Reprehensible 5th Sunday Lesson yesterday

by GoingGoingNotGoneYet Jan 2012

Wow. Our relatively new and inexperienced bishop hit a new low with is "5th Sunday" (do all wards do this) talk.
The High Priests, Elders, Relief Society, and the Primary Children met together in the chapel.

Bishop D_____ started out by telling us that he had an important message for us from the Lord. He showed BKP's picture and talked about how we (Homo Sapiens? Mormons? People who live in Washington state?) are all targets.

His PowerPoint included the classic "Bummer of a Birthmark, Hal" cartoon ( http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d6_EuuZAXqk/TbOE3DI5JLI/AAAAAAAAAXM/GrHV3YvBQD... ) to prove his point.

I'm still stunned by what he showed next. He took some taped footage of some children playing in a family room. Then, without warning, a missile hit the room and vaporized the children! This was all achieved via the magic of video editing, but I found it to be in appallingly bad taste. There were, mind you, young children present. Children who have been taught to respect what the bishop has to say. This violent demonstration took place in the supposedly sacred chapel, no less.

He blathered on about how we needed watchmen on the towers to warn us of impending disasters. We broke up in to groups and came up with the usual list of authority figures that could serve as watchmen.

Shocking, disgusting, and a total waste of time.

I dont get it. What was the point of the lesson. Why show a missle hitting children playing? What does it have to do with anything?

What was the point of the lesson.

Fearmongering, and to show them that they are never safe, anywhere.

There was a second video, which started off the same (children playing), followed by a warning (another kid running it) to cause them to scatter.

Bishop D needs to be released. That is inappropriate conduct. And, obviously, he didn't get the memo from SLC: No visuals are to be used during sacrament meetings.

I had to go give the elementary school a hard time when my son was in 2nd grade. They showed a video to deter drug use.
Had some hideous fire breathing dragon that chased those who used drugs.

One of the drugs shown was beer. His dad drinks beer. And it's legal. From that point on I required a notice of any type of social energineering. We stayed home those days and played video games.
Don't need PETA on the left or Sex ED on the right telling my child what to think.
No wonder I never believed in mormonisn or any other relgion. Don;t need others doing my thinking.

In my opinion it's lazy parents who allow an institution whether it be religion or govt to teach there children what to think.

Was he trying to say the second coming is about to happen because he thinks Mitt will be POTUS?

Is he one of the "watchman on the towers" since his message was straight "from the Lord" to him?

Sounds like he's a loony that needs to be locked up.

Every fearmonger has to start somewhere, you know.
There are plenty of them to learn from, these days.

Did he also talk about the sanctity of bodily fluids, only drinking rainwater and the communist evils of fluoridation?

*stumblings hand goes in class*
"Bishop, why wouldn't God tell his Prophets in advance so that the innocent children could have been saved?"

Fear works very well for that church. The women and children really have the fear put in them. It's disgusting. I would rat that bishop out to the higher ups. You have to do this anonymously though so you won't be in FEAR of being perceived as not supporting your leaders.

If you have children, and if your spouse agrees, you could use fearmongering back on the bishop. I mean, I don't advocate manipulation, but a jerk like that needs to get a taste...

In a couple of weeks, tell him one or more of your children have been waking up every night screaming. They've been despondent in school, frozen and unable to do anything but fear. It all started with that video he showed.

Make him fear he went over the line and it could come back to really haunt him in some horrible manner. If he asks to help ease their fear, let him know that you have been advised not to let your children near him. By whom? It's not really a good idea to discuss anymore. "I've probably said too much already, Bishop. Have a good night."

I wonder how well he'll sleep for the week after that.

Dave the Atheist
He'll sleep just fine.
Mormon bishops have no shame.

I live in wa. state.
Sounds like something my last bish. would do.
He was a former school principal.
Loved to play the role.

How horrible!! Would it be possible to disclose if this took place in Eastern or Western Washington?

Yes Maam! This was in Western Washington.

Stray Mutt
Ah, the grand tradition of the LDS persecution complex.

Do you know if he's a retired school principal?

drilldoc
So Mormons
are JW's now?

Carol Y.
Thanks! I've lived on both sides, and the worst bishop I ever experienced was on there. This was decades ago, in the Seattle 14th ward.
