A second cover story in Newsweek about Mormonism. If the Mormon church is newsworthy then the fact that there is a huge and growing ex-mo movement should be part of that news. And, as in any good journalism, the reasons behind us should also be part of that story.

The president is just one of a huge, extended committee that runs things. They said stuff about Ezra Taft Benson before he became president about how over the top he'd be. All he did was tell everyone to read the BOM. BKP as prophet won't be much of a change.

The beginning of this video is apropos. The rest if it gets political but, what the hey? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmsOIjzQ1V8 Here's a song that I doubt the MoTabs will be covering any time soon (although Frank Zappa did): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-n5vG2SjJY Lucille Bogan recorded "Shave 'em Dry" in 1935 when the Mormons taught that she and her kind were cursed

"Rootie toot toot, rootie toot toot, We're the girls of the Institute. We don't smoke and we don't chew, And we don't go with the boys who do." The purpose of "Institute" is to undo the obvious thrust of the education that you are getting at the university. Since reality has a strong anti-Mormon bias, Institute has to provide an Anti-Reality Indoctrination Program (AR

When instructed to bow my head and say "yes" I bowed my head and muttered "bullshit." It went unnoticed in the sea of mumbling sounds. I also shook hands with a GA in the temple. His powers of discernment didn't seem to catch me.

So they send Haslam to get instructions from BY as to what to do. Haslam evidently takes too long so they have to give it their best guess as to what BY would want them to do. These people who knew BY intimately, who had sat and counseled with him on many occasions, who included at least one adopted son of BY decided that what BY wanted them to do was massacre 120 or so men, women, and children

1 Nephi 3:7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them. Doctrine and Covenants 124:49 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandmen

July 1, 1802 - "Joseph Smith" signs the following statement before the town clerk of Randolph, Vermont: "I Do not agree in Religious opinion With a Majority of the Inhabitants of this Town." This is a request to be exempted from the regular Congregational tax. Although Joseph Smith Sr. (Father of LDS founder) may have been in Randolph, Vermont on this date he is not the onl

You deduced "Mormon" just from the mode of dress and grooming? Your Modar must be a lot better than mine. Without a CTR ring or tell-tale garmie lines, etc, it's often easy to mistake a gentile for a Mo.

Changes in temple ceremony no longer requiring obedience of wife to husband after the woman's movement gained success in the world is another example of God giving in to social pressure.

This is an excellent description of Kerry Shirts who puts up videos with the lamest arguments that are 1 minute of giving "information" and 9 minutes of victory dancing. Baura's rule of evidence: If the person presenting the evidence has to tell you how strong the evidence is, then it's not strong.

The insidious aspect of "setting an example" is that it leads to extremes. Don't have a cola drink (even though not really against the word of wisdom) because you need to SET A GOOD EXAMPLE by going overboard. Act like you really love Sacrament meeting so you will SET A GOOD EXAMPLE for others etc. Do all kinds of things you normally wouldn't go just because it SETS A GOOD EXAMPL

Oh ye of little faith They don't just ask the members to trust them. Each year in conference some accountants who are Temple-worthy Mormons stand up and say that they've gone over the books and that there is nothing wrong in them and that the money has been handled appropriately. Of course as they say that Dallin Oaks is sitting there listening to them--the same guy that has repeatedly sai

What the GAs have is access to Church History people. The GA writing a book picks up his phone, calls the Church History person and says "I need a quote and a story illustrating thus-and-so" and the Church history people get right on it and supply the GA with the story, the quote and the footnote. All the GA has to do is set it up. Same with conference talks.

From Ezra Taft Benson's talk "14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet" -- Tenth: The prophet may well advise on civic matters. When a people are righteous, they want the best to lead them in government. Alma was the head of the Church and of the government in the Book of Mormon; Joseph Smith was mayor of Nauvoo and Brigham Young was governor of Utah. Isaiah was deeply involved in gi

Dear Bishop: OK, you might be right. Maybe I'm overlooking something. The Book of Mormon states that there was a thousand-year civilization of Hebrews on the American continent. That they built large cities and wrote in a combination of Hebrew and Egyptian which they called "reformed Egyptian." Please show me one example of either Hebrew or Egyptian (or a hybrid of the two) wri

Sheri is an intelligent, attractive woman. She has a good-paying job. By just about any criterion she's a real catch. Yet in a culture that worships marriage (except for gays) and even commands marriage, she is single. I can only assume it's because she has an unbelievably horrible personality.

June 30, 1842 - Joseph Smith, who had recently filed for bankruptcy, replies to one of his creditors: "The influence this step may have upon our society is a matter we cannot stop to consult, as we had no alternative left." June 30, 1843 - Joseph Smith preaches to a crowd of 8000 people in Nauvoo: "I wish the lawyer who says we have no powers in Nauvoo may be choked to death o

Your description pretty much fits mine. I kept attending for a few YEARS even after I KNEW it was bogus. It was the only community I had. But it was toxic. To be constantly told by those around you that people like you are "unworthy," takes its toll.

From the article: "Similarly, the book of Isaiah is largely thought to have been written by two distinct authors, with the second author taking over after Chapter 39. The software's results agreed that the book might have two authors, but suggested the second author's section actually began six chapters earlier, in Chapter 33." The second author of Isaiah (called "Deutero
