept invitations to dinner from nonmembers if there's zero chance the host will wind up joining the church? If they are, and if they accepted an invite to stop by for a meal with my family, would they then pester me until the end of their mission with trying to convert us?

Can't speak for other denominations, but here's what my Lutheran branch says on the topic: http://www.elca.org/Growing-In-Faith/Worship/Learning-Center/FAQs/Rebaptism.aspx Good luck with your faith journey : )

You're going to mock any answers you get, so why bother asking, other than to bait those you feel so intellectually superior to?

As a Christian, the thing that bothers me the most about the Mormon church is the middleman aspect. Do you feel that a bunch of people--the church hierarchy--have the knowledge and authority to dictate the relationship between you and Jesus? Do you feel it's appropriate to sit through a worthiness interview with some well-intentioned fool off the street (otherwise known as the bishop) who w

Yes, I agree with you in mildly disagreeing with BadGirl in blaming religion for that woman's actions. That was my point too--that religious belief or activity does not cause mental illness in the mentally healthy. However, the troubled may be attracted to certain elements of religious life, in turn giving the appearance of causation.

And it very well might have been their crazy that led them to seek out that religion in the first place.

Eh, crazy people are just crazy. Religion is just the framework that some of them organize their crazy on. Either way--it's tragic. Poor child.

I would actually like the missionaries to stop by--I'd like a chance to invite them in, fix them a snack, have a nice chat, and give them a break from the constant rejection they must get. I can't help but look at them and think about how that's some other mother's son...they seem so young and sweet to me. Unfortunately the one time they did ring the doorbell, it was at about 7:30 pm and

Agreed. OP, (if you're indeed genuine), you will do yourself a huge favor by focusing on your own personal interests and goals and let what's going to happen, happen. The future's a big place, hon, and there are a lot more possibilities than either riding off into the sunset with this missionary, or not. Maybe it'll work out, maybe not, but there are a lot of fish in the sea.

I like the IUD option someone else mentioned, because it's *thisclose* to being permanent, but also easily removable. You never have to think about it at all, but it's a piece of cake to remove if you ever decide to have another child. I also liked that with one $30 copay and a day's worth of aspirin/taking it easy after it was inserted, we were set for ten years.

There are lots, and lots, and lots, of other churches out there that have outstanding programs for kids without all the hooey.

Can't help but wonder--with all due respect--how a church whose supposed most holy and inspired people are celibate men can claim any kind of authority. How exactly does a clergy comprised exclusively of men with abnormal sexuality (I consider celibacy abnormal) reflect reality for the other 99% of humanity? How exactly can these men be expected to understand or have any real insight into h

I object to the mindset that all men are potential child molesters and can't be trusted around children. Some daycare centers have a policy that men cannot change diapers. Seriously?! I wonder if they get to change the diapers of or bathe their own children. It is very beneficial for children to interact with adults who are not their parents, and not strictly women. Given the growing fem

You don't have to apologize for leaving your child's side; that attitude of "Well you took your eyes off him for a millisecond so it your fault there was a near tragedy!!!!!!!" is ludicrous. A normal family is filled with caring adults whom a parent can trust absolutely with their children, in the parent's absence. That your relative turned out to be a nutball does not make you guil

Lovely : ) A lot of that language is reminiscent of publications of my own denomination, the hippier-dippier branch of the Lutheran church. We ain't perfect, but we're tryin', am I right?

Again with the church presuming to dictate how a husband and wife should handle extremely intimate matters. Arrogant and disgusting and I don't know how you guys could stand it. For any TBMs lurking--Really, truly: outside the Morg, no unqualified fool will ever presume divine authority to give you harmful unsolicited advice on your sex life/marriage. Come on out! It's nice out here!

I'm a nevermo so can't relate to your exact experience and wouldn't presume to comment on it directly--but I still find posts such as yours on the subject of how Mormons relate socially to be enormously helpful. I've had a number of problems in friendships with Mormons and it took me some time to put two and two together and figure out the pattern that they all seemed to share had to have so

Thank you for the points you made. I have *headdesk* moments all the time because of the stereotypes and pigeonholes that inform the thinking of many. I am a devout Lutheran who believes very firmly in evolution and in scientific inquiry. In fact my wonder and awe at the natural world was where my faith begain to grow. I get tired of the "all religious people are science-denying id

I don't understand--if she follows Jesus and rejects the Mormon stuff, why does she go to a Mormon church instead of a mainstream Christian church?? Why sift through a pile of shit to get to the penny in the middle?
