My name was Alma or Aaron....a childhood friend and I left the church around the same time but separate from eachother. When we found out about the other we would send the occasional text "How you doing Aaron"? Not bad what about you "Alma"....see thats where im confused I think I might have gotten my name mixed up with his. I never liked the name Alma, in spanish its a girls

I served a mission 2002-2004 a country considered afluent by latin american standards. Most of the areas I served in were poor and I can recall the exact time that I first realized that the church was "american" and out of touch. At the end of the conference some mormon shlep gets up and gives the benediction envoking protection to those leaving the conference and driving home. Owning a

How about general conference and all of the members dressed perfect. The invocation and benediction always refering to utah marmotts driving home safely. I recall a time late in my mission when I was incredibly embarrassed and uneased by the seemingly out of touch 1 percent "guiding" the church

Being an adult...being a big girl, being a fierce and strong woman is exactly the same thing, Its being authentic in who you are, its being unapologetic about your convictions while maintaining respect for others opinions and experiences. If your family loves you they will handle it. In fact if you feel like sending off the letter maybe you could personally tell them once you have. The process t

The resignation process is deemed by the church as "a local ecclesiastical matter" So you send your letter to the COB and they then forward it to your stake president and he or the bishop contact you to try and bring you in and guilt trip you regarding "the eternal consequences of your actions". If you are concerned about your family finding out about your resignation you prob

I went through a period of sporadic activity prior to leaving the church. When I moved to hawaii and the church lost track of me people from salt lake or some department in the COB began contacting relatives, some of which were quite distant, trying to locate me. It was invasive and contributed to my decision to have my records removed. I dont think the mormon policy is to inform family members o

Being a voracious reader prior to the mission, I had a very hard time adapting to basically two books, the BOM and the Bible. After a few months and having read the book of mormon 2 or 3 times I couldnt bring myself to reread it and almost exclusively read from the bible from that point on. This happen to anyone else? Why do you think that is

Well put. Anything really is possible. The most liberating thing for me when I left the church and consequently ceased my belief in GOd was being unburdened from feeling like I had to apply BS answers to lifes problems.....Answers that never jived

It is pretty incredible to me how so many can maintain faith in basically any religion when looking at the facts surounding their belief system. There is a reason I believe that "the intellectuals" turn towards more of a science based atheistic approach. I have always been curious and a reader, but am not an educated man. I know many believers who are highly educated but who dont seem t

Leaving mormonism was difficult. When I focused the same microscope that I had focused onto Religion as a whole I realized that the idea of a God as taught in all religions didnt jive for me. How many of you went atheist/agnostic or found faith in an alternate religion.

Thats awesome Molly! I think that a lot of LDS women drown their sorrows in compulsive eating. My sister left the morg around the time I did and is now thiner and healthier than when she was in high school. People deal with stress and unhappiness in different ways, the morg basically teaches that a womans body is a baby factory....thats it

I have biracial nieces and nephews who are all under 14. They like most LDS children know very little of the actual history of the mormon church. I wonder what their reaction will be if they ever read ol man brighams take on interracial marriage and the conception of children therein. Stone em, kill those abominable beautiful half black half white blue eyed devils!

Before I got out of the church it seemed that the morg had taken more of a dont ask dont tell approach to masturbation. In fact I really do believe that a good share of my bishops dreaded having to ask the question in youth interviews and it seemed to be asked less as I got older. The church has had a long standing practice of suppressing both male and female sexuality.

It takes balls to claim membership to the morg, then go against the infallible leadership opening yourself up to what I can only assume is crappy treatment, mean looks and ostracizing from your leadership and fellow members. Jumping into a burning building, firing a gun at some poor extremist bastard in his bombed out miserable country, and patrolling the streets are not the only ways to show

I didn't mean to imply that he was exed although it seems likely to happen as he in my opinion has shown little respect or discretion in keeping the hearings to himself. Can they do anything but ex him at this point.

I feel bad for a man who has likely spent the majority of his life surpressing his homosexual leanings and converting that inner confusion and fear into deep seeded hate. He of all the apostles has been the most talkative on the "issue" of doing enjoyable stuff that might be gay "masturbation" leading to gay stuff that might turn you gay. He worries an aweful lot about teenag

I respect john and I think his intentions are to improve tolerance within the Morg and I think his inevitable excommunication will aid in gaining momentum for change. I do however think that when you entertain and support ideas which are contrary to that of the "Devine leadership" well at that point your kind of a troll. John is an extremely brave individual and I like that he is troll

I like John Dehlin he seems like a really thoughtful complex dude. If I had clout within the morg I would feel very uneasy with the guy as well as his motives and the vagueness of said motives. In some ways he seems like a TROLL. I doubt that he intends for his actions to be "trollish" but man are they ever. He seems to have a deep love for the mormon culture and story, but he be troll

I like Tal's take on the Dehlin Situation. However, I find it extremely aggravating when people who do not fit within the theological mold of a very closed, defined system of belief (mormonism, JW's, 7th day, etc) try to affect change within the organization to "improve it" or make it more inclusive. Mormonism was born of racist, sexist and elitist ideas. The very core of mormonism woul

If I were a father and one of my kids came to me and said "dad I'm gay", I'd reply oh ok. If another child came to me and said "dad, these guys have been teaching me about Mormonism and I'm going to get baptized". I'd say no gaddamn son of mine is going to be Mormon, why couldn't you just be gay like your brother :) j/k. Glad your posting

I really dont think that I am so special in the grand scheme of the universe that my consciousness needs to continue on in the same form that It now exists. Although I suppose that it is possible that consciousness transcends death and that our personality both the good and bad will be preserved in some similar form, I really hope not. As far as wishfull thinking goes, id much rather assume that
