How Long Did You Lurk on RFM Before Posting?

Ex-CultMember July 2013

I'm often surprised by the number of posters who begin their post with, "long time lurker, first time poster..."

When I first came across RFM, I couldn't hold back and I made my first comment with the first few times visiting this board. I wanted to comment on nearly every post I read!

How could some of you hold back for so long?! Were you scared?

What was your experience like when you first started visiting here? Were you still a believer? Did this board sway you in any way? What was the first post you made about? How long did you lurk before posting your first time and why?

I think it was about a year for me too.

6 months. I was just obsessed with reading the thoughts of folks who grew up like me! I don't consider myself in any stage of "recovery," but I am super impressed and amazed at the apostacy movement going on. It is facscinating to watch. Posters here are so brave and insightful. Its a great community to be a part of.

I'm new but it was less then a week once I found out about the board. A video showed up on U Tube which lead me to the forum list. I didn't have a clue this existed until the first part of June.

I think it was a few months before I ever posted anything on here. Mostly because I am a nevermo in an exmo community. Now I post from time to time but I still do a lot of lurking because I find what is said interesting and educational because I live in an area that doesn't have a lot of mormons in it.

About six months for me. I was worried people I worked with (in Utah County) would figure me out and that I would lose my job because of being an exmo. I did lose my job for being an exmo, but it didn't have anything to do with rfm.

A few days...until I recognized someone I knew from my childhood and then felt safe posting.

I actually specifically searched RFM out to post a rant that I had about the church. It was about the Mormon Battalion, and the story about how they gave the money they were supposed to use for uniforms and provisions to the church, and how it suddenly clicked with me that they were defrauding the government. I wanted to tell someone who would appreciate it, but I couldn't tell anyone still in the church.

About a year, give or take. Best year of my life.

Couple of weeks I think. I couldn't believe my luck - for the first time in my life I could finally share all the peculiarly annoying mormon things that I hadn't been able to mention to anyone else.

About a month. I had been listening to some mormon stories podcasts and somehow found out about RFM, and then while lurking I discovered Tom Phillips story and was blown away by it and just had to comment!

Lurked about 2 weeks until I couldn't take it anymore and I had to "let it all out". I've been "inactive" for 10 years, but never really had anyone to talk things out with. LOVE this site for that reason. I feel like I was out, but a part of me was still tied to the Church because I couldn't ever talk about why and how with anyone. Someone who has never been in the church just doesn't understand, and those who ARE in the church only care about turning it into some "missionary moment" to reactivate... This board is everything I didn't know I needed!

Don't remember
I think it was about a week, and I didn't lurk the bb, I just read all the articles and visited all the links catching up with this whole new world, then I just dived in.

About four months. It was about eight or nine years ago and I've been reading this board almost daily ever since. So, when it seems like I'm not around, I'm still around!

I have learned so much from this board, had belly laughs often, and have come to respect and admire so many here. This means you!
