When I was young I had a friend--I've long since moved away--who went through such pharmaceutical treatment as a child. It had stopped her growth at six feet. She never expressed regret about the treatment, but it had damaged her pituitary gland and she had to daily medication to compensate. Two or three times a year she'd have a physical episode--heart palpitations, sweating, problems with

Hey, Thinking Polly, I have no problem with US culture and its amalgamation of wonderful peoples and cultures. I was merely posing the question for people who find our traditions and values lacking. What sort of cultural norms do they want? I hope they'll answer specifically, but some people would rather keep their views implicit lest they be exposed to the light of day.

I'm a fan, too. They keep traffic moving smoothly, eliminate the constant stops, and save energy.

I think you need to read a bit more about the word "fascist" actually means.

Your two sentences are mutually exclusive. If the LDS church is descending into "pop culture" and insubstantial "nothingness," it is not becoming "fascist."

His attitude towards religion should indicate that it is not the Soviet Empire he is trying to restore but rather the Czarist Empire, supported as it was by Orthodoxy.

You are discriminating. You are discriminating against cis women. That you want to protect people who have historically been the victims of prejudice does not mean your proposed remedy is neutral or fair.

Recall that I said I don't know what the answer should be. It is easier for me to point out the flaws in your analysis than to offer some purportedly correct "answer." My uncertainty is why I came to this discussion so late. ------------------------------------------------------- > I've never heard of a case of people "faking" it, > but I suppose it could happen

That proves my point that your principle of "what the brain says" does not work. It is not "end of story." What about someone who is genetically male but for a few years thinks he might be a woman? Or who is on the edge but leaning towards being a woman and sincerely feels s/he should compete as a woman? Is that enough? What do you do with a genetic male who chooses to

You are mixing two different things. Yes, gender is about all sorts of things and non-cis people should be treated as equal in all governmental, legal, and social ways. The problem is that if you and I agree--as we do--that gender is not binary but rather on a spectrum and apply that principle to sports, there is no spot on the continuum that is more logically fair than any other. In your wor

I have said this before and I'll say it again. I love you, anybody. You are warm and insightful and brilliant and empathetic. I disagree with you on this one point; I don't want to see Title IX reversed, which is where I see the logic going. Little straight girls can be victims, too, and eroding the barriers that give them a space to develop and grow and becoming heroic is/would be a mis

As I said, the problem is complex and I don't know what the answer is. I also understand your point here and in the Williams case: in short, it's not the ability to test as much as the discriminatory application of the tests that matters. But as some judge once said, "hard cases make bad law," meaning that doing what is right in an exceptional case should not be allowed to ruin t

I rarely disagree with you, anybody, but on this one I do. Hormone treatment can neutralize much of the muscular advantage of being male, but the skeletal structure remains the same and leverage makes a difference in most sports and particularly in swimming. I don't think the relevant issue is whether a country or team is intentionally creating a physical advantage relative to other countries

I'm going to offer another term that El Gato may find acceptable. Putin is not engaged in genocide or perpetrating a Holocaust, but he is waging a war of terror. State terrorism is the use of violence to frighten the target into doing what one wants. It is more than "normal" warfare, which is aimed at gaining control of key targets. Rather, it is the indiscriminate use of violence

The process is also reversible. There was a time when Germany was one of the least anti-Semitic countries in the Western world. That changed as nationalism spread across Europe in the late 19th century and eventuated in Nazism and the Holocaust. We have witnessed the same thing in the United States. The racially-motivated violence of the last several years would have been unthinkable for

Nonsense. If Zelensky believed he was seeing genocide, he would not be offering to neutralize his country and leave it at Russia's mercy. And with regard to "genocide," you've missed the point. Putin is not engaging in "acts are committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group." He's attempting to conquer a countr

I would say that Zelensky's job is to be hyperbolic, as was Churchill's during World War Two. Those men had to unite their nations to fight much more powerful foes; they also had to rally the support of other countries to their defense. It is their rhetoric that renders such figures powerful leaders. But being truly heroic requires the ability to be both stentorious and calculating at the sa
