That seems a bit circular. We know the motive from the behavior. How do you know the motive from the behavior? Well we assume a certain motive goes with a certain behavior. And how do you test whether or not you are correct? Well we notice the behavior and from that can see the motive. I think that most people are not aware of their own motives, much less the motives of someone else. In

Yes specially given that Oliver had worked as a school teacher. If the translation was given word for word by the stone....er, I mean by the Holy Spirit working through the stone. Then that makes the KJV passages very problematical. Specially given that KJV translation errors crept into the BOM text. But, on the other hand, we are told that Joseph just had the ideas put into his head and

My comment: "When Joseph cheated on her with his secret "plural wives" it must have devastated Emma. She held her head high, though." It's now awaiting "approval." Do you think it will be approved?

What was missing from the Bible was clarification on a lot of topics that were discussed in Joseph Smith's time and place. Alexander Campbell nailed it in his review of the BOM in 1831: "This prophet Smith, through his stone spectacles, wrote on the plates of Nephi, in his book of Mormon, every error and almost every truth discussed in N. York for the last ten years. He decides all the g

You could have said that Elisha Otis invented the Otis Safety Elevator, an improvement on existing elevators, in 1852 the year BEFORE ground was broken for the Salt Lake Temple. The next year the Otis Elevator Company was founded. The temple wasn't completed until 1893 and major changes were made during its construction. The story about the elevator shafts being put in before elevators were in

By the way. The peep stone that Joseph Smith used was found while digging a well for a neighbor, Willard Chase. It belonged to the Chase family and Joseph borrowed it with the promise to return it. The Urim and Thummim was used on the 116 pages that were lost and, according to Emma Smith, the angel then took the U&T back as punishment for losing the 116 pages. When translation started u

Note how Maxwell carefully edits any quotes to eliminate the "stone in the hat" part. From a reading of this one might think "stone" refers to a stone in the Urim and Thummim rather than in a hat. GAs are very adept at using weasel words to say one thing while appearing to say another.

My brother was a lifelong CES employee. He ended up as an institute director. During that time he, sensing that I was less than totally-committed to Mormonism (now THERE'S an understatement!) wanted to dialogue about the Church with me. Maybe he said he could convince me or maybe I could convince him. We went back and forth for about 5 years in emails. I was amazed at how easily he disrega

You point out the difficulty in determining the motive for one act when you had a criminal trial where the both sides had subpoena power and a judge and bailiff to force testimony and another side to cross-examine. If it's difficult to determine motive in that situation it's downright impossible in the average situation.
