So I posted not too long ago about my son who will soon be going to the Manchester NH mission. I recently heard that the LDS church only allows missionaries to use MyLDSMail to send and receive messages. Also heard that the missionary accounts are monitored by the church, or rather, the local mission. So here's my concern: what rights do I have when it comes to corresponding with my son? Un

Thank you so much caffiend, for the helpful info, and the offer of support (as in, a safe place of refuge) along with east coast exmo! Sad that one even has to consider such a scenario, but some missions are all-too toxic. Nobody knows for sure how things will go until they actually get there, but at this point, I think my son will be okay. It's taken me a while along my ex-mo journey to reac

thanks summer, your post was very insightful and helpful. We're northern Californians, but my son is going to school at Utah State in Logan, so he's lived with snow and cold, but as you said, it's a different kind of cold in New England, and we'll have to prepare for that. I like that New Englanders aren't flashy, and I definitely got the deep-rootedness of the people and the place when I was b

Thanks for the tips, Godtoldme. Yeah, I don't think he's expecting to baptize much, if at all, but I'll tell him. I actually spent a few days visiting a friend in Peterborough, NH some years ago and I enjoyed the beautiful scenery (it was May, lilacs were everywhere) and the down-to-earth New Englanders I met. Good to know about shopping in NH, I'll pass that along as well.

Re: "polished shafts" LOL knowing my son, he'd probably be the one making those jokes, or at least laughing at them. After all, he's only 19, they're still kids in most ways. At least he waited a year before going; we talked about that and he agreed it wasn't a good idea to just jump into a mission right out of high school.

Yes, I knew there was a large Catholic population; a lot of French Canadians came to Manchester to work at the mills, and quite a few people in the area are their descendents. I'm not thrilled at the prospect of my son being a salesman for an obsolete product for the next two years, but as others have already pointed out, it's a beautiful area and there are some great (non-religious) people, so h

So my 19 year old son received his mission call. I talked to him quite a bit about all the uglier scenarios he could encounter as a missionary, including potential abuses within the LDS missionary program itself, but after talking it through at length, he decided to go ahead, and will soon be headed to Manchester, NH. So I'm wondering if any RfMers have served there, or know much about the are

There have been several recent discussions on the subject, but I haven't seen this article posted yet, so here's the link: http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/johnwright/32_young_lgbt_mormons_have_committed_suicide_since_early_november_group_says "Thirty-two young LGBT Mormons reportedly have taken their own lives since early November — when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day

Haven't seen this posted here yet, a recent article by a 17 year old who moved from NYC to Utah. "My friends told me it would be a culture shock; they worried I could get jumped, assaulted, or excluded because of my sexuality. I ignored them, chalking their fears up to too much media hype over the LGBTQ community's fight for rights, some lazy stereotype about red states. I thought that no

Hadn't seen this posted already, so I thought I'd mention it. One of the things that bothers me most about TSCC is the deeply homophobic culture. Glad to see this couple be officially recognized as parents of their child. http://fox13now.com/2015/07/15/federal-judge-orders-utah-to-put-same-sex-couple-on-their-childs-birth-certificate/

Thanks for the responses, everyone! I'll try to reply to a few things here. As far as the outdoors, I'm certain my son will enjoy it. I remember driving through Logan Canyon and seeing Bear Lake. My ex's mother was from Star Valley Wyoming, so we made the trip up there through Cache Valley and beyond when the kids were little. @Villager: yes, I've heard that Utah State has become much more 'h

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I've posted, but I've got a son heading off to Utah State next month and I'm wondering if any Logan ex-mo's can help me out here. A brief synopsis: I resigned from the church a few years back. Grown daughter just finished 4 years at UC Berkeley & no longer attends church, son heading to Logan is TBM but not obnoxious about it. Son is going from a

I was in the same stake as the "massaging dentist." He was on the high council for a while; I remember him speaking in the Davis ward a few times. Something about him always seemed a bit 'off' to me; when things hit the fan with him, I realized why. I did a brief search and found a couple of articles: http://www.davislifemagazine.com/2010/03/speaking-up-and-out/#.VMvmsmjF-Hg http

"A confidential survey distributed to some Brigham Young University students reveals the depths of ignorance the Mormon Church’s top leadership has about homosexuality. Students were told the survey was created to screen students for a focus group designed to better understand Millennial’s attitudes about “same-sex attraction,” yet it makes clear that “gay” is not an option — l

"Uhhh", you're right, the article itself isn't homophobic. My original post was about a lady who wrote a letter to the editor after she saw the article. She got all worked up because she didn't want to see a gay couple make front-page news in pristine Rexburg. Here's her letter: http://www.rexburgstandardjournal.com/opinion/appalled-at-article-on-front-page/article_4c833bc8-1f32-11e3

Wow, thanks for all the research, Once More! Sounds like Idaho Falls is a bit more progressive than Rexburg, at least for SE Idaho. And I especially liked the comments by Jacob Braun.

I heard about this piece of garbage from someone who has kids that are younger than mine. Seeing just a few pages was enough to make my stomach churn. It's not enough to see innocent little children being indoctrinated every Sunday at the local cult building. It's not enough that little toddler girls are now being "slut-shamed" with the modesty-obsessed bullsh*t that TBMs are glowing a

You were in the same mission at the same time as my ex-husband! And my ex thought very highly of President Walker, who gave him what I now consider to be some very damaging personal counsel/advice that directly impacted our relationship. For some time, I've wanted to find out more about this particular mission president and the mission itself.Though my ex and I have a good relationship for th

Mr.Happy, Son wasn't really that enthusiastic about it. He said he kind of wanted to go because it sounded good thanks to his dad & stepmom talking it up (dad never went, stepmom participated and had only good things to say about it, of course). Son knows I value his thoughts and feelings, and he sounded relieved when I told him he didn't have to go. As far as the kids going to church:

Thanks everyone, for the responses. Yeah, this is pretty much what I expected to hear, and reinforces my decision to not let my son go. My ex and I have worked really hard to have a healthy relationship for the sake of the kids, and he can and does see reason, on those occasions when you can break through the TBM haze. Kids are primarily with me, but we live pretty close to each other so our time

It's been quite a while since I've posted on RfM but every now & then some issue comes up that I have to vent about, and this one just came at me yesterday. Brief personal synopsis: I was raised Catholic, joined TSCC at 19, after 22 years of it finally wised up and got the hell out. Ex husband is TBM, his 2nd wife is TURBO TBM. Our daughter is 20, Berkeley student, very NOM, very feminist,

Since today was the big day of the "Mormon Reformation", I posted about the event on FB. A friend of mine (non-LDS) saw the post and shared it on his FB page. I commented on it, and a mutual LDS acquaintance simply couldn't keep her mouth shut and got in our grills. I'm sharing the relevant conversation, between "Her" (LDS mutual friend), "Him" (non-LDS gay friend),

karriew, OMG, just, OMG. I'm appalled. And since I live in the Sacramento area and have all of my life, including the 22 years I was Mormon, I'll be even more appalled if it turns out that I know any of the concerned parties. I'd like to ask for some more info, but I don't want to do it on this forum. If you happen to see this, could you email me? meggiemay17@yahoo.com You don't have to i

I really enjoyed getting to know you at the last meetup in Sacramento and with everything that's been going on in your life you were on my mind quite a bit. Yes it kinda sucks that you couldn't be open
