You listed a few books, but said nothing about them. Which similar studies are you referring to? Have any of these studies been duplicated anywhere? If so, by whom and where? The entire basis of the scie

I read a pretty critical review of the book, so I'm interested in which parts you felt were really informative. The review is by Robert M. Price. http://www.robertmprice.mindvendor.com/rev_maccoby_mythmaker.htm I'm only really starting my historical study into the New Testament, but many scholars argue that early Christianity was far more diverse than could be accounted for by Paul as the foun

I remember reading that and being completely shocked that the church historian had not told his daughter. My mother had taught us from when I was really young. I didn't know about JS marrying other men's wives, but I knew he had many, many wives.

I have absolutely no idea why Brian Hales would post that on his own website. It just shows how nuts he is.

I think this is really good. If it were me, I'd probably spell out that I wouldn't care if he were gay, bisexual or not. You've already said you'll love him no matter what, and I think that it would help reinforce the message.

This is the whole point, that if you only list one or two, then the apologists will say that they can be explained by this or that.

Now I'm staying up late at night worrying that if Mohammad was the true prophet then I think we're screwed. Why does JS get a privileged position in Hale's world?

Grew up in the 60s and 70s in an uber-TBM, many generation Mormon on both sides. 1. Were you ever taught that Negroes were the cursed children of Cain? Of course. Fence sitters in the pre-existence, everyone knew that. 2. Were you taught that the Curse of Cain was a doctrine of the Church, or simply speculation and "folk belief" among some Members and leaders? Of course it w

It's not going to help. If anything, it will make it worse, with more and more missionaries packing up and leaving early. With the Internet, more people are realizing it's a stupid idea. I expect the number of missionaries to drop back to previous levels in a few years. There will be more sisters going, but it's the lack of eligible men in the 30+ age bracket which is hurting TSSC the mo

Other people have been better at predicting these things. After it was determined that that was a strong pent-up demand from sister missionaries going, the initial thought was that it would go from 58,000 to over 100,000 sometime this year and up to 110,000 next year. Recently, it's been downgraded, and the best guess estimates are in the uppers 80,000s to 90,000. The peak number should be

Too bad! I moved from Tokyo to here in Taiwan last year. I went to the Fukuoka mission in '81 to '83. I went and moved back to Japan in 1990 and then stayed there until last year. Too bad, I'd like to meet other ex-Mo with connections to Japan.

Mormonism allows the worst in abusive parents. I had been terrified that my children would have similar issues as me, my brothers and sisters, my mother, my aunts, my cousins, etc. But I see them now at almost 6 and 4, and how completely different their reactions are to the world and to my wife and I, compared to how I was at that age.

You have to remember that one of the charges brought against the Jewish diaspora and early Jesus movement followers (which were both Jewish and not) was that they were atheists -- people who didn't believe in the local gods. It was not that they didn't believe in any gods, but that they didn't like the gods of the land they lived in. Most Mormons and many other highly religious people attempt

I had a conversation with my extremely conservative BIL about tay gay, and the evils the bring to the world, including destroying marriage. I had to agree: He's been married three times, my sister twice, and me twice. My other sister has been with her partner for almost 27 years. Can you imagine how many more times we all would have had to get married and divorced had she been allowed to l

Start making copious notes and look for logical fallacies. Bring your scriptures and iPhone and look up all the contradictory information. When the lesson is on tithing, and find the teaching about people who don't pay being burned. Then ask if this is for all the Chinese as well. Even though they've never heard of tithing? When they are killed, who is going to take care of their kids? Morm

The best book on this is "The Origin of Satan" by Elaine Pagals, an historian at Princeton. http://www.amazon.com/The-Origin-Satan-Christians-Demonized/dp/0679731180 Here is one review I found online: "An NBCC and National Book Awardwinning scholar of Gnosticism and early Christianity argues that the concept of Satan was central to the way apocalyptic Jews and the Christia

Thank you. I've buried an infant son. I held him in my arms as he took his final breaths. He was born with inoperable birth defects. His his brain wasn't fully developed. Somewhere around five months, the doctors had picked up something on the ultrasound, which they didn't like, and as the pregnancy progressed, the news got worse and worse. Sometime before his birth, the medical team calle

How are you set for divorce? I can't see any good coming out of this. Talk to an attorney to know your rights, even if you don't feel the immediate need. This is just simply crazy. I'm really sorry you are going through this.

The more serious point I wanted to make is that TSCC wants to both have their cake and eat it too. They want a loving god and a hell. Just tell us what is doctrine. JS channeled Jeezus and said all non-tithe payers are going to be burned at the 2nd coming. True or False? Does this include all those who never heard the gospel, or is this just us ex-Mormons and "less-active" as

As many, many naive people in the movie industry have discovered, one simply never signs a contract for a percentage of net profits. Looking at the article, it looks like the infomercial will be released in "select locations." So, they'll rent out a movie theater here and there for a couple of nights. Yawn. Skip all that and donate a dollar to the Red Cross. That's ten dimes

"What exactly do you mean by ‘people like me’, would you care to explain, do you know me?" No, but I know many people like you. Interested Observer says: "I have a black friend." Yeah, I'm sure you do. That's one of the first thing which people like you say. “ 'Police can't refer to the ethnicity of non whites?' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_ethnicity_in_the_United_Kingdom." Oh, they are required to use a designed code, when talking among themselves about the ethnicity of everyo

So, all of the non-tithe payers are going to be burned into crispy treats when Golden Boy returns. There are somewhere between 3 to 5 million active members, of which maybe 50% pay a full tithe. I have no idea on that, but let's just use those numbers. This leaves about 1.5 to 2.5 million members who are going to have to babysit the 700 million babies, toddlers and children ages 0 to 7 who
