I really see this board as that old comfy couch in the back of the house where everybody hangs out. We can sit and talk politics, scratch where it itches, and bitch about things here. We'll engage in conversations and topics here that we'd never discuss in polite company or even above hushed tones when out in public. What Petersen overlooks is that with almost no exception, we are a group

I had two moments that stood out for me. Thankfully, my mom married a non-Mormon who remained a nomo all his life. He was a gentle and kind man, however. A truly great father. I remember one night in MIA they showed a film intended to scare all us kids into only dating members. I don't remember much of it, but realized it tried to depict a non-member on a date with a girl and he was jus

I gotta say that after attending my fair share of pot lucks, there are some Baptist churches in the south that can provide such amazing ribs to cause even the staunchest atheist to realize there must be a God.

One of my favorite quotes by an exmo is from Lyndon Lamborn who was excommunicated in 2007 because of questions he asked and answers he shared. “There comes a time in the life of many church members when the desire to know the truth about the church becomes stronger than the desire to believe the church is true.” Here's the article with more info about Lyndon: http://www.eastvalleyt

When I was neck-deep in the confusion of leaving the church about 30 years ago someone gave me Sandra Tanner's phone number and suggested I call her. I had never heard of her before, but was just told she was an ex-Mormon who may have some insight for me. I called her one morning and proceeded to do a brain dump of all the confusion, pain, and betrayal I was feeling. She listened, encourag

Our family has been pleased with the several Calvary Chapels we've attended. Most of them just teach directly through the Bible verse by verse each week. And many are so big that you can easily remain anonymous to start and join smaller groups later if you want to build relationships. You can see if you have one in your community here: http://ccofministry.org/index.php?option=com_content&vi

I recently overheard a woman from church retelling the elevator shaft miracle to my mom, so I decided to find a good Mormon resource for debunking it. An article in BYU Studies should qualify, don't you think? https://byustudies.byu.edu/PDFLibrary/36.2RichardsSalt-b6542a86-5eea-4e3e-879a-4ec818314f07.pdf Here's a great quote from the article: "Jennifer Lund at the Museum of Church

Isn't that cool? When the Tall Man family moved to a new town several years ago, we visited a number of local churches to find the one that fit best. We were welcomed at all of them. One pastor offered to help us find the one that suit us best if his didn't, since he knows most of the other local pastors and their churches. Kinda funny how all these apostates are just contending against one a

Post a note in your local freebie newspaper: "To the secret admirer who left flowers on my porch on Wisteria Lane: Next time please leave money. I detest flowers from strangers. "

Tough issues. If you live in Mormon country, you may want to call some local churches. Many have groups of exmos that will likely have folks who have been in your exact spot. And most of them will not question or require any new religious commitment from you. They will just be better able to relate to where you are and support you to get to where you're going -- wherever that may be. I know

Yes, there's plenty of room for humility in the approach to this subject by all parties concerned. Some of the greatest minds of all time have been theists, and the atheists have their fair share as well. Even with the current crop of physicists redefining "nothing," there is still no answer from any atheist as to "why is there something rather than nothing?" We liv

Anagrammy, I'm so glad you vented. The conduct of your children is unbelievable. The whole lot of them seems to have never grasped the concept of gratitude, and are completely blind to how much of it they owe you. I'm confident that you'll be fine. You'll meet wonderful interesting people in your travels, and I envy you in the freedom to get away like that. I do not envy your kids mi
