Christmas with the family coming to our house is a pain in the a$$. I am 71 and my wife is nearly 70 and we do the whole thing. What do we have when everyone leaves is a mess that we clean up. I think it's time for the younger generation to step up and have us come to their houses. I guess I'm being the mean old grumpa. I just thought of something I did back in the day. I was going to school i

I have always been conservative but, as I age, I find myself being more tolerant of those with whom I politically disagree.

Well I went to church, not Mormon. My wife and I received a blessing to celebrate our forty-eight years of married life. It was good.

Before I went on active duty and headed for Vietnam, my bishop set me up to be ordained an Elder. He said going in the service was like going on a mission. I know our rules were a whole lot different. He thought that I might be called upon at some time to need the Mel. PH. I really think he was trying to lay the guilt thing about honoring the PH to keep me out of trouble. Sorry, if that was the i

When I was young, I was born just following WWII, I remember folks in the US wearing those poppies. I would be surprised to see one today. It is on days such as this, Veteran's Day in the US, I reflect upon those that I remember who did not come home. I am a US veteran and Vietnam was my war. I knew young men who died and to me they will always remain in their late teens or early twenties. It is

I too think the current political situation has probably taken its toll. As for myself, I have resolved many of my personal issues with the church and only pop in once in awhile to see what is being discussed and then comment only if I think I can add anything useful to the discussion. As for attending the ExMo Conference, my wife and I did not attend this year due to an illness in the family tha

Looking back thru church history the prophets have said various things about when the spirit enters the body of the baby. Some have said at birth while others have said at conception. I think this is one of the reasons there has not been a consistent stand concerning the question of abortion. Not knowing precisely when human life begins makes the act of abortion being murder rather subjective. Yo

Fifty years ago I was that young man and I too converted. There is a difference however since my Mormon girl waited for me while I went in the service. When I returned from Vietnam we were married and started our happy Mormon life with eventually four children. Another difference is that we both kept our family together and we both left the church at the same time as have our children. So sometim

We Navy guys can tell a few things about those darned Marines such as: A Marine and a sailor were in the restroom of an airport doing their business when the sailor finishes and starts for the door, the Marine shouts out, "Hey sailor, in the Corps at boot camp they teach us to wash our hands after taking a piss." The sailor then turns and replies, "At Navy boot camp they teach n

I love Santa Fe. It's on the lib side, but friendly even to conservatives like me. It is one of the few places that my wife and I have visited more than once and just do not get enough of it. I can see that it would be a really nice place to live.

I had facial hair for several years in the recent past. I shaved it off a couple of months ago. Apparently muscle memory of shaving motions decline rapidly in older men so in the interest of saving my face from injury I started to regrow my facial hair yesterday.

Isn't it interesting that all these Oklahoma quakes started after the start of fracking for gas and oil? Oh, that's right the oil and gas folks say there is no proof that fracking is causing this to happen. My skepticism sometimes rules my thoughts.

There is no creative genius in movies or TV. Everything you see is a rehash of something that was done previously. Why is that?

I went to my Anglo-Catholic parish. The bishop visited and we had confirmation with incense and all the trimmings. Afterwards we had a potluck dinner. It was a good time. After I got home I got several pipes and went out on the patio to smoke and listen to some music.

After reading about JS and his dealings with the occult the Mormon views of this type of thing seems hypocritical.

Back in the day, we'd invite them to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at my nevermo family. There would be thirty or so non-mos there to join for the food orgy. My dad had a no proselyting rule and the missionaries always seemed to enjoy being in that den of unbelievers.

I think I remember when we would do ward projects to help fund the budget. I also remember being able to designate where my donation was to go; ie. fast offering, missionary work, tithing, etc.

I have not asked anyone out on a date other than my wife in fifty-one years. The whole idea is a scary one for me and I doubt if I would know how to act in today's dating world. If my wife were to die I would not have a clue where to start except for some of the widows I know and even then I would be at a loss on what is expected of a guy today.

This thread is very interesting and the main point I took from this was from Bro. Packham's statement about finding snippets of wisdom from many sources. I once did an entire sacrament talk based upon wisdom and words from Herman Wouk's book "The Winds of War." Not once did I reference any scripture during the talk and no one called me out so I guess the message was acceptable about how

For a man who was supposed to be an ignorant, backwoods boy JS was really quite intelligent. It took smarts to do what he did and convince others that his teachings came from God's mouth to his ears. You may dislike him for having fooled so many, but you have to give credit for having big cajones. He had me fooled for thirty years. Oh, I want to think you all for this very interesting thread. I h
